No idea why I’m sharing this but I love Peters channel and one of the jewelry pieces he showed reminded me of this. About 2 1/2 years ago, before Covid, I was in Van Cleef and Arpels in NYC. There was a certain, somewhat famous basketball player (NBA, NY team) there shopping. Naturally all staff was in suck ass mode. Along him was a regular, just everyday looking guy, dressed in a jogging type getup, cruddy sneakers, nothing particular. So this everyday guy, whom to this day I don’t know who he ever was, was trying to get help to look at a VC&A diamond and sapphire broach necklace, huge stones, big $$$. Along that were matching hanging earrings in the case and bracelet. You could see the staff basically ignoring him tho, with attention going to the basketball player who was watch shopping, but not committing to anything. I remember clearly when that man said the Patek watch he was shown was too expensive at $750,000. Anyway it was interesting to watch bevause I could tell the guy in the jogging suit was getting dissed and getting mad. Finally the clerk tells him, that the cost combined for the diamond and sapphire set was $3.5 million dollars. Again tho, attention going back to the b ball player who now says “yea that’s just a little more than I’d like to spend”. The other guy, the plain Jane dude looks at the attendant, says “ok, wrap it up” and pulls out one of the Amex black cards, throws the card down and says “also do you have any royal oak in rose gold, if so, I need one gift wrapped please”. This plain Jane everyday looking, not famous guy bought nearly $5 million dollars and just had them put on his Amex. Taught me the valuable lesson, be very careful on judging the looks of a person. The VC&A staff no doubt thought he was just some riff rift raft there to browse, and they showed him their disdain every minute he was there and asking about the jewelry. Here we walked out with millions in jewelry and the famous bball player left buying nothing because it was too expensive. Taught me not to judge that book by the cover. And no, I was the browser on this day, because no I couldn’t afford any of the jewelry mentioned but boy was it was fun to watch.
