On the question of why Louise would choose to have the baby even though she knows Hannah will eventually get a disease and die: It's because she's choosing to experience all the joy and love that she will have with the child for 12 or so years before she dies, rather than just giving up all of the good times and having her daughter NEVER exist just to spare herself the grief. She's accepting the emotional pain at the end in exchange for all the good that comes before it. Think of it this way: Imagine, Wadumin, if you had a psychic vision today and found out that Anita will get hit by a bus and die 5 years from now. Would you break up with her today in order to save yourself the pain of eventually losing her? Or would you spend every day appreciating the time you have together, even more than you would have otherwise, knowing that your time together will be limited? Now, take that to another level: Imagine you had that same psychic vision about Anita's eventual death back before you started dating. Knowing she will eventually die, would you choose to never start dating her and give up all the good times and love that you've had since then just to avoid the pain of losing her years from now? She'd still die from the bus accident eventually but you would be giving up the love that you have, the memories that you've made together, and robbing her of her own love and memories before she dies. Tbh, it would be a selfish choice to give up all the good beforehand just to avoid the pain at the end (imo). The truth of the matter is that we all have tragic endings. Everyone dies. Some people will die from disease, some from accidents, some from violence, and some from natural causes and old age. And we never know when or how it's going to happen. Either way, knowing or not knowing when/how each person will die doesn't change the fact that everyone you know will die eventually. Both of you will eventually die and, most likely, one of you will die before the other. Knowing this, should you break up right now so the surviving partner can avoid the pain of the eventual loss? The message of Louise's choice in the movie is that spending and cherishing the time we have with another person is more important than saving ourselves grief by staying separate from them just because we know they will eventually be gone. The bigger message of the movie is that life is made up of both joy and pain. Would you give up all the joy just to avoid the pain? Or is it better to accept the pain so that you can also experience the joy? And, if you give up both, are you even really living? Or are you just existing? Also, as sad as it will be for Louise to lose Hannah at a young age, imagine how much sadder it would be for her if Hannah never existed at all. Especially if she still "remembered" that Hannah could have existed but chose not to have her. The only argument against this is maybe that Louise would be saving Hannah the pain of the disease and dying early. But she'd also be robbing her of her entire existence before then, so... y'know... that's a big, difficult-to-answer question. That would be more like if you had a psychic vision and knew that YOU were going to be hit by a bus and die next week. Then an alien with a time-machine shows up and gives you the choice to either (a) finish out your life and die early as predicted, OR (b) to never have been born. Which would you choose?

My favorite part was when the wife told her husband "I forgot how good it felt to be held by you" even though it was their first hug together but she missed it since in the future they didn't end up together.

The bird was used in mining to make sure there is enough oxygen and no harmful gasses, the bird would die first and alert them.

The movie is about Hannah's arrival. The aliens was just a part of it. One of the best movies of the last 25 years hands down.

One of the best films from this millenia. The whole alien encounter is just a back story. Just ultimate shout out for life - with all it's joys and sorrows.

Given that it wasnt pointed out yet in the comments: The generals wife last words were "in war there are no winners, only widows" and her phone call to the general roughly translates into "General your wife contacted me in my dreams, in war there are no winners only widows, General you need to listen to me, stop the attack"

I've seen several reactions where they didn't get the twist about Louise seeing the future and all the flashbacks being flash-forwards, even by the end of the film. But you got it! Very satisfying to watch!

for Louise having Hannah makes a lot of sense; she gets 14/15 years of her plus she can live in any moment of it at will. its also understandable that ian would be angry that she didn't reveal her knowledge of what was to come. with that information available its fair for him to think she should have disclosed it to him.

I love this film because it keeps you on your toes the whole movie with so many plot twists🤯 and you have to pay attention to everything or else the ending won't make sense. I read some of the comments about whether she should or shouldn't have her baby, knowing the outcome of her life. It brings me back to the conversation between Neo and the Oracle. Those who know what I'm talking about. This movie is SO underrated and really gets you in the feels.😢 Thanks for sharing the experience.

The aliens also had to make a sacrifice (the death of Abbott) knowing it would occur to make history happen.

loved your guys reaction! to the plot of the film: I think you cant really change stuff, like amy told him "ive forgotten how it feld to be hugged by you" when she first hugged him. when you learn the language you just know everything that will happen and you can see your whole life. as far as i know the original material even hints at that you cant actually change anything. instead of reading a word from start to finish you instantly just see the word as a whole, same goes for your life. keep the reactions coming

The musical piece you enjoyed is On The Nature of Daylight by Max Richter. It was composed prior to the movie. It wasn’t composed for any particular movie or show, but it has been used in several.

Great reaction. Did you notice, in the beginning when Ian first meets Louise, he quotes her book when he says that language is the first "weapon" drawn in a conflict.

I don't know if the source material says anything about it (bc I never read the book), but the way I interpret the alien ships fading out at the end is that they're leaving our time. Imagine if you and I were standing in a room at 5:00pm. Then you continue on to 5:01pm in our usual minute-at-a-time way of moving through time, but I -- being able to travel in time -- decide to stay at 5:00pm (or skip 5:01pm and jump forward to 5:02pm). From your point of view, I'd appear to vanish. Really, though, I didn't "disappear," I just moved to a different space-time coordinate than the one that you moved to. It's like if I just walk out of the room you're in and into another room, you wouldn't say I disappeared; you'd say I moved elsewhere. If there's any sort of acceleration associated with the aliens' way of travelling, then their leaving our "present moment" could look like fading out and then being gone.

When Louis is already perceiving time in non-linear fashion and then she would decide to not have Hannah, it would mean to "delete" all of her memories of her and emotionally it would be like killing her. Thats why it was not a real possibility for her. However Ian didnt have that and felt like her decision to have a child while knowing her death was creating a suffering and that is why he left. It is fantastic movie on soo many levels.

I wish they mentioned that both Abbot and Costello would have known that one would die. Also, I’m always surprised when people ask about the bird. It’s a canary like the metaphor of a canary in a coal mine. Miners used to take caged canaries into the mines because they chirp (a lot). They were an early warning system for carbon monoxide, methane or other toxins in the air. If the canary goes quiet the air is not safe.

I see it as her making all the choices throughout her life simultaneously, with all the knowledge of all time in her head. She didn't technically "choose" to have her daughter, but she knew that the daughter that was inevitable would have a certain fate.

I believe the weapon grants you the ability to see trough time. Not necessarily change the future too much. Everything happened for a reason in the movie. She saves the world because she understands the language first. She also has Hannah because she is just that kind of person who would go trough that. The weapon reveals that everything in fact happens for a reason. What I think backs this theory is that why would the alien suicide to the bomb even when they see the past and the future. The alien was meant to die there for them to give the language.

As a divorced parent to young kids, the ending absolutely wrecks me every time.

See, the way you were discussing possibilities in end is the barrier of how we think and precieves time. On the other hand, they used to convey their language in circular symbols which have no end or beginning, the can see through time at any point but can't change it. They are bound to follow the path. When only Louis had the powers she could use them to learn from future but if everyone had the same power nothing could've been changed. Just like a circular path which we can see all at once and walk in any direction from any point but can't break it.

Since you liked this I think you would appreciate "Predestination". Just as mysterious and just as mind-boggling when the whole story falls into place.

Did you both learn nothing from Interstellar? Even knowing the future results in the same outcome. Knowing the past results in the same outcome or gives you the clues to do what needs to happen whether you know it or not. Louise chose to still have her daughter because having kids is an immeasurable experience. Even knowing the outcome of her daughters death and her divorce from Ian. We only live once and to know the love and experience you gain from a bearing children makes life worth it for some people. It makes the pain of loss bearable.

One of my all-time favorite films... Truly remarkable in it's conception, direction, acting, effects, script... just brilliant. Since you love this film, here's some others that are remarkable in their own way... they all feature great stories, dialogue, direction, acting, and effects and you'll never forget any of them: CHILDREN OF MEN, PLEASANTVILLE, AMELIE, STRANGER THAN FICTION... these four films are truly hidden gems worth seeing. This movie has a complex perspective on free will. My interpretation is that there is in fact free will, but that doesn’t mean that you can change your future decisions. If Louise can see the future and she sees herself having Hannah, if she then decides not to have her, then she didn’t see the future, did she? To paraphrase The Matrix, “you’ve already made the choice, now you have to understand why you made it.” The decisions in the future can’t be changed any more than you can change a decision from your past, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t have free will when you did (or will) make that choice. Granted Louise’s hypothetical “would you change anything” makes it sound like a possibility, and there’s all kinds of other paradoxes in this movie, but that’s my perspective on it!

A. Watch it again, what’s incredible is every time you watch it you catch new things, let’s just say EVERY frame has a purpose. B. Read about Determinism, as that will help you ground the story. She chooses to embrace the future (as does Costello who knew he was going to die from the bomb) even though she knows because that is her character, and ideally the hope is in this is what “the universe” wants to happen, for the human race to continue. Incredible movie and the short story which this based on, The Story of My Life by Ted Chiang, is maybe even better.

Miners used to bring small birds with them because birds would go unconscious first when the air in the mine hit a pocket of some gas's without oxygen - the "canary in the coal mine." So they bring the little bird with them because they don't trust the air in the ship.

There are so much foreshadowing of what is going on if you watch again. Near the start when Ian is reading from her book, there is a quote about language being the first weapon in war. So it ties to them using give weapon, to mean giving their language.

I love this movie. You have to rewatch this movie... is it even much more amazing for the second time and you will catch so many hidden details. Like this movie is actually Louise telling the whole story... but when you are watching the movie for the first time you do not catch this. BTW. that bird (the skylark) was used for centuries as a detector of dangerous gasses in mines. That's why they had one too. If you want to watch some other amazing alien movie, I highly recommend you to watch District 9.

I don’t think he left her because of the daughter’s illness. When he told Her she “made the wrong choice” it wasn’t that she chose to still have a baby with him, it was that she didn’t share what she knew with him. He didn’t understand the language fully at that point like she did. Just my interpretation.

I think you understand Ian's point of view about why he was upset and left her. But it wasn't just their pain he was concerned with. It was putting Hannah though that suffering. Louise saw it differently. Yes Hannah was going to suffer and so would they but does that mean that she should never be born and experience all the love her parents had for her? We all die. Suffering is a part of life. Everyone experiences it at some level. That's no reason to wish you were never born.
