28:08 Notice the bullet holes in the metal center frame of the train door. Vincent shot a tight, center of mass grouping, which was stopped by the metal door frame. Max shot a less tight group, which went through the glass. Vince lost the gunfight, ironically, because he was such a good shot.

_"Listen to the sound of that gun, bro, that sounds so realistic!"_ It's because it is real. Michael Mann used former SAS soldiers to train actors, and always used real gun sounds because you just can't fake it in post. Real always sounds better.
@favanniva

The gun sounds are acutally real. Mann is always trying to be as realistic as possible. This was the first movie where they used digital cameras. Tom Cruise has so many interesting movies that are underrated, this is a gem. Please also watch The Last of the Mohicans from this director. That is a good one too. And Valkyrie with Tom Cruise... I love that in the beginning Max says he gets lucky with the lights. In the end they go out on the train and that is where Vincent's training fails him. He does not see Max move, you see the two chest one head shot rounds in the door. The bullet holes. He does not have a spare magazine for the pistol he stole off the guard.

@justtrustash you NEED to see “HEAT” the realistic gun sounds come from Heat and the star studded cast, the first movie to use military advisors for the gun scenes. Robert DeNero plays a silver haired bad ass bank robber with special forces military background. One of the greatest movies of all time that changed action movies from Arnold swarzenager to realistic. “Place beyond the pines” is EPIC as well.

Usually in movies and tv they load the prop guns with hearing safe blanks and then add the gunshot noise in post production. Michael Mann, in this movie and Heat was using "Full power" blanks and recording the audio on set. So the sound, as it echoes inbetween buildings is way more impactful and realistic.

One thing I think is over looked about this film is the clarity of the scenery at night. It was the 1st film to be shot with a Viper Film Stream High-Definition Camera. You can see the actors clearly at night as well as the details of the scenery miles in the background.

I love this movie. Such an interesting perspective of watching Tom Cruise beeing the villain, and man what a performance. Ruthless, calculated yet still he pushes the right buttons on Max so that he goes and does something about his plans plus he takes the leap of faith and calls Annie. Great film, and oh great soundtrack as well specially the one by Audioslave - Chris Cornell is such an amazing singer god rest his soul. Edit: Since you like realistic gun sounds you should check out Heat. Its one of the most realistic sounding film ever made plus it has one of the best shootout in a film ever. Highly recommend. I saw this in the movie theater my freshman year in high school. My parents had recently separated but I really wanted to see this and they both came with me to see it even though they would soon be divorced so I have a soft spot for it. People say Jamie Foxx is a limited actor but I give him credit for actually knowing when to be subdued when you’re acting with someone else who has more scenery chewing to do. And this is probably one of Tom Cruise’s top 5 performances.

Funny, I saw this around the same age (well I was a junior I think but close) and it was also an expierience that involved family in a time where things were changing, and seeing this movie at that time ended up becoming a great memory. This is the movie that made me a fan of Michael Mann and Jamie Foxx, and the first time I really loved Tom Cruise in a role. I'd say this and Tropic Thunder are the two for me where he's really going for something different and it works so well. He's good in other stuff too of course but this showed me how good he can really be.

The reason Tom Cruise did such a good job is because the director, Michael Mann, did an insanely good job directing. Vincent has an entire backstory written for him that's never mentioned in film, including where he grew up, what his family was like, and what he did before he became a hitman. The purpose was to create a character that feels like a real person who exists prior to the start of the movie. Tom Cruise spoke VERY highly of this, because it gave him an incredible amount to draw from as an actor, and therefore do a better job embodying the character. It's really cool listening to Tom Cruise talk about it, because he's so enthusiastic about having the opportunity to get so in-depth with a performance.

To prepare for this role - to get the feel of being anonymous - Tom Cruise dressed in a courier's uniform, a cap and dark glasses. Then he walked around LA for a day (no bodyguards, no entourage of any kind), walking into cafes amd shops and engaging random people in conversation. Nobody recognized him. He then tried to challenge himself further by speaking to people and discussing his movies (in the third person). STILL no-one twigged.

I read (or saw a video) that had a really interesting interpretation of the film and how it is about improvisation and routine. Vincent and Max live very different lives with Vincent representing improvisation and Max representing routine. In the end this is switched. There are three things going against Vincent: the lighting change in a crucial moment, the design of the door Max is standing behind, and the fact that Max jumps out at all which is something Vince isn't expecting. These things spook him and he resorts to the firing drill he uses throughout the movie. The avatar of improvisation gets tripped up by routine. On the other hand, Max has several things going for him: he knows about Vince's firing drill, and he has the door in his corner, and the element of surprise. The avatar of routine in the movie wins, with a helping of movie luck, by improvising and being unpredictable. It's a really cool angle to the film that only enhances the movie. Great reaction.
@This_Justin001
@This_Justin001 2 жыл бұрын
That was my interpretation as well. What failed Vincent at the end was the lighting change combined with Max's movement away from center mass which is where Vincent always aims first. Because Max shot through the glass, rather than the door like Vincent did he was able to get the cleaner shot and therefore win the gun fight. Vincent continually fired Mozambique style and Max picked up on that detail that allowed him to get the upper hand. Great film & styling in those final moments. It was both sad & beautiful at the same time. A death and a rebirth. Love your take man!

I don't believe that people need someone like Vincent *IN THEIR LIFE* But I believe that people need to meet a Vincent *DURING THEIR LIFE* One has to understand the 'other side' of things to see the bigger picture overall. A quote I heard once I think sums up what I'm trying to get at, "If you are to truly understand, then you will need the contrast. Not adherence to a single idea."

Notification: "JTA Reacts to COLLATERAL" ~ "Oh yeah, this one is gonna put Ash into overdrive... Ash is gonna leave his chair with "Let's Go Man!" with profound enthusiasm so many times it may even set a new record...at least in intensity, I hope he doesn't damage his chair or surroundings LOL!". Yes, indeed, Top 5 Movie of Ashkan's Life Lessons+Artistic Reverence... no less than top 10. I saw Collateral when it came out and was HIT HARD by it... no explanation needed. Thanks Bro... I knew you would love it. [HEAT, (1995) Dir. Michael Mann, Robt. Deniro, Al Pacino, Val (Your Huckleberry) Kilmer. ] BTW the music playing in the final bar sceen shootout was also used in the car chase scene of The Bourne Identity (2002).

Michael Mann movies for Life 👌 Great reaction Definitely recommend watching ALL Director Michael Mann's movies (Jericho Mile, THIEF, The KEEP, Manhunter, Last of the Mohicans, HEAT, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Blackhat) RIP to James Caan, he was the lead in Michael Mann's 1st theatrical movie THIEF(1981) He recently passed away at the age of 82. Out of all the movies he's made, James Caan said THIEF was his most favorite to make. Great supporting cast & cameos of upcoming actors. Michael Mann is definitely a Big influence to so many in the industry. He has a book coming out HEAT 2 which is a prequel & sequel in one, totally can't wait to read it. It will eventually become a movie probably after his new biopic about Enzo Ferrari.
