I enjoy Zathura and Jumanji separately. Yes the plots are identical, but the tones of each are vastly different. Zathura was treated more like a kid adventure while Jumanji was treated like an adult's nightmare of losing their childhood.

Van Pelt the Hunter probably is the most horrific thing in this film. The fact that a Hunter with the face of his father telling him the exact same word he used to tell him about "being a man" just shows how sadistic the game is.

Belive it or not, Alan's father and the hunter Van Pelt are actually played by the same actor (Jonathan Hyde), for a purpose: When Alan was a kid, he was long scared of his strict father (Who wants him to go through the same education and work he went thorugh) and felt like his father mistreated him, which caused their relationship to go downhill. But when Alan gets trapped in Jumanji for 26 years, it gives Alan a chance of realizing and regretting what he said to his father, what mistakes he made, and him desperately trying to escape from the game so he can go and change the past. Van Pelt is supposed to be a representation of his father. When he shows up, it gives Alan a big chance at redemption and standing up to his fears and taking responsiblity of what he said to his dad. But instead, Alan runs away when Van Pelt shoots at him, which is a symbol of him running away from his problems with his father. When he sees what happened to the town and the factory, what happened to his father, and how Carl Bentley got fired because of the incident at the factory, it makes Alan have a huge change of heart further and realize it was all caused because of his irresponsibility and cowardice. In the end, when Alan is about to finish the game and he gets confronted at gunpoint by Van Pelt, instead of running away, Alan finally has enough heart and courage to stand up to his fears, go back in time, apologize to his dad about what he said (His dad also had a change of heart for how he scolded and treated his son), and hope for the best with their relationship. Not just that, but Alan also accepts full responsibility for causing the shoe incident at the factory, which saves Carl from being fired and becoming a lousy police officer. Lesson is that no matter what troubles or struggles you go through with your family, they're still your family and they'll still love you. And also, accepting responsibility will help you learn your mistakes and succeed in life without being weighed down by regret, guilt, or shame.

The part where Alan got sucked into the game was actually something which always stuck with me as a kid. I was genuinely afraid of the movie because of that scene. And i still think the whole idea behind this movie is so wonderfully unique and amazing. I am not too much of a fan of the new ones. I wouldn't call them bad, but i found it kinda disheartening that they shifted the concept of playing a boardgame into another direction because boardgames simply aren't hip enough anymore. There were so many routes they could have taken with this concept before going into another direction. Also, fun fact, there are people who actually created AMAZING replicas of this game, like, you won't believe how close they were able to get it to the original. I recommend looking it up, just out of fun. (Though, I do wish, I could have bought one of them for myself) Also ,also... LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS?! I LOVE this movie so much too! You're reacting to so many favorites of mine lately. Thank you so much for that.

14:43 if Alan was in the jungle he likely would have his turn Skipped. Remember, this was put on Alan during a two player game. It literally says he must wait. YES!!! One of my favorite Robin Williams movies! I never knew it was based on a book. I read it and it was a lot different than I thought The movie recieved mixed reviews by Critics, and Roger Ebert called it one of "the worst kids movies he had ever seen", stating the "PG rating was a joke and that the film should have gotten a PG 13 rating instead". The film made $250-260 million dollars at the box office against a $65 million dollar budget. The VFX were done by Industrial Light and Magic, and the special makeup effects were done by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. The music was composed by the late James Horner.

I’ve heard it’s very difficult working with a robot and water so that croc attack was so good. I really like/love new movies with 3D stuff but they don’t come anywhere near this type of work which makes these type of movies more special, in my opinion. 😍😍😍 The music is on point aswell. I love this movie. They definitely played up the Peter Pan aspect of the story, particularly with the villain, Van Pelt, being played by the same actor who plays Alan's father. I bet it was already said here, but just in case. The actor who plays Alans father also plays Van Pelt. As the game stated thru out the movie, the games brings forth our deepest darkest dreads. For Alan, it was the image of his father from whom he was trying to run away even before the game began. Van Pelt was even teaching him the same lessons as his father have only more ruthlessly. Thats why Alan was so afraid of him. And when Alan finally stood up to Van Pelt at the end Pelt even said "Hold it Sonny boi!" followed by "Your finally acting like a man"!

I remember being young enough to watch the cartoon series based on this movie, where the riddles were more life lessons for the day while the kids got sucked into the game to help Alan. You got to see Jumanji where literally everything was trying to kill you. Even the anteaters had sharp teeth and hunger for human flesh. Though the series ending wasn't as satisfying as this movie it was still more imaginative then the Jumanji sequels.

Your fear is part of the reaction! And honestly? Rewatching this it feels like a kiddy horror movie or at least a thriller. ITS INTENSE! That kid getting trampled in a car? All the feral animals, bugs and pLANTS after them? Heck. Man with gun and no morals-- 😱

I honestly think this is one of the most incredible happy endings I've ever seen in any movie. The whole build-up is insanely good and deeply emotional. I cried a lot throughout the ending! Definitely a top-tier movie from the 90s. I watched it as a kid and I just finished watching it again after all these years!

I'd played the hell out of this board game back when I had it for my 9th birthday and when I took it to school the other kids ran away like it was a uojia board and no one wanted to play with me so I played with my parents. On a side note its neat to see a young Kristen Dunst aka Mary Jane from Sam rami's spiderman trilogy and the hunter van pelt chasing Alan plays his father

Kirsten Dunst has always been a phenomenal actress, and if you were impressed with her here I feel like you’d love her even younger performance as Claudia the Eternal Child in ‘Interview With The Vampire’. I absolutely love that you liked this movie so much, because it was one of my childhood staples. The graphics were... yeah. A product of their time, to put it nicely, but as a kid I never really noticed that much. LOL

I'm so glad you enjoyed the film. The cgi was... in its infancy, but the animatronics are all stellar, my favorite probably being the killer orchid. The mosquitos probably bothered me the most as a kid too (thank goodness there were no leeches in the film). I love the detail that Jonathan Hyde (who was also in Anaconda, Titanic, Ritchie Rich, and The Mummy, lol every 90s film) not only plays Van Pelt but Allan's father. It makes me wonder if Van Pelt looks different depending on the player.

There is one negative side to that movie behind the scenes. After a disagreement occurred with Aladdin back in 1992, It was reported that Robin Williams’ old feud with Disney ignited again when Bicentennial Man bombed at the box office. He blamed the execs for poor marketing on it. That bitterness lasted up until 2009, he forgave them, and was in turn named a Disney Legend.

Watching you get so scared at certain points in this film made me laugh. The wasps and spiders still creep me out but can you imagine as a kid? This was a terrifying. But I'm so glad you appreciated the character growth and emotional depth this film has. It was far more common in this era of films (80s/90s) where films, even kids films, were far more wholesome. I miss it so much!

This is one of my favorite movies and I'm really glad you enjoyed it. The emotional weight it carries, and the character development they all go through is astounding. One interesting note is that the original books for both Zathura and Jumanji were written by the same person. One thing I love about all of your reactions though is how you recognize and pay attention to the soundtracks. Music in movies is so important, and James Horner's score for this is beautiful. I recommend another movie that he scored, Spiderwick Chronicles. I feel like you'd enjoy it, and it's one of my favorites growing up. The world that it (and the original books) builds is wonderful and has inspired me in my own writing.

I know this is late, but the reason only certain people can hear the drums is explained by the game itself "A Game for those who seek to find a way to leave their world behind." Therefore, people who are basically done with life are able to hear the game (Alan with the bullies, Sarah with Billy picking on Alan, Judy and Peter with the death of their parents, and so on)

For the record: if it had been an earthquake, going inside would be a bad idea. The chimney or other external pieces of the house could fall on them. It’s best to remain inside, in a doorway, until it’s over. Aftershocks are also a concern, so it may not be safe to leave right away.

I watched this movie hundreds of times as a kid. I can feel the music from it in my soul and I can quote just about every line. Bless your kind soul Nick, that when the bullies start to chase Alan, your only question is to wonder "what did he do?" Most bullies don't have a reason to be mean. Judy got grounded because she's a compulsive liar. Hence the "I am sick and tired of your lies, young lady" I'm glad you enjoyed this movie. It's a Robin Williams classic!
