This film launched Mary Costa's (Aurora) career as an opera singer; she would go on to appear in 44 operas on stages around the world. Walt Disney expressed concern for her casting due to her thick southern accent (she was originally from Tennessee) but she managed the perfect voice for a princess

I love many other Disney movies more than this one, but I always loved the _art_ and _aesthetic_ of this one more than the rest, and could never quite put my finger on why. Then I watched a documentary here on KZfaq about the making of Sleeping Beauty, and learned that the background art style was derived *directly* from Gothic and Baroque art -- my favorite art eras! The music is also derived directly from the score of the original Sleeping Beauty PLAY, which was written by Pyotr Tchaikovsky -- one of my favorite classical composers, who specialized in very dark and Gothic music. So if you're wondering why the art style for this movie is SO different from all of Disney's other work, it's because it's the one movie they used straight Gothic inspiration for. (the documentary is easy to find here on KZfaq, I'd give it a watch if you're interested!)

Eleanor Audley, the voice of Maleficent and Lady Tremaine (Cindy's stepmother) Fun fact also, Verna Felton voiced Flora and the Fairy Godmother - which is probably why their character designs are similar; the animators tended to model the characters' faces after their performers. XD

@@DCLeadboot Yet Verna Felton has also played the lead elephant in Dumbo, Hathi's wife in The Jungle Book (her last role), Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp and the Queen of Hearts in Alice In Wonderland. Is it just me, or does she often play overbearing women? It can be a good thing, like in The Jungle Book, but a bad thing in most cases. Even the Fairy Godmother kept ignoring Cinderella's pleas about her dress until the last second when she realized her pink dress was torn up, and Flora treats Merryweather like a petulant child all through this movie. However, the Queen of Hearts is a straight up villain, the lead elephant is horrible to this poor baby who happens to have large ears and Aunt Sarah is borderline cruel to poor Lady - it's no wonder she ran away.

Contrary to popular belief, Walt didn’t actually like princesses: He liked their STORIES, but felt Snow White was the definitive classic princess, Cinderella was the contemporary 50’s princess, and by the time he got to Sleeping Beauty, he was more interested in the overall visual style of a medieval tapestry. That’s why some fans complain that Aurora seems like a “generic” character compared to the ones we got in the 90’s Renaissance.

The art style in this film is just gorgeous. It's so unique. The way Maleficent carries herself is so awesomely animated. At ease, always in control. Collected. Disarmingly polite. Until she lets all hell lose on you. There is also no way Prince Phillips horse Samson is not related to Maximus from Tangled. For the darkness... Walt often said you didn't need to pander to kids. They were capable of handling dark stories and situations. He made his films with dark, unambiguously evil villains and showed they could be beaten. Love when people reacting to these old films say x scene reminds them of y new movie. It's usually the other way around. People in modern film making draw inspiration from these older films. Smaug in the Hobbit was inspired by Maleficent's dragon form. Both Guillermo del Torro and Peter Jackson said as much.

The student body voted and the results were close but the girl who cosplayed Aura won the competition by three votes with the title, "Best Looking Princess" and a $10 gift card for Target.

The one thing that always stands out for me about this movie, is the hand painted backgrounds. One being the dancing in the forest. It brings that much more beauty into the film which makes it so timeless. You can just imagine all the time and effort it took too. EDIT: The artist in me always felt the dress should've turned purple when the two colours struck the dress. But the feud had to live on, so oh well :D

I was so excited when I heard about this reaction yesterday that I had trouble sleeping, and even had a dream of you watching/reacting to this movie because of the passion I have for it (I may need help lol). For Sleeping Beauty is my favorite movie, not Disney movie or animated movie but my favorite movie ever. I love the beauty of this film, how every brick on the wall has so much detail, even down to the leaves. It clearly became "the moving tapestry" it was envisioned to be. Which forced the plot to be more simple so that the animation could be at its best, even the comedy had to be "sophisticated" to uniform with the style. I love that they used the music from the ballet of the same name, and Mary Costa's warm operatic voice as "an extension of speech" for Aurora. Aurora is one of my favorite princesses because she lived as a peasant but even so behaved and moved not just as a princess but a queen, showing that you can choose how people perceive you based on your behavior and not just what you appear to be. In addition she is regal, dignified and the "personification of femininity". I love that they used the character more than in the fairytale and gave her many layers. And Im glad that this film eventually received the financial success it deserved, not that money determines how great the art is but that it rewards its greatness. Lastly Im very happy that you took the time to visit this "treasure". :)

If you think about it.... the entire kingdom missed out and slept though the most epic Dragon fight. Phillip by far did the most heroic act any prince could perform. Fought past a horde of angry goblins to escape the Forbidden mountain, eluded the attacks of a powerful sorceress, forged his way through a forest of impenetrable thorns, and fought a fire-breathing dragon without hesitation to save Aurora.

Interesting little fact that I looked up from sleeping beauty lore: The spinning wheel is a symbol for maturity. So by pricking her finger on it, Maleficent was actually giving Aurora the opportunity to grow up and be her own person. By burning all the spinning wheels in the kingdom, the king was essentially saying, "No, she'll never grow up. Ever."

I watched this movie for the first time in years a few years ago and completely forgot how damned good it was! Maleficent is probably one of the creepiest Disney villains for me--at least in animation--with her laugh, anger, turning into a dragon, but what especially sends me is when she lured Aurora to prick her finger. The silent stare paired with the music matching the animation and the fairies coming to save her is not only creepy in every way, but also brilliant in every way. I'm not saying this is a favorite Disney movie for me, but at the same time I'm not gonna act like it's not good. And yes, I like the movie Maleficent, too, but I haven't seen the sequel yet.

Only Nick could make me smile at his reactions to the opening credits of the film! Yup, this is the same Maleficent. She started the trend of villainous characters getting their own movie(like "Cruella")The movie is more from her POV though. I'd suggest it down the line, though the story is way different than this one in terms of the fairies and all(Maleficent is less "mistress of all evil"and became more "person who was screwed over".) Fun fact: Eleanor Audley, who does the voice for Maleficent, also voiced Lady Tremaine(Cinderella's wicked stepmother). You can find black and white images online of parts where they acted out scenes, with her wearing the cloak and horns! The entire final scene, with Maleficent on the tower and the music as she creates obstacles for Philip, up until her death, is still one of the greatest movie scenes of all time for me. If you want to see the scariest male villain in the early Disney era, check out "the Black Cauldron". The Horned King is definitely terrifying.

The art of this movie is so beautiful and to me the most original of all Disney movies. The homage to medieval painting art styles with flat perspective and cubic shapes in the vegetation mixed to it 😍 Plus the music is so great, most of it is taken from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet and reworked a bit to get along with the story. To me the best part that of the movie is when Maleficent guides Aurora in order to fall into her trap and find the spinning wheel falling into her deep sleep. This is scary and fascinating at the sametime, the lighting effects and the music are perfect 👌 AND, what I also love about it is that Aurora isn't the main character. The story is entirely seen from the three fairies's point of view, except for the part in the woods with Aurora and the Prince of course, and it works so well ! I will love this movie forever

Honestly, Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite films from Walt Disney’s era. Do I wish more character development had been given to Aurora and Phillip? Of course, but there’s so much in the film to appreciate. The backgrounds are beautiful, and the music is amazing, both from Tchaikovsky and George Burns, I mean, the climax score as Phillip is escaping from Maleficent’s castle and fighting her as a dragon is phenomenal. Speaking of Maleficent, she is, without question, one of THE best Disney villains, top 3 easily. I also love how the three good fairies had their own individual personalities, and I love the spitfire that is Merryweather. She doesn’t stand for ANYONE’S bs, she was ready to take on Maleficent herself on more than one occasion!

This is one of my favorites of all Disney animation, for two main reasons: 1: The look of it. This has some of the most impressive visual styling ever -- angular and medieval and squared-off, unlike any other Disney (the work of the artist Eyvind Earle). 2: The music, which is all (except for the kings' drinking song) derived from Tchaikovsky's "The Sleeping Beauty," one of the greatest and most beautiful of all 19th-century ballets.

Timeless classic. The Maleficent movies are trash compared to this masterpiece. Fun Fact: Eleanor Audley--one of Walt Disney's favorite voice artists, most memorably as Lady Tremaine in Cinderella (1950)--initially turned the part of Maleficent down, much to Disney's surprise. As it later transpired, Audley was in the midst of battling a bout of tuberculosis and did not want to tax her voice too much. Fortunately, she recovered in time and accepted the part.

I love the background and the art of this film. Such an amazing classic. And the song Once Upon a Dream is a masterpiece.

Loved it! You honestly have the best, most beautiful and genuine reactions ever. I love how even something as simple as the colours of a scene or the look a character gives can give you such a touching reaction. It comes so naturally to you! I used to tend to focus almost entirely on just the plot of the movie, and now your reactions have inspired me to appreciate that, as well as the smaller details as well. (Also, I used to be obsessed with this movie as a kid, I lost count of how many times I’ve seen it, so it was great to see you react to it for the first time!) Thanks for the great vid!

Well, the other commenters seem to be dogging on it, but despite having some problems, the Maleficent movie is definitely worth checking out and forming your own opinion on, I'd say. I don't think everyone necessarily understands that the movie was never TRYING to be a live-action remake of the Sleeping Beauty movie, and is instead a complete reimagining of the film, from the perspective of Maleficent, in the style of, say, Wicked. It's a version in which her own narration and perspective is allowed to expand her from a one-dimensional evil villain into a more fleshed-out character in more of a moral grey. I don't want to spoil anything really, but it puts forth a rather human set of motivations that the audience can understand, or even root for. On top of that, Angelina Jolie is an inspired choice for Maleficent, and she's clearly having a blast playing the part.
