11:35 Katniss missed because she wasn't used to using a heavy bow like the Capital had given her. Once she compensated for it, she nailed the shot.
@Freyka_
@Freyka_ Жыл бұрын
It wasn't about the heaviness, but about that a bow her dad made for her wasn't shooting exactly straight, typical stuff with most of handmade things, also considering the fact in what condidtions it was made. Capitol's bow was wayy more accurate, almost perfect and she wasn't used to it shooting exactly where she was aiming.
@ScragsP22
@ScragsP22 Жыл бұрын
@@Freyka_ Lol!! You’re both right. It was those 2 things mixed with the fact that the capitol bow was made of a more high tech material that she wasn’t used to so she had to get accustomed to the feel. Had they watched her second shot and were smart enough to understand all that they would’ve been extremely impressed. To acclimate after one test shot so perfectly would’ve been impossible but she did it.

The three finger hand sign is explained in the book. Its from district 12 and used as a farewell to loved ones. As they are a mining community, the chance of death by a mine a collapse is very high so it is often exchanged between families as the men go to work. 12 uses it as a goodbye to their tributes every year for the hunger games because its a silent way of showing mourning. Once in the games, Katniss is just doing what she knows to do to show she cared for Rue and saying she's sorry for her death. It turns into a symbol of respect for Katniss and rebellion against the capital in 11. It also becomes significant in later books/movies.
@katnisskern828
@katnisskern828 Жыл бұрын
The three-fingered gesture is hardly ever used in District 12 anymore. Katniss knows what it means (“admiration/goodbye to someone you love”) but is surprised that it was used when she volunteered to save her sister because she didn’t think that people in District 12 saw her that way. It was never stated in the books that it was used to say goodbye to the miners as they went off to work. Katniss just recalls that it’s very occasionally used/seen at funerals. It later became a salute for the rebels.

Katniss isn't totally faking her interest in Peeta in this movie but she is very conflicted. This is where the book helps some, in the cave she says that second kiss was real. She also says when she is afraid he will die that it's not just about the sponsers or that she doesn't want to be alone rather she doesn't want to lose him, the boy with the bread.
@goldenrkive
@goldenrkive Жыл бұрын
A major reason why a war never happened was because the districts were kept isolated. They never had any contact, or knowledge about the other districts outside of what they saw during the Hunger Games (in the books Katniss also thinks that a conversation she has with Rue where they talk about their districts wouldn’t be shown as the Capitol want the districts to be unaware). The Hunger Games are also used as a tool to further this separation and make the districts each others competition/enemies. Not only because they want their kids to return but also because the winning district gets money and food - which they all need. This literally breeds resentment and hostility towards other districts. Riots do happen from time to time but they’re always isolated and dealt with fairly easily because there is no connection between the districts (or even really amongst the people in a district because of what the Capitol does). Alliances also happen in the games but it’s all a means to an end. Rue and Katniss were different, they were actually friends and cared about each other. The way Katniss honoured Rue after her death was a first and quite shocking considering they came from different districts. This can be seen as in the books, District 11 sends Katniss some bread as a thank you which would’ve taken pretty much the whole district to chip in to buy it and send it (another first). Katniss and Rue’s friendship actively went against all the ideology that the Capitol had been spreading for the past 74 years.

the 3 finger salute isn’t their version of an applause. they don’t explain it’s meaning in the movies but this is how katniss describes it in the books, “it’s an odd rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. it means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.” also i love how you were so confused on peetas true intentions throughout the movie. since the book is only through katniss’s pov the reader is meant to feel the same way. we never know whether to trust him or not since katniss never really trusts him. i’ve seen a lot of hunger games reactions but yours is by far one of the best

One of my favorite things about the cultural impact of The Hunger Games (books and films) is that when the first book was released, it was marketed as “The Next Harry Potter” in terms of its potential. And then AFTER the books and films had all been released, every single dystopian book/film for the next TEN YEARS tried to market themselves as “The Next Hunger Games” 🤭 the cultural impact of The Hunger Games was huge for young adult fiction and was primarily the reason why there was such popularity for other huge franchises like The Maze Runner and Divergent. And as a young girl that was a teenager when the books/films were coming out, god it was so cool to see a franchise where young women take action and promote change be so incredibly popular. Awesome reaction, hope you enjoy these films!

My personal favorite of the films is the second one. Catching Fire is amazing!! No Spoilers : So President Snow is the bad guy and he’s essentially the evil dictator, there is a movie coming out in November about his backstory. You are right about Haymitch being traumatized from the games but Haymitch’s game was a little different. So every 25 years they have a Quarter Quell and they usually change up the games somehow. The first Quarter Quell the districts had to vote who to be in the games and the second one (Haymitch’s gam) It was 2 boys and 2 girls making 48 tributes and similar to Katniss had a friend die in his arms and showed up the capital this led to the murder of his family by President Snow.

The books are darker than the movies. Katniss is starving and peeta burns the bread on purpose to give to her, knowing his mother will hurt him. When her Dad died in a mine collapse her mum went into a deep depression and Katniss had to look after them both. After she blows up the food she loses hearing in one ear and s given a built in hearing aid at the end. Peeta actually loses the leg that Cato injured and has a prosthetic from then on. They both actually get the berries in their mouths before they call a halt and tell them they won. When younger Katniss sees a boy and a girl running away from a district, the capital shoot the boy through the chest with a harpoon and drag him into a hovercraft. Later Katniss sees the girl in the capital she is a servant/slave who has had her tongue cut out.

As to Katniss's missed shot, she hadn't practiced with the bows at the Games, and it had a different pull than she was used to. She had to fire it without knowing how it would respond. Once she did, she was able to make the adjustment pretty quickly. The movies miss it, but Caesar Flickerman was actually a mostly good guy who tried to help the tributes however he could, by making them as memorable as he could and helping them if they got stuck.

in my opinion, it wasn't rue's death alone that sparked the riot, many kids, even young ones have died in the 73 games before this one. however, because of the capitol and the games, the districts were very segregated and even hated each other. katniss's kindness to rue, giving her a proper burial, and saluting district 11 showed a certain solidarity between the districts and forced them to see that while they've been aiming at each other, the true enemy was and always will be the capitol.
@arnieadam
@arnieadam Жыл бұрын
Glad you picked this one. I just rewatched these myself after not having seen them since they first came out and I had forgotten a lot of it. I read the books first and so my biggest let-down in this first one is that in the book after Rue dies and District 11 sees Katniss take care of her, they pooled their meger funds and send her a tribute before they rioted. They left that tribute out of the movie. The upside is that the next 3 sequels to finish the story are still on Netflix until the end of the March. And as bad as you think it all can get and the reveals are...it's so much worse. I hope you follow through with them.

Here's some answers to questions you had. (These probably have all been answered a million times lol) If I remember correctly, Peeta burnt the bread on purpose so he could give it to her. Of course that caused him to be beat but he is such a kind soul he did it anyway. When Peeta says "I watched you going home." It's, fortunately, not that weird. It's because he works at the bakery so he was able to see her pass by from there. The reason there has never been a rebellion yet is that communication between the districts is non existent. They (the normal citizens, not anyone working for the capital) know nothing about the other districts so there is no way to plan/strategize a rebellion. At the end of the games, Peeta's leg needs to be amputated and he gets a prosthetic leg. However, they don't include this in the movies which is unfortunate :/ . A lot of times that he is seen as clumsy in the next movies is because, in the book, he isn't used to his new prosthetic leg and he struggles to get proper traction or it gets stuck on things. Let me know if you have any questions! And anyone who read this books let me know if I missed something/got something wrong!

The mutts they released towards the end were far more terrifying in the book, if I’m remembering correctly they resembled the fallen tributes and had tags with each of the district numbers of who the mutt was

i remember when i read the book, i found the fact that the dogs at the end had the faces of the dead tributes incredibly eerie but they didn't use it in the film

BTW I don't think it was mentioned in the movies, but the books let us know that the youngest kids (who are 12) only enter with one ticket into the bowl, and for each year you get an extra ticket (up to 7 for the 18 year olds) so Prim is even less likely to be picked since she was just one ticket.

7 if you’re 18 is lucky tbh, Gale had his name in the bowl like 42 times in the one year because they put your name in more for getting tesserae and I think Katniss name was in 20 times for the same reason.

Also in the book re the animals they released , there was one for every dead tribute and the beasts- I call them hell hounds- had the tributes eyes in them. They were also different sizes-(they mentioned a small one-Rue, a huge one thresh and one with green eyes, Glimmer from District 1. I think. I wish they had done that in the move.

Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic in Winter's Bone as well. It's one of her first films, but it shows her acting chops! And such a crazy storyline too!

Tom Holland was never in the hunger games franchise. Peeta is played by Josh Hutcherson and Gayle is played by Miley Cyrus’s ex husband.

Hunger games is an amazing franchise and the books are awesome. There are a few details that are not shown in the movies that would give you more insight into the relationship between Katniss, Peeta and Gale, a bit of backstory to them. Katniss is in survival mode basically her whole life so she has more urgent matters in her mind to have time for a romance. She likes them for different reasons and you will get more details about the difference in upcoming movies. Also, Peeta is such a great nice character. Also, the books go a little bit more into the politics of things and it is really interesting to gasp the whys of how things are in that world. I'm really happy you decided to watch it :) Great reaction! Thank you!
