Ever since I was about 8 years old I have always had an unusual fascination with the mechanical watch. I have always considered them pieces of art. Even the most inexpensive models . Most people just don't understand what an incredible feat of mechanical engineering they are . I could sit and stare at the movement for hours. There is nothing more relaxing than listening to the tick , tick . tick .

On a pure asthetic level, I would only pay big bucks for the Reverso. I'll take my IWC 853, with a completely faded dial over these current watches. I found my watch in the cheap watch bin at the thrift store. I wound it, and it was too smooth for a ETA movement, or any cheap watch. It kept perfect time? I kept it sit on my nightstand a year. On boring night, I noticed a fish on the crown. "Why would Timex put a logo on a crown?" I opened the SnapBack case.(they are incredibly tight. Don't use a regular watch back knife. Use the tool that looks like a chisel to open the back, and the case. Be careful.) To my surprise, a beautiful IWC 1955's movement shone back at me. Well that started my obsession with horology. Watch repairing is not that difficult. Look for an old, complete watch online, and put it to life. It's a good feeling, and won't cost you a house. Oh yea, as to huge watches. It's a fad. Its not wrist size. My IWC is 36mm and looks, and feels fine. I wouldn't want it bigger, or smaller. I'm nice you get into this hobby/profession your tastes will change. You will also see through the BS. Over three hundred grand for that Chinese looking watch? I will be putting together watch repair videos, and hopefully a watch repair book. A modern book.

The reason why many of these precision watches cost several hundred thousand Euro is not only because they require time to create in a precision manner... They are expensive in fiat currency like Euro & dollars because those fiat currencies are worthless by comparison to the quality of the labor & parts that go into them - but in comparison to the value of real currency such as silver or gold, they are not super expensive but only relatively so - despite the fact that these real currencies (precious metals) are manipulated downward by central banks & fiat currency investors in their market value.

I can never figure out what I think is the most interesting aspects of watches. If I think it's about accuracy, I can applaud a watch that syncs to GPS or the atomic clock in Fort Collins; because it's hard to beat a watch that can sync itself daily to very accurate reference clocks. But the high tech approach is a bit boring, because the accuracy is external. I am more impressed by the Spring drive - a movement that is an interest hybrid between an automatic ( self winding mechanical) and a quartz watch. Or maybe a high beat quartz watch with thermal compensation that's accurate to a few seconds a year. Going another direction, we have insanely complicated mechanical watch complications, which are a wonder to behold; the amount of moving parts in a perpetual repeater is mind boggling. But outside of the spring drive, mechanical watches are not very good timekeepers.

Any advice or uploads you may have or provide post purchasing a timepiece? The insiders guide to know how of maintenance or repair to trusted repair companies (not dealership) or how to research them. Do it yourself scratch removals or polishing techniques, watch repair and tool kits the brands used. Purchasing quality interchangeable bracelets, rubber straps, and alligator leather. All of the sudden a $40,000 Pigini accordion or a $300,000 Fazioli grand look like a bargain compared to this. But then again if you can't impress on a $5,000 Roland accordion or a $70,000 Steinway or Yamaha grand, then you won't impress with a Pigini or a Fazioli. In my opinion, if a high-end exclusive watch is made by one person, this person should either keep this watch, or get the retail price for it. For instance, one craftsman (-woman) should get the $350,000 for the Lange & Sohne she made, or should keep the watch for herself. I think it's fair, no? Anybody challenge my view?
