Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I’m your host Deffinition and you’re now locked into the channel where we break down all the latest movies, new game releases, tv shows and comic books.
This episode we’re gonna be covering one of the most mysterious elements of the new HBO Show Watchmen which is Ozymandias’ Plan and what exactly is going on with the character.
There will be heavy spoilers for the graphic novel and first three episodes of the show here and if this turns out to be true then big ones going forward so if you wanna go into the show without having anything ruined then I highly suggest that you turn off now.
Without further ado let’s get into our breakdown of his plan.
Ozymandias History
Ok so just a quick recap on the character’s entire history in case you haven’t read the graphic novel and just wanna get up to speed.
So Ozymandias, real name Adrian Veidt, was a masked vigilante born in 1939 to very rich parents.
After they died when the character was 17, he inherited their fortune but decided to donate it all to charity, choosing to build himself from the ground up instead. Veidt traveled the world, following in the footsteps of Alexander The Great and upon completing his journey, decided to become a crime fighter.
Extremely intelligent and someone who had trained their body to peak physical condition, Veidt quickly rose through the ranks until he became a renowned vigilante with the reputation for being the smartest man on the planet.
Ozymandias HBO Show Biography
Now so far in the show we know that it is still widely believed that there was an alien attack 1985 though there exists some conspiracy theories that this was a hoax.
As for Veidt in 2012 after Trieu Industries purchased his companies the character went missing. Following this in 2017, the governor of Vietnam claimed that the Vietnamese Liberation Front had assassinated him as an act of terror against the United States and on September 9th, 2019, Veidt was officially declared dead.
A Journey Through Space
Either way, Ozy has been using them to test the temperatures of the environment outside of his prison and this is why we see the clone in episode 3 come back frozen solid. Ozy realizes that he needs a thicker skin and thus attempts to use a Buffalo’s hide though he is stopped by the Game Warden, who is probably the Warden of the prison…yeah the clues in the title.
The catapult could be potentially used to throw him beyond the barrier of the prison into the cold reaches of space which he will need the suit for.
There is also a theory floating around that Ozy is using all of the bodies of the clones in order to build a raft. This ties in with the Black Freighter work from the source material in which a stranded sailor uses the corpses of his comrades in order to build a raft to sail back to the mainland. In that, the character goes mad and ends up murdering his own family who he believes have been taken by the titular Black Freighter that left him shipwrecked and in the story, this always had clear allusions to Ozymandias’ arc.

Could this also be carrying on with the character attempting to carry out a similar process to the character sailor in that book?

UPDATE - After watching episode 4, I believe that Trieu put him there in exchange for the company and he now regrets it. She can clearly manipulate environments too and create babies etc (like the clones) so she may have trapped him. It looks like he's on the Moon too.

Iv'e been looking for a theory that claims he's on mars, I think you're dead on. Arctic pole is cold but can be offset with warm clothes, the vacuum of space not so much, the guy comes back frozen solid. Also, Veidt tells him "are you ready to venture into the great beyond?". The obvious double entendre here being "are you ready to die". However, we see Veidt is pissed when the servant comes back dead, meaning he intended him to live. The great beyond is another expression for the vacuum of space. He' making space suits with knights armor, and using whatever paste he was lathering on the fabric as an insulator. Last hint to this is that his servant is tied to a rope, we don't see what happens to him, but we do see Veidt's catapult, meaning he's most likely shooting them into space, and pulling them back down with the rope to see if they survive. How he plans on traveling to earth once he is in Mars's orbit is beyond me.

I think Manhattan built an artificial prison for him, quite possibly on Mars. He was trying to create life, and a world, so maybe he figured it all out, at least partially.

I sincerely hope that these efforts and that letter are a misdirection and attempt to draw Dr Manhattan to him, rather than the ridiculous idea of using a cobbled together space suit. Hopefully the "smartest man alive" has a better plan. I think he does.

not impressed with what they have done with him..i like jeremy though.. they are just portraying him as a senile old eccentric..I much much prefferred the ozzy from the movie...That was so well done and he was badass ,sharp, and a force to be reckoned with, though noone and no force on earth can stand b4 dr manhatten

Hence why i think viedts clones were made with ostermans DNA. He gets to kill the only person who has ever been bested him. I imagine that insult wounded veidts pride. And possibly as insurance if john were to ever return, he could use the possiblity of returning his human form against manhattan, heres your orignal body and i also made a clone of janie for you.

The shot of Veidt's sky transitioning right into the moon in the next shot tells you exactly where he is. It also explains the birthdays - if the moon rotates around the earth every day, then every day is your 'birthday' on it.

Have you heard the theory that it’s a game he made for himself? The main support for this is the letter from the warden has him nearly call Ozzy “Master” like his closes but he cuts Crookshanks off before she can say the whole word. In the subtitles we can clearly see “mas-“ is the way he addresses him

Dr. Manhattan is seen on live tv destroying the house on Mars, not building it. This makes more sense for the timeline because it would mean Ozy escaped around episode 1 and after a few weeks passed he crashed down on the farm in episode 4.

Only thing with that is that the candles grow in numbers, first one in the first episode and two in the second, Veidts Likely been stranded for a while to know the location as well as he does and the servants as well as he does so I took the ‘birthdays’ as marking a year anniversary there

@@heavyspoilers Yeah I saw that. I have a dozen theories, but all have holes in them. I'm wondering if Ozy's plan is part of the Tulsa conspiracy that Sister Night's grandfather told her about. Or Tulsa could be a false reality like Ozy is in. Remember when Angela's grandpa said that if he told her everything her head would explode? I was thinking she could be a clone because they never told us how she survived the night she got shot.

I think he may have run himself through the Intrinsic Field Subtractor and the "game" is his consciousness' attempt to rematerialize his body and become a second Dr Manhattan. This is also something Lindelof explored in both Lost and the Leftovers, and Lindelof did say he was interested in what the world's smartest man does for an encore after saving the world.

I think this theory is a miss as it doesn't explain why he arranged the bodies to spell out "save me". It most likely is connected to the tower being built in Tulsa by his former company given the satellite.

The Suit Ozzi created was to test its protective seal, you see if he could activate a device inside the suit that had the same elements of space and the suit contains it from escaping then the same could be said in a reverse situation as a containment, what cant get out also cant get in so once he's in the suit this test proves the suits seal is tight an escape is Inevitable.

So in the next episode you see Veidt finally getting a capsule together to be catapulted into mars and it does infact reach earth, you see this because on earth they see a "shooting star" or a "meteor" looking object fly thru the sky, than hit the ground, killing many people. So clearly, he does leave his captivity, and reaches earth. In the next episode you also hear Veidt say "Mankind is ready for change" before he tries to leave. So obviously he is on his way to EARTH. Cue: Dr. Manhattan coming to Earth ;)

What happens to Ozzie reminds me of what happens with Gargunza in Miracle Man. MM keeps cloning him and trying to keep him in captivity but he keeps trying to escape. He tries removing from Gargunza's mind what makes Gargunza evil But when he does so, Gargunza stops being brilliant.

If Ozymandias is on Mars how will he get to Earth once he escapes the “prison”. I don’t think there are any space stations around Mars because I don’t think Dr.Manhattan would allow it. Even if that suit Ozymandias is making works that small oxygen take won’t sustain him for very long. Let me know when I can expect my new MCU box set. Thanks!

I assumed the clone was frozen in space, but it could have been from the freezing temperature outside. His hidden fortress had a dome, but it was a physical barrier, he couldn't throw someone out of it. Dr. Manhattan will know what he does, regardless right?

My theory is Dr Manhattan DIDN'T do it, he seriously doesn't give a fuck about humanity, why would he even bother imprisoning Ozymandias. I believe it was Lady Trieu who locked him up, since he disappeared around the time Trieu took over his company. Trieu probably knows what Veidt did so that's why he agreed to his captivity and is probably living in a terrarium somewhere built by Trieu industries (probably the clones were made by Trieu as well), the trailer shows Silk Spectre and Sister KNight visiting a terrarium like environment most likely by Trieu Industries, and her company is probably capable off a lot of advanced tech stuff like cloning.

The only thing I could take away from the previews of what was to come was that Ozy was planning to replicate what he did before but on a smaller scale, to once again scare people away from war and disagreement. I hope I'm wrong, that'd just be a rehash of the comic. I've liked the show more with the 2nd and 3rd episode more though.

How did he fake the squid attack? The people of New York could just tell the rest of the world nothing happened. Unless the people of New York were brain washed to. I don’t understand how they keep saying 3 million have died but also say it’s fake.

@@rancidarm people did die. Because Veidt had not perfected the teleportation technology, when the squid got teleported into New York some of its legs blew up (along with other parts of its body) and killed it and when it died it sent out a psychic Shockwave - killing a ton of people within a close proximity and making others who weren't close enough see maddening visions of aliens invading.

I haven't read the graphic novel, so I'm a little at a disadvantage. Anyways, you mention in the comic that the world is more advanced, but in the tv show, people are still using pagers, no smartphones, nor tablets. Computers/laptops seem nonexistent however there is that Dr. Manhattan phonebooth thingy. Anyways am I missing anything in my observations?

(Sorry by advance for my bad english but I’m french...) I think all the scenes with Ozy are in the past. First candle for his first year of captivity (2012)...second candle (2013)...third (2014). This means that he will escape in his 7 year of captivity if he had been incarcerated in 2012. That is in 2019, now, at the present time. So, perhaps the newspaper saying Veidt is dead is true. Perhaps, does he die during his escape...

Rorschach left Dr. Manhatten no choice; Ozy's plan for peace, although evil, was effective. Ozy had finally united humankind, something that even the Blue God had failed to achieve.

I have no idea. Feels like each character is in their own prison, their own instrinsic field, but some prisons are bigger and more luxurious looking than other prisons. Jon is fine being freed from these prisons because he can survive, but others characters feel they don't have this power. That's why Jon is dressed up as a super person, when really he just represents that the only prison is what we build for ourselves - and it can be a lovely place. One where you live with your life partner forever. These prisons - the larger they get - become a heavy responsibility, too, which is what Alex maybe feels weighed down by. Nobody needs that much, and he obviously wants company that aren't paid servants - just like everyone else. But that doesn't mean his job isn't to take care of these servants and then release them into the world, like a parent raising children.

Based on last weeks episode it seems hes in some type of prison world Dr. Manhattan has devised for him and his plan is to simply escape ergo the catapult to see what is up there.

Which kinda definitely proves they're on Mars. If he launched the dude into Earth's sky, he wouldn't get nearly that frosty. Mars is verrrrry cold for half of its orbit though. You'd freeze solid in a few minutes without proper insulation.

@@rickvanboberson Yeah, DM is definitely above vengeance. But he's not above being an absolute cockwaddle to the people he dislikes the most. I think the video we see (the footage actually showed him destroying it) is just a hint that Veidt is under DM's supervision. If you remember the magnet blocks Topher was playing with in episode 2, it was actually the exact same building as the Mars and Veidt castles.

It's not his birthday, it's an anniversary. That's literally spoken in the very first episode, in the first ever scene of Veidt. And it's implied through the third episode that the *"anniversaries"* aren't taking place yearly, but rather, daily. I agree that it's without a doubt the Dr Manhattan's doing, but your setup around 4:50 is totally incorrect.

The only problem I have with the daily thing is that I don’t think he could build the catapult, suit, make all the plans, celebrate his birthday, write a play, have the clones learn their lines etc in the space of 3 days

One note: they say "your anniversary" not "your birthday". I see this as perhaps the date of his imprisonment? Small difference, but I believe worth noting. It could be the anniversary of something else?

I made the same erroneous assumption that Veidt was experiencing a ground hog day like affect, having a birthday every day. However, this is wrong.. what is going on, is that we're witnessing annual updates on Veidt's experience living in the assumed oasis. Each year, each cake (with additional candle) visual cue to the audience the passage of time occurring. This is confirmed, when the 4th cake shown, with 4 candles.. Veidt indicates that he has been there 4 years now. Clear, indisputable evidence, confirming that each cake indicates another year he's experienced living in isolation. Now, if I could only understand where he actually is. Facts are, that he teleports at a certain altitude to a moon of Jupiter, and when he is pulled back, instead of coming back down from the sky where he teleported initially, he actually arrives ground level in the forest, at what seems to be the same distance/range from the catapult.

The film will explain some things but not others. Theres some great youtube videos explaining each episode. I never read the comic so like you I was totally confused, though that is intentional to a point even for those that read the comics. They say that the comic did the same thing. Just through stuff out and explained it later. I found the youtube videos super helpfull and have made the show more enjoyable.

Personally, I think his prison is in the Antarctic. The big problem with Mars as a prison, outside of lack of atmosphere and solar heat, is one of gravity. It would be far easier for Dr. Manhattan to maintain a closed system on Earth than putting it on Mars where low gravity would affect everything.

Dr. Manhattan doesn’t give a damn about Ozymandius or anyone on Earth and people are focusing in on him WAY to much, yea he’s going to come back to Earth eventually but only when some serious shit goes down and he will have some kind of curiosity. The misdirection is pretty clear to me

Probably Dr Manhattan. The amount of references to him not being able to look human so far have to be foreshadowing. We know he can duplicate himself and he went to Mars to create life. So having duplicates of two specific people (one of whom looks astoundingly like Jon before the accident that turned him into Dr Manhattan) in Veidt's prison on Mars makes complete sense.

I do think he’s on Mars. When he’s kicking the clones frozen body, we get a wide shot showing the skyline with the sun. If you look to the left of the sun you can see a blue spot which is obviously just an illusion caused by the sunlight, BUT considering the content of the show I think that blue spot is left there for a reason. It’s meant to represent earth... or Dr Manhattans presence. In any case, I can’t wait to learn more about what’s happening. I LOVE this show!

Meant to post this in the main comments Dope vid, thanks for making it. I’m very intrigued by the Dead Bodies/Black Freighter correlation. If it does happen, Ozy will build a whole spaceship from dead bodies to smash through the wall and return to earth, in an effort to save it, but once again it’s a misguided attempt that ends up doing more bad than good. I am very partial to SOMEONE OTHER THAN MANHATTAN having placed him in another world/dimension. At the end of the comic Doc Manhattan says he neither condemns nor supports Ozy’s actions, and he’s being kept there to Lee him from misguidedly destroying millions of lives again. If it is Manhattan, Ozy is there because he requested sanctuary from Doc M because the world was out to kill him.

The show is cool and surreal and so strange that it grabs ones interest but , it cant compare to the watchman movie...that movie was just Incredible, no matter how many times ive seen it ,it blows me the F away...I wish they would show some Real super powers exhibited by the characters..so far , they are just ordinary humans with some good skills but thats abt it.. ozzy Should have super speed and strength above the ordinary, and manhattan Really needs to make an appearance, though I dont see how a limited budget show could match the incredible depiction of the movie...but, you never know!

Alan Moore’s only mistake in the graphic novel was the faux alien invasion. There are DEFINITELY problems with Snyder’s adaptation, but getting the nations of the world to rally against Manhattan, someone everyone has seen and knows over aliens that don’t exist and will never likely appear again (short of Ozy just recycling this BS every now and again to really risky himself being caught) seems more plausible. No rehash needed. They know he’s there and they’ll be scared to end of civilization of his return.
