I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when I was 7 years old. In the 13 years since being diagnosed I have witnessed so much change and awareness to people with autism spectrum disorder. I struggled with social queues, I was super derpy and just overall awkward and I hated myself because I wasn’t like everyone else. I obsessed over everything from penguins to cars. I mean I’m twenty and i collect hot wheels cars. I and have so much useless information in my brain that it blows peoples minds. I took theatre class in middle school and most of high school and that helped me so much with my communication and my overall life In general. I’m the last year or so I know now that I’m different but not less. I’m proud of who I am and who I’m becoming. This list is proof that in 20 years the awareness and acceptance for ASD in society has gotten so much more. So thank you.

High-functioning Asperger's is an oxymoron back when they diagnose Asperger's. A contradiction in terms. In the old diagnostic system difference between high functioning autism and Asperger's is high functioning autism significant language delay as a child, where's Asperger's don't both are the same. Nowadays it is just called autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and referred to as autistic new current diagnosis in America and in UK.
@brianarbenz1329

I grew up with High Functioning Autism (formerly known as Asperger) but did not suspect that until I was diagnosed three years ago. Now, in retrospect, everything about my out-of-synch social relations makes sense. I agree with what James Durbin said: "If people don't like me for who I am, I don't need to change for other people." But I certainly did not grow up with that outlook. I always tried to "fix" myself so I'd fit in, but through this process I was repeatedly damaging myself. Now I'm finding comfort with the way I am. And thank _goodness_ we now live in a time of more sensitivity to those who are different, an often wrongly demonized change. As I came of age, I experienced ridicule from most peers, and even one teacher for an entire school year. It was very difficult for me in the social realm. The changes going on to open people's minds to those not typical are wonderful and I am _so_ fortunate to be living in this time, allowing me to re-process my past along the lines of what Mr. Durbin said. For including his words in this, I thank you.

Thanks for making this video. I'm Autistic myself and was diagnosed late, at the age of 37. It's reassuring to know so many famous people are also on the spectrum. One thing though, terminology (here in the U.K.) at least, has changed from "Autistic Spectrum Disorder" to "Autistic Spectrum CONDITION", as it's not an illness or something that we have "wrong" with us. Similarly, we prefer "autistic person" to "person with Autism", for the same reason in that it's like you're saying we've got the flu or Arthritis. I know some people, particularly in the U.S. think it's a sickness and should be cured or "corrected", but the majority of the Autistic community find this offensive and complete rubbish. I'm glad you mentioned that we've banned the "Asperger's" thing now though.

I worked with autistic children in my 20s, and lately one of my students and a fellow teacher have told me they are autistic. A few years ago, they may have kept it hidden. We humans have at least made some progress in acceptance.

I have three kids with autism. My middle child was diagnosed first. She couldn’t talk. Wouldn’t walk until 18 months. Would not be held by anyone. As a baby she had to be in a motorized swing to sleep. My kids are watching this on tv and didn’t understand why they were watching this. I told them that they could do anything they put their mind to it. These are people who are not letting their diagnosis hamper their goals and it should not hamper theirs also. Thank you Ms. Rebecca for this amazing video! You are awesome!

I didn't know I was autistic until my freshman year of high school. I always thought I was just the shy girl with asthma. But knowing I have it, it became a part of me as I grew. I have so much empathy in me. Everyone is different. Autistic people are different. Some have more empathy than others. Some don't talk. I'm considered high functioning and I feel so much empathy it hurts.

I have always respected Dr. Grandin and her work but I did not know the depths of her struggle until I saw the movie about her that starred Clare Danes. She is an absolute rock star! You could have knocked me over with a feather about Anthony Hopkins though but I guess it stands to reason why he is such a phenomenal actor.

Good list! Thank you guys for raising autism awareness and, more importantly, acceptance. Here are some other awesome autistic people that some of you might wanna look into: Example / Elliot Gleave - Rapper, EDM producer and pop musician, who had a number of huge hit singles in the early 2010's, including a collab with Calvin Harris. SpaceGhostPurrp / Markese Money Rolle - Underground rapper and producer who's often credited for inventing the subgenre now known as SoundCloud rap. He also created the rap group Raider Klan, which is where Denzel Curry began his career, and he was a close friend and frequent collaborator with A$AP Rocky during the early 2010's. Doomsday / John Howard - Professional MMA fighter, who briefly worked for the UFC. Savant / Aleksander Vinter - EDM producer with a HUGE catalogue of music. He might be the most active musician of all time, he has literally produced thousands of songs, and he has credited his autism for gifting him with his nonstop focus. He also has his own video game on Steam (which is a banger btw!). Slushii / Julian Scanlan - EDM producer who has produced songs for Monstercat and Rocket League, as well as some very successful collabs with Marshmello. Greta Thunberg - I probably don't need to explain who she is, as she's one of the most successful and widely recognized activists of all time, and she has been very open about discussing her autism. Her special interest in animals and nature is actually what lead her to become a climate activist in the first place.

What a great video! Two of my boys are on the autistic spectrum and I couldn't be prouder of them. They're both at university and doing really well. It was such a struggle getting them the help that they needed as children but it's all been totally worth while. This video is so inspirational proving that you can achieve anything and that labels don't and shouldn't define you.

As someone with autism, I've definitely had people bully me even on Autism Awareness Month, a lot of the teachers in public school were no exception. I love Community. I love Rick & Morty. Hannah Gadsby is funny. Good video Anthony Hopkins is always great, I actually prefer Red Dragon to Manhunter. I love Daryl Hannah, Blade Runner is awesome, I wonder if her character survived Kill Bill (depends on that Black Mamba I'm sure). Who doesn't love Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd original wrote it for him and John Belushi, I wonder if we'll ever get a graphic novel on that idea just to see what it would've been like (they did it with Star Wars)

My life with autism is very complicated at first because I was born as a happy, naughty, shy, wild child despite did not know at the time I still had this condition. When my parents got divorced I started to become quiet, disconnected, never talked to anyone at school or at college (the latter I’m still educated) and lost all happiness. Sometime later when I found out I had autism, was my mother had tattoos of both mine and my sister’s name on both her lower arms and on top of my name is a ribbon which showcases that I’m on the Autism Spectrum, which later in recent years I started to become embracing my autism ness. Thanks WatchMojo for showing me the list of those influential figures who inspired me to do what I want to do in my life for the future for the sake of my condition.

High functioning aspergers is an incorrect understanding. High functioning is an ableist label used by neurotypicals in their efforts to stigmatize us. And added onto aspergers is also redundant.. In addition within the community it is best to realize that we're phasing out any diagnostic references to hans asperger due to his nazi history.

My 28 year old son is an Aspie and he's one of the funniest people I have ever met. He makes me laugh until I cry. He's also the most honest person with a total inability to lie, cheat or steal. He believes strongly in supporting those less fortunate than we are so the lack of empathy label is a myth.. I do worry though about his lack of "real life" friends as the only people he seems close to are the on-line ones he's communicated with for years. He's my joy!

Also something that resonated with me is something that I heard about having a child with Aspergers: It's like deciding to take a trip and you buy the brochure and you plan it, and pack for it and then when you step off the plane you find that its landed you in Hong Kong instead of France. You're still going to have an adventure just not the one you thought you were going to have. Enjoy it!

I was diagnosed as autistic last year at the age of 35. I've felt like an outsider in this world for most of my life. At least I understand myself better now after receiving my diagnosis. The sad part is that my parents suspected me of being autistic when I was 3 years old, but the doctors take them seriously back then. Needless to say, my parents were shocked when I told them they had been right all along.
