Well… Scientology is a cult. Japan has recognized it as such, Germany too. Remember, those two countries have a BIG history with cults, so if they say its a cult, I will 100% believe it. Edit: They recognize them as predatory businesses. I had to fact check myself real quick. But still, they aren’t recognized as an official religion

I always like how these cults make you get rid of everything you own ,yet the leader lives in big place with all kinds of material stuff. That should be the first sign to people it's a cult. leader lives like royalty and doesn't follow the rules he preachs but you have to.

Sounds like a lot of megachurches and tv preachers out there. Their followers don't have to get rid of *everything* but they have to give a good percentage of money and time, plus do what they say or be shunned or abused.

Not a sign that is easily visible when recruiters are sent out to find 'troubled people' to ensnare. Recruiters will be out on the streets to start a conversation, gain trust and give an invite to a place that 'will help' their targets leave behind their troubles with an idyllic living. Of course the targets only see a lovely place to be, fronted by the 'friendly' higher up people. When you are 'troubled' and arrive at a place like that, you probably won't be thinking of how it's funded, are they really bad people and what really goes on behind the facade. You will only know after weeks of being a member, the eventual realisation of what happens when you disagree and try to leave....then they ask you to part with some or all you're money!

@@crissoa I do think the whole line that "anyone could fall into a cult" is remove any responsibility or stigma towards those who do. I think when you start with one false statement, you start to wonder what else is misleading. For example: I know I once did some reading on that group Joachim Phoenix's family was raised in. Flirty fishing was not as described in this video. Instead women in particular were sent out to pick up men, including have sex with them, with the purpose of bringing them into the group. Or to get money via prostitution for the group. The women were coerced/forced to do this. Makes me wonder what else was mixed up or left out here?

I live about 20 minutes from one of these and pass by it on the way to work. Members own lots of businesses in the area and it’s crazy how many stories I’ve heard of them being able to escape legal trouble. As a Christian myself, it’s scary to see that they take such extreme actions and do so many awful things all while claiming to be Christian themselves. It really ruins the reputation for the rest of us. Not all churches and religious organizations are bad, but there are very few good ones left in my opinion.

@@julieporter7805The flirty fishers? I came across someone who had been recruited by a girl he met in a bar and started dating. It turned out she was actually only 16 and he told me her family had got him to move in with them and convert to "Christianity." (He was an Iranian asylum seeker, a client at my place of work, a refugee organisation.) It seemed very odd to me that a devout Christian family would be OK with their 16 year old daughter sleeping with men she picked up in bars. He told me they made him move in with them and work for them like a slave, both in and outside the home, turning over any money to them. He became very disillusioned when his "girlfriend" went out one night and brought home a new man that she slept with at the house. After my suspicions were aroused I did some digging. Turns out The Family, as they had been going by at that time, was still active and here they were in the NE of England. He was a vulnerable target, later I had to call the CAT team and he was sectioned. I was stunned this was going on under our noses. That was around 2003.

@@ticklemebreathless1394 I can't understand it either. Although I was never a Jehovah's Witness, and I never will be, I'm already fully aware of the deceptions, misleading half-truths, and outright lies within the Watchtower's teachings and beliefs. I'm also fully aware of the controversy surrounding how Jehovah's Witnesses handle cases of child sexual abuse. They're also INSANELY anti-LGBTQ+, which is even more problematic for those who were raised as Jehovah's Witnesses and came out as gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans. ...And MY GOSH, DON'T even get me started by how Jehovah's Witnesses treat former members who left. The saddest thing about this is how the shunning, as well as the harmful teachings, have affected many people's mental and emotional well-being, some of who tragically committed suicide. Although they may be less violent than other cults, and although there are good people within the organization, that doesn't make Jehovah's Witnesses any less dangerous. We need to spread awareness about how dangerous this cultish organization actually is, and help current members wishing to leave to gain the courage to do so. Although the Watchtower Society may try to stop us from spreading this vital message about the dangers of Jehovah's Witnesses, we WILL NOT stay silent any longer.

Qualities and characteristics of a cult : 1. The group displays an excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader, and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law. 2.Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished. 3.Mind-altering practices (such as meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, or debilitating work routines) are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts about the group and its leader(s). 4.The leadership dictates, sometimes in great detail, how members should think, act, and feel (e.g., members must get permission to date, change jobs, or marry-or leaders prescribe what to wear, where to live, whether to have children, how to discipline children, and so forth). 5.The group is elitist, claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader(s), and its members (e.g., the leader is considered the Messiah, a special being, an avatar-or the group and/or the leader is on a special mission to save humanity). 6.The group has a polarized, us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society. 7. The leader is not accountable to any authorities (unlike, for example, teachers, military commanders, or ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream religious denominations). 8. The group teaches or implies that its supposedly exalted ends justify whatever means it deems necessary. This may result in members participating in behaviors or activities they would have considered reprehensible or unethical before joining the group (e.g., lying to family or friends, or collecting money for bogus charities). 9. The leadership induces feelings of shame and/or guilt in order to influence and control members. Often this is done through peer pressure and subtle forms of persuasion. 10. Subservience to the leader or group requires members to cut ties with family and friends, and radically alter the personal goals and activities they had before joining the group. 11. The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members. 12. The group is preoccupied with making money. 13. Members are expected to devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities. 14. Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members. 15. The most loyal members (the “true believers”) feel there can be no life outside the context of the group. They believe there is no other way to be, and often fear reprisals to themselves or others if they leave-or even consider leaving-the group. I see #1,#2,quite a bit of #5, #6, especially 7 , 8 , and oh boy #12 in one group in America - MAGA - so is it a cult? you tell me .

Weird but a lot of the criteria that you are using to describe these cults also applies to the most "officially recognized religions". And just because some governments and millions of people find them acceptable that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous, ridiculous, manipulative, money-grubbing and deceptive collectives of delusional control freaks. A "religion" is just a really popular and powerful cult. Oh, and I thought I saw Ma in the thumbnail. Interesting fact: a certain famous American folk musician (think long anti-war song about a diner) become a devotee of the Kashi Ashram in the late 80's/really 90s. He also later become a Republicant, causing his even more famous socialist folk-singing father to spin in his grave yet again. But yeah, my girlfriend at the time got sent to the Sebastian compound by her mother who was the bookkeeper for this musician. The letters I got while she was there were just bizarre. We thought it was just an harmless yoga and meditation group but I got concerned when I noticed all her friends had black boyfriends, their homes were all furnished and decorated exactly the same, they were all vegans, they went on the same retreats, and had the same guru. My girlfriend's demands for sex were at first flattering but then turned aggressive like she was possessed. I swear it felt like my soul was being drained. A succubus spirit. My friend said he felt the same draining energy at night, but blamed something else. It was like the psycho thriller "Get Out" because getting out was the worst part. She turned everyone against me, i even lost my best friend because she convinced everyone that I was the abusive one - an easy sell for rejected women. It was horrendous. At my lowest point I noticed a billboard message saying Christ Loves You. I'd seen it a thousand times before but then it meant much more this time. If my creator loves what he created with his own hands why should I care if I'm rejected by anyone? I wasted my whole adult life trying to be the "ladies man" now its time to rediscover the authentic me. To get 'Born Again' I guess. I am now a loner and I love it. I have never felt one second of loneliness, insecurity or need for approval since.

The answer is mormonism. As someone who married into a Mormon family and watched them get out of it, it was terrifying. We watched the church leaders defend a man who was arrested and found guilty of choking his infant daughter, because as they put it, he was more reliable in the eyes of the church then an unmarried woman. Not only that, they made him a high member of their temple, despite the proof of abuse and arrests. Yet the women cant do that. Including the younger women who were asked by the local bishop to consider going on a mission and marrying instead of school. Once the family was removed fully from the church, they sent the family church records to the father, who doesnt even have visitation rights, because he abused them and was arrested for it. He then sent members to the house week after week to try and get the kids to go with them even though they were asked not too. The bishop wouldn call and explain to us why we were wrong, even sending people over to read from the book with us. We had to have a high member of the local church board move the bishop to another neighborhood to get them to stop. We havent had issues since the bishop, who was caught on a group call telling the mother she was unfit because she was an unmarried woman and sinner, was moved. Not demoted or punished, just moved and kept in his spot of power. On top of all that, families having to pay a yearly fee to pray in their temples and being unable to even enter without paying, doesnt sound super God like to me. They even told our 16 year old she needed to pay them from her summer job. Yea. The issues surrounding the local wards here are surprisingly disgusting. Hopefully its just a local thing.

I wouldn't really consider Catholicism as a cult, but it can get very, very close to it. You can leave the Catholic church. In a cult, you don't leave unless you die. Same with mormonism, too. Scientology. That's a cult.

These cults isolate their members from their families because of the near inevitability of them being forced to leave the group, because any weird religion is viewed as a cult. If we didn't try to force people to be normal, maybe they wouldn't make isolation such a priority, and the real predatory groups might be easier to spot. We'll still have cults of course, and some will still isolate their members, but it would help us to discern between people who are being taken advantage of and situations where real crimes are being committed from extreme groups of people who just don't believe what main stream society does. They might be doing something irresponsible, unhealthy, maybe even dangerous, but if its a freely made choice, its their choice. Some people choose to reject modern technology as part of their religion. I have heard random people calling the amish a cult and others describing specific amish communities as cults, but for the most part, we all accept them as just different from us. If a group of people want to reject materialism and live as homeless people, you don't have to encourage it, just don't forcefully stop them. If there's real fraud, coersion, force, blackmail, rape, abuse, assault, etc going on which does happen in some cults, this should be addressed, but everybody else should be left alone.

The problem is the video should have defined what they are using as the definition of a cult is at the start of the video. There are various definitions out there but most are pretty similar. Like you say, no real definition says just that "I think they're weird" or "I am an atheist and think all religions are cults". Pretty much one of the only traits Mojo did mention was isolating members. But, true, what about people escaping from abusive upbringings who are finally leaving toxic relationships behind? So easy for the abusers to try gaslighting their victim claiming their new friends/community is a cult to force them to return. Definitely needed a better definition.

But I do think the Amish are a cult due to how they shun those who choose to leave, how they abuse children and animals, how to often force young women to marry those they didn't choose or want, how the leader of many churches demands total obedience and control over how people live.

For those of you watching and want to know how many cults and cultists are in Japan, it's a fucking LOT on both accounts. I've lived here for going on six years and I've lived in a few prefectures. There's a town in Gunma prefecture called Ota that's like half cultists. I'm not entirely sure why, but these kind of insane cults are just commonplace here. Alef is almost a sort of legend these days, but Happy Science is EVERYWHERE and there's another cult that's pretty big, though I don't know the name. Much like Aum though, they're huge and they have some amount of political influence. They worship Mt. Fuji as their god. In towns like Ota, you can even find young children doing their part by handing out fliers for the cult. They asked me to get on their bus once to go pray to the mountain but I nope'd right the fuck out.
