Just bought some shrimp and pearlweed from you for the second time today the last time was 3 or 4 years ago, like you the longer I am in the hobby the less equipment and maintenance I need and the more I rely on the ecosystem created in the tank to do the maintenance.

If you can get sand from your yard that would be the best and cheapest route. For everyone who does not live on a dried-up ocean bottom there is still Home Depot or any of the other home stores. There is never a reason to even come close to the dollar amounts you were throwing out. I hit Home Depot every week and check the broken bag pallet. They all have one during the spring and summer seasons. Most stores are half price. Some are fifty cent bags. I have never paid more than $2.50 for a 50# bag of sand. If you insist on being fancy or want a bigger grain the pool store has real nice gold sand that is a bigger granule for $10/50#. While you are at Home Depot they have the same deal on gravel and stone. I clean up everything for them.
