I'm in the middle of renovating 150-year-old house with a lot of plaster work to do. I took notes while watching, thank you so much. The biggest takeaway from this video for me was that you guys went and filled holes and patched stuff on walls that weren't part of the job. It speaks volumes to the professionalism and care that is taken and lets me know that this is a guy worth watching. Thanks!

Excellent! I enjoyed seeing Masters at work with pride, integrity, and experience. I watched Dad do this for years. Your work ethic and attitude brought back long-forgotten memories. Any comments you receive criticizing your work shows a lack of experience and a need to improve skill level. Once a crack showed up in a chimney, he fixed it, it cracked again, the war was on. If he was here now, I'd tease him asking 'who won the war?' Of course, knowing he figured it out. Wear the mask, lung cancer took him away. I miss him. I appreciate the Care you show in your work, I can't find it these days and I know your clients are happy for you to be a contractor who is detail-oriented.Come to FL anytime, I'm sure to have a few things to keep you busy. Thanks for the memories.

Great video. I have a home build 1890. The livingroom (30 x 20) a 4 x 8 section had water dammage. Received quotes from $2000 to $5000 (back in 2005) to either repair the section of sheetrock the entire ceiling. Having gone to an old bar I noticed their tin ceiling. So I did the entire ceiling in tin with a center medallion.primer painted and painted to make the ceiling look 100 years old. Total cost was say $600.

Hello - I just sat here and watched the whole video because you work with both plaster and drywall. That was a lot of work, and the repairs you did looked great to me. My house has all plaster walls and ceilings, but the East interior walls were replaced with drywall 20 years ago. The wall joint in the NE corner of my house is no longer solid because of poor workmanship. There's crumbling plaster and gaps on the plaster section where it's supposed to connect to drywall section. They just slapped paper tape in the corner joint without any type of compound underneath and put a skim coat on top. Would I be able to just use the Durabond 90 to fill the failed & empty plaster sections (after cleaning out failed material) of the corner from ceiling to floor, and skim that over to the drywall portion with Durabond 90 over that section too? It's not a large area surface wise; just the corner from ceiling to floor. Would you recommend I use FibaFuse (or something else; steel bead?) for that inside corner and skim another layer of Durabond 90 over the top of the tape? More than one coat of Durabond? Then after adequate dry time, finish with a coat of joint compound? You know how you were smooshing the Durabond 90 into gaps - what if you put Durabond into a ziplock bag (or an icing bag) and cut off tip and squeezed it into the joint like cake icing? That would get a lot more material into the joint and then you can skim over easier. Thanks for any advice you can give me. I've been scouring KZfaq for answers.

Hi Liz, glad you found us! 1. Remove the loose material. 2. Apply a PVA adhesive like plaster or cement bonding adhesive. The cement bonding adhesive may be easier to find and works great. 3. 'Shmoosh' in Durabond 90. I don't think a piping bag will work because the Durabond shouldn't be that loose. 4. Once all is hard, re-tape with drywall tape and regular drywall compound - doesn't matter what type or brand. For extra security, you can brush on another coat of PVA adhesive before you start taping, however the Durabond you applied is the real fix. 5. Sand, prime, and then paint. Thanks for watching! Just watched all your videos over the last couple days. Nice and thorough. I appreciate that the work you do combines drywall and plaster repairs, side by side, as there's a lot of that in my house. In one of the video you mentioned a bit for chasing cracks (may have been this one, but I didn't watch in order so not sure). What bit were you referring to? I have cracks on every single wall and ceiling in my house and have been using a Rotozip with a tile bit to cut thru the lime coat and finishing it up with a knife. Just wondering if there's a better solution. Hope to see more from you.
@plasterdrywallbyshaynebeda4503

Hi Maggie Dog, that's a loaded question. The first thing you need to determine is if your plaster is 'plaster over wood lath', or 'plaster over plaster board' - which is essentially 'plaster over drywall'. It sounds like you have 'plaster over plaster board'. If this is the case, another method is to NOT chase the cracks, but instead apply cement or plaster bonding adhesive, tape with Fibafuse, using Durabond 90 Type Setting Compound - and then float out your taped joints. Or, you could simply drywall over top of the surface. Or, you can chase the cracks. I only use a utility knife, making the 'V' large enough to get a significant amount of material in the crack. And then a thorough application of bonding adhesive, and then Durabond 90 Type Setting Compound, and then float as normal to 'feather' the edges with drywall compound. Using a Rotozip sound extremely dusty. Hope you're wearing a mask! Send me a picture if you like - shayne@bedals.com Thanks for watching!

@@plasterdrywallbyshaynebeda4503 Thanks for replying. Actually, the house is plaster and lath. There are just some places where a wall was added or replaced, a ceiling replaced or covered, etc, that are drywall. All the upstairs ceilings have damage from a leaky roof, followed by a not so good roofing contractor. I have been using pretty much the same method as you do in your videos to repair them, but using Structolite and Diamond instead of Durabond. Is there a reason to use Durabond rather than Structo? As for the dust, yeah, there's a lot. But I am only doing a room at a time, sealing it off, running a HEPA filter and wearing a mask. I only use the Zip on hairline cracks because the lime is so hard it's nearly impenetrable, there are dozens of them in each room, and I have limited time one weekends to do this. I just cut thru the lime then I can knife the rest out easily. I really thought I heard you mention using a bit for chasing the cracks, but I guess I was mistaken. Regardless, really appreciate the reply and the content. I'll email you a couple pictures shortly.

Just curious about the primer coat you used... the Promar 200. Was that a specific primer, primer/sealer or just flat latex paint? If the latter, was it used in deference to the others because it has some breathability to let any possible residual moisture out from the quick repair schedule? You usually have an advantageous reason for using specific products, but you didn't elaborate on this one. Perhaps it is nothing except being sufficient for the task, but thought I would inquire. I like your channel and you do great work. That ceiling looks beautiful, bet the customers were very happy!

Great video! I have learned so much from your videos sir! A plaster section covering the brick party wall in my unit seems to have broke off and separated from the brick. I removed the loose section and I am planning to use plaster again to restore the original feel of the apt. Another challenge would be to ensure the new plaster section is flush with the old section! Any recommendations on what the best approach would be greatly appreciated.

@plasterdrywallbyshaynebeda4503

Hi Antoinea, first step is to clean the exposed brick by brushing and vacuuming. After that, apply a liberal amount of plaster/cement bonding adhesive - not only to the brick, but to the broken edges of the existing plaster. Structolite is an excellent plaster for a project like yours. Plasters are very sloppy. Protect your flooring well. Trowel in the Structolite, and then use some sort of straight edge large enough to go from one side of the repair to the other. We use straight edges like, Featherlites, Darbies, Slickers... Once the material is in and smooth, cover it with plastic for a few hours. It needs to convert to cement, and that take time being wet. If it dries too quickly, you may get 'dry-out' which means the plaster did not convert to cement and will be weak. Once the repair is as hard as a sidewalk, you are ready to coat it with anything you like. If you're not a professional, I would recommend drywall compound. It is forgiving and sandable. I hope this helps, Shayne

@@antoinea.jaoude4504 depends on the size of the repair. Up to 9 square feet, I would just use on coat. Larger than that, I would put a scratch coat, brown coat, and then finish coat of what ever material you want to use.

We just flooded in Fort Lauderdale. It’s a 1953 house with “plaster” drywall. Or whatever the right term is. I got the water out with a sump pump, it was 4” and not above baseboards. We’re drying it now (no power for 48hours) but it’s been running for a few days. Still pretty wet. Heartbroken as we bought it late last year and have been doing so many renovations. My question is IF we can’t save the walls and forced to do a flood cut how do you attach drywall that’s thinner to the plaster that’s thicker? I can’t watch 45min worth as I have spotty service still, sorry if it’s in the video. Can you still buy the plaster like already in the house? What’s the best thing to do here?
@plasterdrywallbyshaynebeda4503

Hi Adrian, You'll need some professional drying equipment - air movers and dehumidifiers. You'll never get it dry with consumer equipment. If you have to cut the walls up 24", remember to cut them 25" up from the floor. This way you can use a sheet of drywall halved at 24" to fit with little waist. If you're walls are 3/4" plaster for example, and your drywall is 1/2", you'll need to add 1/4" strapping to your cut areas to bring the board out to 3/4". I would use a hybrid method of drywall, adhesive, and Durabond 90 to tie the repair into your existing plaster. Adhesive it the magic potion that will make your life easier. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching, Shayne

Ok Mr. Structolite, please explain how your real plaster process is superior in a situation like this? Yes, structolite could have been keyed into the existing wood lath as a scratch coat, but you’d be doing that on old lath secured with rusty nails, whereas this method is far superior, I’ve been doing this same method for over 20 years, except I use construction adhesive and I still apply fibafuse or at least fiberglass tape along the seam of the old plaster and newly installed gypsum board/drywall.
