Thank you so much for this guide about bee waterers. Unfortunately due to a high amount of insecticide spraying in my area, it is becoming less frequent to see bees. So I have decided why not make them something nice and this video is a life saver. Thanks for making it easy and understandable for viewers like me.

I have noticed that my bees prefer old water which the drink through moss & the edges of muddy pools rather than fresh clean water. They especially avoided the municipal water containing chloride, flouride etc. Maybe we should too :)

These light weight clay balls seemed perfect to help my bees stay afloat to drink water without falling in. Unfortunately they were more of a death trap. Instead they can’t hold on and struggled as the balls spun-picture trying to stand on rolling logs. I’m going back to my wine corks cut in half.

Thank you SO much, I just subscribed, been rescuing bees that fell into our water barrels so now know how to take care of that. I'll attach a station to the water barrels which they already know how to find

Would you need to wash out the clay pebbles regularly? What tips do you have to maintain the drink stations?

It's pretty low maintenance, if you water your plants you can flush this with new water, and if it fills up noticably with leaves and dust, remove that stuff. But generally, if the bees are using it, its good to go!

I've been considering making a bee bath ( Seriously? More like a drinking station. ) but was concerned about keeping the water level at a constant hight. Those floating clay ball's answered the question! What about pumice? I'll be searching after this comment but which would be more nutritional? This earned a subscription!

Somebody in a comment above said she saw bees rolling off of the clay balls and drowning! I am not going to use those.

Those are expanded clay pebbles, "hydroton" and they can be found online. They can also be found at many garden stores, especially if the store sells hydroponic growing equipment.

Should the water be place in a sunny or shade location?

How do you keep mosquitoes from nesting in the water?

Hi Nicolas, that is a great question. In general changing the water regularly would disrupt the mosquito's ability to reproduce in it and keep it fresh.

I lost 20 bees this week because they're drowning in my dog water bowl. I just made one and will move their bowl into a corner and put this one out where they are used to going. They are smart because they are flying around looking for the dog bowls!
