This video is a step by step how-to installation of a water/fuel separator and filter. With poor quality gas, ethanol, and water in fuel becoming more and more common, this $50-$60 investment is a must have on every boat. THe installation is quick and easy, and it can be placed inside of the boat our mounted outside on the back of your railings if need be. I’ve used these for years! Here’s a tip. Drain it is into a clear jar ever time before you go. The reason you drain it every time before you go is because if it has water already in the filter it’s just going push water into your engine. The reason you pour the gas from the filter into a clear jar is because once it sits the water and gas will separate and you can see how much water is in the gas the store your getting it form has in their tanks.

Totally get that method, and to do so every trip I would 100% recommend the type of filter with the twist drain on the bottom, and it has a clear window to check for water or debris! I change them once a season, or check it first if there’s an engine issue to test the fuel for water!

Happy to help, and thanks for watching! It could certainly be that you have some water in your fuel (test what comes out of the old filter), or it could need the carburetors cleaned too as those tiny openings in the low speed jets can get gunked up over time to where it'll run at higher speeds but struggle to idle.

Thanks! Unfortunately we haven't tackled the center toon fuel cell installation. The center logs with fuel cell spaces we've installed are always missing the actual fuel cell! And it seems that they're typically custom made for manufacturers dimensions so not easy to find a replacement. Only downfall for a center log fuel cell (and transom integrated for standard pontoon) is getting access to work on them or replace compared to an above deck tank.

Happy to help. Most factory boats come with a water/fuel filter kit just like this…and if not they definitely should!! All of our new fuel system installs, even if it’s just a 6 gallon red can, get one. The nice thing about the filter is that you can test a sample from it in a clear bottle easily to diagnose things like that. Water in gas happens, even if running marina gas or recreational fuel. Once in a while there’s just a bad batch!

i just purchased a pontoon, it has a 90 hp Mercury,,, 4 stroke, im not sure if a fuel seperator will work on a 4 stroke, i believe there are 2 fuel pumps on the engine, not sure of that though, will a seperator work, or Not.. i was going to put one on, but im not sure that it will ever prime, thanks
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
It will absolutely work on a four stroke!! If it’s the newer 90 Mercury it calls for no primer bulb. The easiest way to get fuel through the system is to put a primer bulb at the end nearest the motor and get fuel pulled through the entire system to start, then hook the fuel line back up to the motor, and away you go. The other option is to do a key on cycle 10-15 times where you hear the fuel pump turn on and prime. Eventually that will fill the system and it will maintain the prime over time. I just installed a new 150 Mercury with a water fuel separator. I’ll prime some fuel to the motor and then hook it up and it’ll be ready to run. Let it idle a good long while when you first run it with the separator in to let it build that vacuum. It might idle a little rough here and there, but it’ll smooth out quickly as it gets the fuel flowing.

Hey D Damion! Marine water/fuel separators are universal (everything I've come across!). You'll just need to pick a kit to start with so you have the housing. Then each year you can replace the filter with whatever brand you'd like. We love the Tohatsu option because of the affordability and durability. There are even filter options that have clear bottoms to see if water is settling and to drain/sample fuel!

Question, Is it okay to use brass fitting on aluminum housing?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Ай бұрын
I'm not a metallurgist...but from what I've seen it shouldn't cause any trouble. The manufacturers of these filters ship brass fittings with the cast aluminum housings so I assume they think it'll be okay. Everything we do is 100% freshwater up here in Michigan so we don't get the extreme reactions and corrosion issues. It may be different in saltwater or marinas where there's high electrolysis.

I have a transom fuel tank, so does it matter how high it should be mounted.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
I would go for a lower mount IF POSSIBLE. However, some height increase will help prevent fuel flow when changing the filter. A mechanic explained it to me like this: the flow of fuel has to go straight up the pick up, and that’s never a problem. Adding some vertical climb isn’t going to be an issue if there are no kinks or pinches in the hose. Fuel pumps are stronger than we think.

I would only install the separators that have the viewing glass then you know for sure your filter is still working and not full, with the filter in this video it could be full of water allowing water to get to your motor making this device a crapshoot.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 9 ай бұрын
I totally get that, and those viewing glass styles are great!! However, if checked seasonally it’s unlikely that there will be that much water in the fuel to where it could fill unless there’s a bigger problem, and at that point it might be too late even with the viewing option.

I’ve mounted most of them just above the fuel tank and had zero issues, including my tritoon with the 200hp. If able to keep it level or lower it may be less work on the fuel pump, but once a good prime is started it shouldn’t be much effort at all for the motor!!

As long as your filter is screwed in tight and your hose fittings are snugged down with clamps it can get wet. I haven’t had any trouble mounting them above the tank a foot or so. Otherwise you could fabricate a bracket to sit just above the transom without going up high to a rail.

@@FlyingPaintMonkey I've never had an issue mounting a filter above the tank on a pontoon. I agree that it would be best to have it below to allow gravity to help, but hasn't been a problem for me. And the mechanics at the local marina have told me over and over that the new EFI motors can pull fuel no problem as they have multiple fuel pumps in the fuel system. Also, Merc doesn't mind a water/fuel separator at all. In fact I imagine they'd promote the use of them to remove potential issues. Heck, Tohatsu used to only validate warranty if there was one installed with a new motor!!! Mercury does not call for a primer bulb for their 75 hp and up. They are trying to avoid any fuel flow issues or places for loss of vacuum. You could try mounting your filter lower to see if that helps. Or remove your primer bulb if you have that in addition to the filter.
