Before we even start discussing what you pump to certain handlines or debating fog tip and smooth bore nozzles, we have to understand some basic functions and anatomy of the pumps we’re utilizing.
Remember, we started at the hydrant. Then we talked about how to determine what a 5” or 3” supply line can give you in terms of volume. Today we’re talking about that volume as it enters our pumps through various intakes. So before we talk about water leaving our apparatus, we need to understand how water enters it
If there was ever a topic that could draw blank stares from Rookie Firefighter's it's got to be the whole concept of hooking two engines together "intake-to-intake." I get it though. This concept and when it's appropriate took me a while to grasp. It wasn't until someone broke it down into a very simple diagram (like the one in this video) that it all started to click and I understood WHY water passed through (and back out of) my intakes unaffected by the throttle.
So, hopefully the light bulb will turn on for someone here... but even better, next time you're at a fire and someone tells you dump your take to the attack engine, won't make the Rookie Mistake of hooking up intake to intake. WHY? Because you now understand the WHY behind the intake manifold. Intake to intake is used for something else, but we'll get to that in another video down the road.

Hey brother, Just want to say thanks for making this a channel and playlist. I am a career firefighter and it seems like 1 month after a pump class these concepts start trickling away one by one. This is a super helpful way to keep it fresh in my head. Praying this channel grows and helps future generations of guys like me.
