030 - Water Pollution
In this video Paul Andersen explains how water quality can be degraded by pollutants. Wastewater is the main source of water pollution and can be measure using the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand). Dead zones, cultural eutrophication, disease, and other pollutants are included. A basic description of sewage treatment, septic systems, and water purification is also included.

wouldn't it be possible to take advantage of the nitrification / nitrification ( alga bloom ) by harvesting alga and press it into pellets - as poultry feed / OR , plant kelb forests ( other see weed ) at our coast line - and also use it as animal feed , or fertilizer on our farms ?
@elleszabo8655
@elleszabo8655 7 жыл бұрын
Actually some are taking advantage of algae to create biofuels. Even though I'm not sure if you could use algae growing in conditions like eutrophic oceans, there are algae farms that create a source of energy. Algae are very inexpensive to cultivate, and the combustion of the resulting biofuel releases no net carbon dioxide.

Dear sir, I didn't understand the last point i.e. "The big problem with this is that we are removing the water upstream and dropping sewer downstream but then there is going to be another city just down the way." Please elucidate!

I always wonder, how are all the pharmaceutical drugs affecting water and can oxygen and bacteria dissolve them?
@elleszabo8655
@elleszabo8655 7 жыл бұрын
The main effect of pharmaceutical drugs is that they are endocrine disruptors. That means that the natural sex hormones in organisms such as frogs get out of balance. Males can develop female anatomy and therefore be unable to reproduce. Pharmaceuticals don't affect humans as much since our hormone levels require more to disrupt our endocrine system, but they do affect small animals.

Paul, I don't understand why the O2 increases in polluted water (healthy = 1mg/L vs. EU polluted = 600mg/L) if the bacteria require and is using oxygen thus depleting it from water? Example - eutrophication is oxygen depletion from bacteria consuming dead algae
@elleszabo8655
@elleszabo8655 7 жыл бұрын
This comment is very old and I'm not paul, but to answer your question, the oxygen doesn't increase. The oxygen *demand* increases. When he's talking about the measure of BOD increasing, he's describing the amount of oxygen that the water's organisms require. A high number results in less oxygen available in the water after the decomposition process.
