The water pressure regulating valve is unable to maintain the set point of 50 psi and drops to 35 psi when consumption is increased

As you may have already found out, but I'll mention it in case someone else finds this video as I did. There is a chart available that shows a plot of the pressure drop based on the flow (GPM), so for example a 3/4" valve set at 60psi when water is off and, for example, 80psi upstream, may drop down to 40psi. You may need to install a much larger valve to get a more consistent pressure at your maximum flow rate. All of these type valves have that characteristic.

@@ncvman The valves come with charts that show pressure in relation to flow. The only way to know the amount of pressure at a given flow rate is to look at the charts.

Same here. My water pressure is no where near the neighbors' water pressures. Take the whole day to finish watering my lawn. It is set to maximum right now. Running 2-3 faucets and water will just drip out. I'm going to service it, but look like it is just junk out of the box. My house is new.

I just serviced it last week and it is working better than ever before. There were a lot of small debris and chlorine buildup in there. You need to flush them out of the input pipe as well (so much more in there, as they can't go through the strainer). I would service it every few years and then replace it after 10-20 years. The design of the valve is way too simple to go wrong, but the rubber seal rings, diaphragm do wear out over time.

The ZURN600XL has a internal O ring leak and is a design defect. the O ring allows high pressure water to pass the O ring and pressureize the low pressure closed side, all these valves are all deficit, they are a inmitation of a Watts regulator.

My Zurn NR3XL is 15 years old Just recently water flow slows to a dribble for 5 seconds then comes back normal flow. Water gauge shows 120Lbs all faucets off. If I turn on one faucet pressure drops to 62Lbs where it should be. I suspect a rubber gasket crack. A rebuild kit is $90 a whole new unit is $70. I plan on just swapping guts from new to old housing, since I won't have to cut 3/4 galvi pipe and re fit the new body.

I have a new construction house, major pressure problems after about 6 years. I was clueless on all of this and had a plumber come out. He replaced this with the same prv and then my pressure was fine. But I kept the old prv and really can't find the problem with it. Like you: I didn't ever see any obvious debris/dirt in any of it. He seemed to adjust my old valve and showed me that pressure was not changing. He might have been playing some trickery with me while having me buy a replacement, and paying him more than the 120 it cost at the time.

I have finished exhaustive flow testing on this same unit. (I don't know how many hundreds of gallons of water I wasted today.) It works fine if one is willing not to control the pressure but that's not the idea, is it. At 130 psi static I'm getting at least 25 gpm. At 50 psi static it settles around 0.6 gpm with dynamic psi less than 10. I took it apart and lubed up the O-rings. Everything looks clean. The only improvement is the awful sound it used to make at 50 psi. It is now quiet but still doesn't work. My conclusion is the cartridge assembly is not traveling as freely as it should. I wonder if the repair kit will somehow fix it.

In my case, the problem of low pressure was solved by replacing this PRV with a bigger size allowing for higher flow rate with lower pressure drop. Just a quarter inch upgrade was enough. Thanks for sharing your experience.

@@akhaqan My flow tests and the specs indicate the 3/4 inch should be adequate for my needs. Maybe the one inch is just a better valve. I've ordered a replacement Watts. In the mean time I'm going to try some emery cloth on the valve body.

@@jonathanhal Great. I have found through experience that its always better to oversize slightly especially when you have the option of laying new plumbing, the chances of hearing water flow in pipes reduces dramatically, 3/4" vs 1". For energy efficiency, hot water pipes need to be as small diameter as possible. That's a whole subject onto itself on how to design for energy efficiency.

PRVs don't sustain pressure when water outlets in the house are opened. If you open 5-6 spigots and faucets all over the house of course the pressure will drop. You expect a prv will magically sustain the pressure when you do you open valves. Even with no prv,, pressure drops when multiple water valves in the house are opened. Your post causes confusion for others. Please don't post ill-conceived expectations as wisdom.
@akhaqan
@akhaqan 4 ай бұрын
Thanks. It seems you don't have an understanding of how a PRV works or how pipe sizing is done to keep pressure drop to an optimum level, this is the basics of hydraulics & hydrostatics. Pressure drop increases with increased flow rate, to counter that, pipe diameter is increased with certain design assumptions e.g. 4 faucets of 1.5 gpm will be open at the same time, so the pipe diameter has to be certain size to ensure that each faucet maintains 1.5 gpm and the main pipe can sustain 6 gpm. Now coming to PRV, Pressure Regulating Valve, it's main job is to control the pressure downstream of the valve at a set point at certain design basis. The valve varies its opening based on demand. There is pressure drop that follows a curve on a graph but it is not significant within design limits, example given above. If the pressure and flow rate drop is significant, the first and obvious thing to look at is the PRV assuming the piping of the entire house is the right size. If your PRV is smaller in diameter, it will cause choke flow, hence it needs to be of the right size. So to recap: an adequately sized PRV will sustain downstream flow & pressure by varying its opening, that is the sole purpose of a PRV since the utility supplied water is over 80 psi and the PRV drops it to around 40 or so.

@@akhaqan I am installing a 3/4 in nr3xl. So your story makes me wonder. I detected the whole story was not in the video. Now you are saying the 3/4 you had originally malfunctioned. I think you get benefits from going up to 1 inch but maybe I won't need that. Also, you just used reducers to connect the 1" prv to your 3/4" pipes? We'll see how my install goes.
