This Ford Edge did not have the codes such as P0014/P0016/P0017 or P0019 due to the customer had just gone into a shop for their regular oil and filter service, when the service shop noticed the oil was mixed with coolant "Milk Shake" with a muddy color. They felt it might be a blown head gasket or cracked head and referred them elsewares. We took the steps to perform the needed testing to determine the actual cause, evaluated with the information we had the best course of action and gave the customer some options . Since the motor did run well and had not yet even started setting codes we felt after locating the water pump leak it would be ok to replace the water pump and it's associated parts and gaskets, coolant,oil and filter

My wife’s 2011 edge water pump failed, dumped about a gallon in the oil. Shop told me it’s probably the head gasket and it will be better off spending $4500 on replacement engine. This engine showed no signs of a blown gasket. I tore it down to the water pump just to see if it’s was the pump and it was. I only replaced the pump and the plugs. Flushed the oil 3 times and been running smooth ever since. I believe this issue can easily be caught in between regular oil changes or if you all of a sudden have power loss. Just simply shut it down early.

Hi Steven, I agree with the detailed vehicle inspection reports at each 5000 to 7500 miles oil and filter service being the key to catching this kind of stuff early. Yes, we have saved many of motor that had already been condemned at another shop not realizing what they were looking at. It is far less then the cost of a motor in both dollars and time. Thanks for posting a great response.

I had this engine in my 2008 Ford Taurus and it was a dream. I got rid of the car at 302000 miles and it never burnt a court of oil. I think a lot of the problem comes down to to frequent oil changes and not using the Orange coolant. That car had the gold coolant. I also never beat the car.

Wow to design an engine with an water pump driven by the timing chain. Who the fuck thought to design such an engine. Most water pumps are driven by the fan belt. This way they are easy to replace, no need to purchase expensive tools to lock the camshafts or the timing belt. A design that should make people not buy FORD products at all.

Hi CrIag, I've changed a number of water pumps in my day, but this one takes the cake and eats it too. You just saved me from buying a used 2009 Ford Edge. It pays to do your research. I'm a backyard auto DIY. We have lost sight of the principle, form follows function. After seeing this, my 2005 Trailblazer is looking better and better. It sickens me how manufacturers in general have lost their ethical code, and traded them for The $. Buyer beware and do your homework. Water pumps go, It's the nature of the beast. I installed my own for $50.00. At a service station $250 - $300, which is reasonable. But this repair will cost big $$$.

Just wanna say thanks for this video. Ford wanted to replace the engine on my mom's edge after the water pump gave out which would have cost $8,000 and I ended up repairing the water pump and its been about a year since I did it and I watched this vid and it helped a lot. Still running strong, absolutely no problems or abnormal engine noise or codes. Now the a/c condenser is leaking somehow and its starting to get hot here in the south. On to replace it, Cheers!

Oh cool, You make a great point. We have had some that were told they needed a motor also but we were still able to just replace the pump and chain stuff . Still a big investment for a water pump job but way less than a motor. I have seen the AC condensers leak along the edges at the seams, double check the electric radiator fans are working ok. If these run slow it will make the AC pressure run higher then they should at slow speeds and put excess pressure on the AC system.. Glad we could help and thanks for the great feedback. I wish we could get our google profile to link to these videos. :)

Hi Nate, At 1.59 we mention we will run the block test while test are being run. This one did pass the block test and after repairs was off and running again. Even without a motor there will be a substantial investment of over $2000.00 to do this correctly. While the front of the engine is apart and with any kind of mileage were highly recommended replacing the timing chain guides, tensioner, new coolant, two oil and filter services (if the motor went to a "milkshake" of coolant and oil mixing) we have also seen the VCT solenoids get sludge stuck n the valve/s and have to come apart to clean them out . But to your original question if any overheating is suspected or reported the block test should be performed. Thanks for asking a great question Nate.

Might as well......They made this thing impossible to do what used to be an easy repair. I had a 1992 S-10 Blazer. You could replace just about anything in your driveway with a couple of friends. As far as this ridiculous edge water pump placement/design goes there is another that beats this in the crazy design department. It isn't JUST a bad water pump design, the problem is having the water located inside the engine where, if it fails, antifreeze/water gets in the engine oil. That has to be the most stupid design I've seen from Ford. All waters should be located external to the engine.

I will not buy a car with a chain driven water pump ever. A belt driven water pump will not contaminate the oil when it goes south. Ideally I like to see the water pump on the outside of the engine, driven by the serpentine belt. The reality is many engines have timing belt driven water pumps, but at least the oil is generally safe when they fail.

@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 3 жыл бұрын
Joseph you are asking a really good question. So the milkiness of the oil indicates that there is mixing of the engine coolant in with the motor oil. If it's not overheating not blowing steam at the tailpipe and there's no engine noise and it has not failed a cylinder block test then there's a good chance it'll survive. But your mechanic is being honest with you that you can never know for sure as only time will tell unless you take the whole thing apart to actually look at everything and if you do that you might as well rebuild or replace the motor. With all that said and your guy may have already done this but see if it has an oil cooler on it that would let the engine oil and engine coolant be very close to one another. I have seen numerous different vehicles have failed oil coolers that were allowing them to mix the oil and coolant at that location and not necessarily require a cylinder head or heads to be removed inspected and or replaced. It's a big decision and I wish I could help you more but when you have this mixing there is definitely a risk that bearing damage could have been done that is not yet evident. Good luck and thanks for asking a wonderful question.

@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care Жыл бұрын
Good Morning Juan, That is one I have not seen before, The hole as you know leads to the weep hole area of the water pump and the area around it is well protected from the crank case area of non pressurized oil. I suggest if you have not yet done so is to clean the area very well. Then add oil dye and run the engine and even drive the car over hours or days as needed to keep watch in the area of the hole to get a better idea of where the oil is coming from. It is possible it could be leaking from above or next to the hole area and leaking back into the hole. The valve covers, intake and heads are all possibilities that need to be look at first. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation vale) could be restricted or excessive engine blow by and could be causing to high of crank case pressures and pushing oil out from places it normally would not. So ,I would do some testing first before replacing a lot of parts and doing a lot of extra labor work that may not be needed. Great question and I will ask around in the shop to see if anyone else has seen this.

WATER PUMP FAILURE - BLOWN ENGINE: I have a 2010 Edge - I drive about 5K a year these days. A couple of months ago the water pump failed at 65K in my Edge and I am having to replace the motor now. (really poor design by Ford) I didn't get any warning at the time of failure, water temp went high and damage was done! I pulled over at the time it happened and called the tow truck but the damage was already done. No "check engine" or other warning lights? Can you recommend an "aftermarket alarm" or a "coolant level" alarm or something I can add to my Edge to try to catch this next time before the motor is shot?
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffery, Sorry to hear about the Edge. I have not been asked this before but in theory it would be possible to make and install a temperature sensor that will turn on a waring light that could be installed on the dash to light up when it got to certain temperature. The one below is an example made by longacre-racing and sold hat summit. THis kit trips at 230 degrees and that is normal operating temperature for many of today's vehicles. So to use this kit you would also have to use a resistor to change the vale to something like 245 or your light would alsoways be coming on. www.summitracing.com/parts/lng-40150?seid=srese1&cm_mmc=pla-google

Joe jones you make a great point!. There are other engines out there for different makes that solve the clearance problem by mounting accessories at the sides or even the other end of the motor and drive them off the camshafts. Cadillac ran their water pump off the front cam for years and it sat just over the transmission. It did require a special socket but only took a few hours to replace. When engineers are developing and combining body and powertrains systems this should be high on their list. Thanks for posting.

The weep hole leaking behind your water pump does not go into your oil it goes along and drops down another hole that drops down between your engine and transmission it does not go in your oil
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 3 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Mike and thanks for the clarification. You are correct that the weep hole does leak to the outside. The seal on the water pump shaft that is driven by the timing chain is how the water/coolant gets into the oil and crankcase of the engine. The weep hole is an early warning that the seal between the impeller and front hub of the water pump has failed and will allow coolant/water to travel down the water pump shaft and what does not go out the weep hole will move on and out the hub that is driven by the timing chain and place coolant/water into the crankcase and mix the oil and coolant together and make that milky looking oil that if left unchecked can cause a lack of lubrication for the engines internally lubricated components. Thus causing early failure of the engine. Thanks again for posting.

Great question Chris, ask the seller for a copy of the vehicle history service records. See what's been done and also have the vehicle inspected by a shop you trust. They may offer a pre-purchase inspection. If the pump has been done recently and everything else checks out you're probably good to go but if not it could be something to negotiate the price over. I think I'll use vehicles have the potential to be an issue after you purchase them people don't generally sell their current vehicles because they're in perfect condition it's no uncommon for a new owner to have to invest in their new purchase to make it perfect for the way they are going to use it. I hope it all works out have a great weekend.

Shame! That one little engineering fuckup mess these engines. Who's freaking idea was that? To put a water pump inside the engine. Perhaps, they were counting on the customer to bring to them to have it fixed. People, when buying car like these check that you don't get stuck with such engine. My son bought a 2012 Mazda three years ago. Great little car. It broke down half way down to NJ from Philadelphia. He had to tow it back to the station. It's been there for about six months. I thought it was a rotary engine. So, I didn't bother fix it for him. Just the other day, I did some research and it's a piston engine. And, he says it starts. So, it mean the engine can be fix. So how do I quickly notice the leak and turn off the car, the liquid will not damage the engine? I rode slowly for 3 km. I noticed the fan working. I stopped and didn't drive the car anymore. Today the mechanic will replace the pump and timing belt. I look at the oil dipstick and see a lot of fluid in the engine. I think 2-3 liters.
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care Жыл бұрын
Good morning, The only way to really notice is to check all the fluids each day for any that are getting low, or if fluids are seen under the engine area and regular service inspections by a mechanic. If the coolant "liquid" does not mix with the oil and the engine is not overheated things should turn out ok. If the coolant has mixed with the oil and has been operated for any length of time there could be damage done to the moving parts on the internal engine. If the engine was not making any new sounds then before it may have been discovered in time. The mechanic should be able to let you know what they found while replacing the water pump and timing chain. Good luck and I hope it all goes well.

Noticed the AC compressor is still on the engine. Why didn't you take it off to avoid opening the AC system?
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 4 жыл бұрын
Good Morning 75hdfxe, Great question, With the compressor on the lower left up under the alternator there is no room to unbolt it and lift it up out of the way while still keeping a sealed system. The engine and radiators and fans are just too close to one another. You may be able to remove the alternator and then try and lift it but the time required to do this takes longer than evacuating the system and capping off lines with plastic and zip ties to keep dirt and as much moisture out of the system as possible, while doing the repairs. When we go back together the AC lines get new seals and the system gets evacuated for at least on hour. It really comes down to time. If a person did not have an AC machine then it may be worth it to pull everything necessary around the compressor to not break open the system. Fantastic question and I thank you for asking it. Also on a side note I remember one of these we did the client mentioning to us on a two day follow up and thank you call that the AC seemed colder than it had been and asked, had we fixed something in that system while it was apart. We surmised the AC system had probbly been low on freeon and when we did the evacuation and recharge with the correct weight of R134A it probbly just put it back at the full mark and thus the AC was colder.

Great question. You could probbly check around with the parts stores in your area and see if any of them has this in their rental tool inventory. Pricing is still about the same and depends on all what parts a client approves to replace while it is apart. Some only do the water pump and others that plan to keep the cars will generally have us replace all the moving parts, engine mounts and other wear items. Last one we did had almost 200K on it and the client has us even replace the radiator every signal coolant hose along with the other items. that bill invoice was over $3000.00 or about 6 months worth of new car payments as she put it and did not want a new car bill for the next 5 years. He did not move the engine and when he finished the water pump, he lowered the car back down, making it easy to reinstall the engine. It was much easier to do the water pump replacement with the engine removed. He said total man hours to remove the engine and replace the water pump and the timing chains and reinstall the engine was about 12 hours. The cost of the repair was around 1500 dollars.

Would you ever recommend a water pump/Timing set job being done pre-emptively? My wife has a 2009 Ford Edge that is in beautiful shape with no rust what so ever and just a little over 100k miles. Oil changes have been every 3k miles or 6mon which ever comes first. She only puts 6-7k miles on per/year at most so buying a new car doesn't really make sense either. If spending $1500-2k now could keep her on the road to even 150,000 miles that would be another 7 years of driving at her current mileage rate! Just wondering your thoughts.

Good morning Greg, Really great question. The two best arguments for being proactive is 1. You can catch this before there is a chance of the coolant and the oil mixing that can result in a condition that can result in the engines oil no longer being able to properly lubricate the engine and possibly running the engine and making a bad situation worse or shortening its life. 2. You get to choose when and where the service gets done and also have the funds ready as you get to decide when it gets done rather than your vehicle. (Kind of like any other maintenance item). We have had clients do just this for all the same reasons you pointed out. Also like you pointed out, If a new vehicle payment is $500.00 to $1000.00 a month for 4-8 years, the vehicle would only need to be driven for 3-6 months to already be saving money. Plus a lower type of insurance could be held as opposed to new car full coverage and thus saving more money as well. Lastly if you do end up selling it or trading it in a year or two after the service, you would have added a selling point for someone and get a clear conscious as well. Good luck with the decision. Thanks for posting.

Dallas Texas, If you replace just the water pump, oil, oil filter ,gaskets and coolant it would run around $2300 plus tax. While it is apart you may opt to replace the thermostat,belts,timing chain,adjusters it and that adds about $670.00 (still pus tax) on the higher mileage one with factory spark plugs that can be done at the some time for just the price of the plugs. Once it is taken apart there are several other parts you can replace with little to no extra labor. We have also occasionally have the oil control solenoid go bad and at least one of the two needed to be replaced. Sorry to be long winded but with being transparent and trying to get it done 100% correct but at the most affordable way possible and warranty it for 3/36 I like to go over all the options before we start so the owner can make an informed decision and do what makes the most sense both for time and money. On some of these where it was run with mixed coolant (oil and water) for too long ,just trading it made more sense. Thanks for the question and sorry your having to deal with this.

Hi Rusco321, It really comes down to the milage on what parts to replace. Basics like the chain adjuster are a good idea to replace, plus the thermostat as many of these do overheat and set codes for it. Then look at the drive belts for any wear and replace while off. If it is over 100,000 miles replacing the chain is an option (many times chains can and do go the life of the engine) other things like guides and idler pulleys need to at least be inspected. While the valve covers and intake manifold is off you can easily get to the spark plugs and save having to take this all apart at a later date. Great question, thanks for asking.

How much did you charge for the R&R of the water pump on that engine
@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Delbert , It really depends what you replace while it is apart, if you did just the water pump,labor sealer,coolant , oil & filter you will be in around $2,000 to $2,200.00 then if while it is apart you replace the chain , guides,adjusters, spark plugs, thermostat (if it overheated or only got hot), crank seal, belts for the power steering ,alternator and AC while it is all apart that can push it up to $2700.00 and we have seen a few with the VVT control solenoid throwing codes and replaced them while it was apart they are about $85.00 each. Of course this is all dependent on if the engine was ran too long with the coolant mixing with the oil and damaged the bearings for the cranks and cam shafts then a engine is the final fix for those. This one had just about every wear parts replaced while apart and had around 90,000 miles.

Hi Poor Boy 313, thanks for asking a really great question. It really depends on several things. If you do just the water pump and not the timing chain, guides,belt and chain tensioner, spark plugs, drive belt, and the other wear items while it is apart is cost a lot less (just parts at that point but they can really add up) then if you do all the other stuff. Also as some have pointed out if the oil has been badly contaminated and ran for a long time there may be damage to the crankshaft and camshaft bearings that would require the engine to be rebuilt or replaced. We will perform an inspection of the vehicle then sit down with the owner and come up with a plan that makes the most sense for the long term or short term plans for the car.

I don't necessarily disagree with you however we will take several things into consideration before condemning the motor as in giving the client no option for us other than to replace the motor. Of course the past service history of the motor. If the engine is or is not making any noise. If there is any metal debris found in the filter and or oil. Coolant level and a block check plus and data trouble codes in current, history and mode 6 and mileage are all part of providing an informed and educated decision for the client. If any of these fail then that may outright condemn the engine otherwise we can present the client with the option of trying to salvage what's there. Thanks for the statement, it's powerful and must be a serious consideration.

@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 4 жыл бұрын
Josh. Great question, Yes and no. Looking at later models after 2010 the water pump parts numbers change twice up into 2018. For 2019 I no longer see the 3.5 offered in the Edge. But all of them are chain driven. We do not see many doing this after 2010 until a much higher mileage. So the new design seems to last longer and if they do leak less of them leaking into the crankcase. Thanks for posting

We can only hope Mazda has a better pump! In the book the Mazda calls for about 2 hours less (More room?) time but the part numbers are the same in the aftermarket for the pump. Some of these show a 3.5L and a 3.7L for the Mazda CX9. Time will tell both if the factory pump from Mazda is better and if the aftermarket pumps last longer than OE. Thanks for sharing with the group.

@Craigs_car_care
@Craigs_car_care 7 жыл бұрын
Hi MultiMiller100 If it is caught early enough there is an external "weep hole" so if it leaks it goes to the outside. On the ones that have mixed the coolant with oil were from ones that went so long the bearing for the water pump failed taking the seal out also and allowed the coolant to go pass and into the motor. On the last few there wa not a lot of noise (some but not a lot) We have started looking at the more closely when they are in for service to catch this before it gets worse. Great question, thanks for asking.

cazman408 I have a 2010 Edge with 155k miles on it. I do some of the maintenance, oil changes, coolant flush etc. You say there is a weep hole that goes to the outside of the engine? will fluid puddle on the ground, if the pump starts to go? also, do you know how far of driving is to far of with a bad water pump? Will an engine shop be able to tell if the bearings get damaged? I know my car is high on miles, but still it is cheaper to replace the engine than to buy a new car, so when the pump goes, it's getting fixed or the engine is being replaced. thanks for sharing the video!

Good Morning Daniel, Thanks for your question. Yes, that can make it to the ground. We recommend letting a tow truck bring in your vehicle as a $100.00 for a tow truck is way less than the cost of an engine and road side assistance or even some insurance companies will reimburse for towing (check yours to find out if you have towing) A repair shop will need to go down the list of what has failed and take it step by step to see how much damage has taken place. Verify a leak, and see if the coolant is low, engine codes, look at the oil for mixing of coolant and oil or it may still be clean. If you suspect the water pump is failing and or can hear noise any more running of the motor will make it worse and could ruin an opportunity to save yours. I hope this helps.

Not really, the engine though is designed to be removed very easily. However, I did this in a garage with the engine in; I had no jack stand. I had the same issue, replaced guides, primary tensioner, timing chain, oil pump (was working fine just did it because i had access), timing chain and have a 150,000 miles and still running strong. Sucks ass though this happened this badly at 70,000 miles. If you do decide to it the power steering pump bolt is main limiting factor, need a u type swivel socket adapater to get too, not sure of name, its a fuckin bitch to take off.

Hi Justin, Depending on what parts get replaced (it is driven by the timing chain and all of it comes off for the repair) It can run in the area of $2,000.00 to $2,700.00. Several of the more recent ones are at 100 k+miles,have us replace the timing chain,tensioner ,guides, seals,coolant,oil,filter,spark plugs thermostat, serpentine belt and it's tensioner/ some even end up getting new motor mounts while it is apart (it's just parts at this point) etc plus labor and sales tax. Some shops are doing these in the vehicle with mixed results. It saves labor when it works. Sorry your having to go through this ordeal and thanks for posting the question. Look for warranty's over 2/24 (we are up to 3/36 now.) If you do not have a shop you use ask for references and referrals plus read reviews to get a good feel for where you are going.
