Water Sloshing Noises + Coolant Reservoir Too Full. Bad Radiator Cap causing Air Pockets| VLOG-ish

While hearing these sloshing noises is almost guaranteed to be an air pocket issue, the causes for the air pocket can be varied.
In this video, I go through the thought process of breaking down the symptoms to come up with the possibility of a radiator cap.
History is important - and in this case, I know that although the radiator had been replaced a couple of thousand miles ago, the coolant reservoir has had the correct level of fluid all along. We'll keep an eye on it.

Great Vid bro. I literally just fixed this problem today with the same reason. My radiator cap in combination with too much gunk in the bottom of reservoir caused the coolant to go in the res but not back in the radiator. Had me stumped at first. Caused oil consumption and trans skips and all kind of mess. All fixed now with new OE cap and fresh coolant only. 06 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 3.5.

Crazy what a little cap can do when combines with dirty coolant. I eventually found my thermostat to be an issue, so I replaced that as well, but I always start with the cheap easy fixes. Stay safe out there ✊✊

I have a 2003 Honda Civic LX with no bleeder valve and used the funnel with coolant method to burp the system and it still didn't work. What I found out later is that you leave that funnel with coolant attached after shutting off the engine. Do not plug it. Let the coolant and engine cool overnight. As the coolant in the radiator and engine gets cold it contracts creating a vacuum sucking more coolant from the funnel. If you remove the fumnel too early, you risk sucking in air instead.

The sloshing isnt necessarily a problem if heard its just coolant in the heater core getting pushed through but it can possibly mean air pocket(s) or water trapped in ac evaporator drain pan. Can be clogged ac drain tube.

I'm having the same sloshing sound when I start the car to let it warm up and it's bad too, like a little kid sloshing around in the bathtub or something. The other night, I was driving it, and the "red" temperature light started flickering. Stayed on for a few minutes, then went off. I couldn't even pull over to shut the car off. I know, I should have tried, being that red light of death staring me at the eyes. Does this all correlate with one another?. Thing is, I had this (2011 Subaru Legacy) serviced barely four months ago. I told them to do all the fluids and anything else it needed. I never had this problem in all the nine years that I have owned it. That light never came on before, let alone the sloshing sounds beyond the dashboard. Not a happy camper.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee, same sound. But my radiator was replaced, hoses are checked and tight; thermostat and water pump replaced as well and work well. Base on your video, sounds like there is one more thing I can troubleshoot and that is the radiator cap. Once I replace the radiator cap with Jeep OEM, do I need to do anything for this change to take effect? Or is simply changing the radiator cap is enough?

Good video but what I'm thinking is that if air continues to get into the cooling system is that it may be an indication of a leaking head gasket letting air/fuel mixture be pushed into the cooling system rather than a faulty radiator cap letting air in. If that is the case, I recommend a product called K-Seal.
@EdBwoy
@EdBwoy 2 жыл бұрын
You are right about that. If the air pockets persist, then it would be time to dig further into the diagnosis. As complex as a cooling system might be, one of the most crucial parts happens to be the cheapest, so sometimes it just makes sense to replace it with a known good one. For me, I was lucky to have another car to exchange with.

@@EdBwoy how does a wrong thermostat cause air inside your cooling system?
@EdBwoy
@EdBwoy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Prime-nf5yy the stars have to be aligned perfectly for that to happen. Bad thermostat blocks flow, so a lot of the expanded coolant goes to the overflow. Ideally, the coolant should get sucked back into the system when it cools down, but it's not as efficient/immediate like the overflow process. If this keeps happening, you could lose more through the overflow than can be sucked back in, and eventually the system can start sucking air back in.
@EdBwoy
@EdBwoy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Prime-nf5yy a little extreme example, but I have watched a car overheat and overflow the reservoir, so it was parked and left alone to stop boiling. The next day the reservoir was dry as a bone. It might have looked like it was "eating coolant" but my experience with high compression aluminum engines is that they are more likely to push exhaust gases into the coolant system than vise versa

@@Prime-nf5yy I installed new Thermostat and Radiator cap and bled the coolant. After the first drive i was above the max line again, so i siphoned off the reservoir coolant and put into the radiator, i then removed coolant where it was a little above the Min level. After letting the car rest overnight int he freezing cold in nyc and checking today, i noticed the coolant was way below the Min level, so i added some extra coolant. The idea is when i drive and the car is hot i want it to HIT the max line and only the max line, so i followed EdBwoys advice in the second video. i am not driving today so i'll check tomorrow again. So far, so good. Positive thoughts.

@@DTUFINOPhotography i see. I have a similar problem with sloshing noise when the car moving. I have the new radiator cap and a new thermostat, but the coolant in the reservior is buliding up and not getting back to the radiator when the car is cold. I'm gonna try not to drive the car for 12 hours and hopefully the coolant reservior go back radiator. If not, i have to extract the coolant from the reservior and add it to the radiator and drive it to the mechanic.

@@Prime-nf5yy my car was not over heating at all, but i did get a new cap and thermostat just in case to prevent that from happening, I say top off the radiator and then remove some coolant from the reservoir and put it in a water bottle in your car... and then drive it and when its hot, check the level in the reservoir and then top it off if you need to. this is how I'm gaging. i think i may have too much coolant in the system because when its hot, it should hit MAX line and when its cold it should go down a bit. I'm still checking out and caring a large Syringe to remove and some. Dont take it to a mechanic yet, they will say you have a blow head gasget.

@@DTUFINOPhotography I see... my car is not overheating too. My average temp is 184F using my OBD while driving for 15-20 minutes. My reservoir is different. Coolant should be between low and full. Once it near full or over the full line, that's when I started to extract the coolant from the reservoir and store it on water bottle so I can use it to re-fill up the radiator when the engine is cold. To confirm, you want me to fill up the radiator first then extract any excessive amount from the radiator reservoir and put it in the water bottle?

@EdBwoy
@EdBwoy 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like if you see the bubbles actually forming, you're dealing with a breach of exhaust gases into the coolant. Sometimes you can also see the coolant boiling in the reservoir and if you smell it, it smells a little different. Sometimes engines eat coolant, but sometimes the crack/hole/gap etc is only evident when the engine is hot and the in-cylinder pressure is pushing outwards

@EdBwoy
@EdBwoy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Regarding the radiator cap, no you don't have to open it for that purpose. The overflow tank/coolant reservoir should be handling that part - take out the air, and replace with coolant. If the system is working properly, no air should be introduced into the system. However, I do open my cap once in a while just to make sure that I have coolant all the way to the top.

I am not very familiar with your car, but sometimes a blend door gets stuck or fails. That is what directs air to blow over the hot coolant in your dashboard. I would hate to send you on a wild goose chase though, so I suggest you have it checked by a professional. Delaerships can usually do different test to open/close all these doors while troubleshooting what exactly failed.
