Perfect timing for this, with Halloween around the corner. I’ve pretty much only used water-based, and that is solely based on cost, but after your explanation of the uses for alcohol-based, I might have to start investing in at least black and red for line work. Thank you for this video. As always, it was incredibly informative!

Oooo playing around with line work would be a great way to get a feel for them! Veining is incredibly fun with the paint transparency :D

Best technical video ever! I came from a tech field and miss informational vids like this. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Pros/cons, how to apply and most important, how to remove. At a con for instance, if alcohol activated was used as a base with water activated as a top coat for it's pros, of course water activated would suffer long term, would alcohol activated act as a "primer" and minimize negative effects of a day at a con?

I'm so happy you enjoyed it Steve! From how I've used them layering, you absolutely can use alcohol paints as a base and apply water-activated on top. However, alcohol paints are still very breathable so they won't stop sweat from getting through on the skin and it will affect the water based paints. I would still use a sealer at the end to make the paints last as long as possible :)

Dawn liquid soap removes water activated paints like butter! One application of dawn and its offffff!

I did a Venom look with water activated paint and washed most of it off in the shower. When I came out, I still had rings of black all around my eyes. I looked like a raccoon lol. Don't worry it came off with makeup wipes :p

Which is better for sensitive skin? Which has a red that can be used around the eyes? So far the only thing I've found that doesn't make my eyes start watering and my sinuses close up is Wet N Wild's multi-sticks, which is fine for small areas (I used two of them, dusted with mica powder, for a phoenix look for the ren fair) but they wouldn't work for a whole face look.

Water activated paints are often better for sensitive skin. A lot of reds can be a little much around the eyes and will usually have warnings on the packaging if they shouldn't be applied to the eye area, but what I usually do is use a red face paint for the majority of my face and then for the eyes I'll use a red cream base and set with eye shadow. This way you still get the full pigmentation but the irritation isn't there. ^_^

Can i use alcohol paints as an undercolor to water paints? Sort of like an underpainting that won't sweat off.

It definitely does help for longevity! I would normally still recommend a setting spray for the water based paint after words, just in case some sweat gets through but it will certainly make a difference ^_^

Does using the sealer on the water based paints increase the difficulty of removal significantly?

It definitely makes it harder to remove than with just water, but still pretty easy to take off with an oil cleanser, body wash, or makeup remover :D

This was very helpful thank you. A few questions that are probably very stupid. 1. Can I not use alcohol with my water based make up? 2. Are regular make up primers ok to use before?

No stupid questions! Only way to learn is with questions ^_^ 1. I'm uncertain if that would cause damage to the paint overtime or not. It would probably activate the water-based paint fine while it's wet (though it will evaporate much faster). The only thing is, it probably won't change the performance of the water based makeup too much. Alcohol paints are very long lasting because they are also formulated with alcohol in their creation. I imagine using alcohol on water based paints might be the equivalent to an alcohol setting spray? But I'm not positive, as I have never used them that way unfortunately. 2. From my experience primers don't really effect either paints very much. Unless you had like an oil primer - that could make water-based paints a little tricky to adhere to the skin but most primers should be fine to prep your skin with. They will be more of a benefit to your skin (like hydration or smoothing) but won't really change how the water or alcohol paints wear throughout the day. :)
