Hi everyone, in this demonstration I am focusing on the atmosphere, mood and feelings. I’m simplifying, connecting, suggesting and telling a story instead of photocopying a subject. Painting cityscape on a rainy day is not an easy task but I believe watercolor is “made for this”... Please enjoy!

It has that Joseph Zbukvic feel to it - lots of grey tones and how the light hits various subjects in the painting. You've added some more vibrant colours to make it pop more. I can appreciate this as a high-quality watercolour painting, although personally I'm not so attracted to these types of paintings. They often seem to feature the buildings and traffic in a drab scene of urban sprawl, rain and people trapped in the rat-race; at least that's how I see it. I prefer your landscape paintings, which are always a breath of fresh air, full of life and the energy of nature.

Thank you Mark! I like how JZ aproaches a rainy street, but I also wanted to achieve the feel of a misty air...when you drive in the rain, there is always a cloud of water comes from underneath the wheels...that what I was focused on. JZ rainy roads are a bit too "perfect". You see that it's a rainy day, but you don't feel the rain in the air...so I experiment with a few techniques to achieve that. Honestly, I try not to have a preference in a subject, similar to children I suppose, but ofcause you get to be attached to one more the the other at certain times in your life. I'll try to paint a few landscape in the next couple of weeks :)

Hi Curvesellip, I'm so glad it's inspiring! Inspiration is a very powerful thing! I'd suggest starting from small (I have a video how to paint a house and a cow, also you can just do sky instead of the whole paint, etc) and watching the video multiple times. Also, pay attention not to what I paint but how: wet on wet or wet on dry, thickness of the mixture (how much water is in the mix - is it runny or sticky), darkness of the mixture (the tonal value of the mix), what type of mark the brush makes. It's like learning to drive, on the first try it looks impossible, after a number of years you have enough experience to anticipate things in advance.

@@nvfineartstudio7296 Thank you so much for this detailed response. This actually makes a lot of sense. And I actually tried painting yesterday by watching your video, and I observed that I was copying what you were doing instead of learning it. I guess I'll fix that. Thank you so much again!

@@curvesellip9953 copying is good, it develops muscle memory, if you think of sportsmen or musicians that's exactly what they do at the beginning. Modern western culture shames and bullies "copying" in reality it is an absolute must when you are learning

@@nvfineartstudio7296 that does make sense. Just the right balance of the two things (copying and engaging) should do it. And I guess the painting should turn out a little pleasing to the eye too in order to be in a feedback loop and not be disheartened. So ig also for that matter copying is good. Thank you once again for your kind response. You seem like a great teacher!

The very first time I stumbled on your works it was that one. Just fell in love on the spot. I love the misty feeling, almost like if there was layers of rain and water in the air between us and the background. And those luscious greys in the buildings. I think you are using primaires here to create that violet so that the blue and red separate at time, very clever. But I wonder how there could also be some warm in it at times, notably under the church, perhaps a completely different grey there, or touch of sienna, added in the mid washed violet grey?… rich greys and opposing cool and warm are part of your magic. Beautiful and rich.

@@nvfineartstudio7296 Thank you so much, Nina for your reply. I have been painting (trying to, rather!) landscapes in watercolor for the last few years and have never been happy with myself. Many times I feel like stopping painting. But after watchin your demos, I think I would be able to achieve some good results. At least I am finding some direction. There is so much to learn from your style. As regards your example of ballet dancing, interestingly, my music Gurus says, you should have some knowledge of painting to become a good performer ! (I play Indian classical music on sitar) ! The two views are so much complementing each other, arent they? By the way, could you please guide me on what kind of paper should be used? I normally use 150 to 200 GSM handmade paper. Is that ok? Thanks and regards. Ajit

Love love love the use of several colors in building on the right, as well as the use of lost and found in just the right spots to describe the building without a ton of detailthat would distract the view!

Thank you very much Willie! To make a grey I usually use all the dark colors on my palette (ultramarine blue, Alizarin, B.sienna, probably N.Tint as well). Most important part is to focus on the tonal value (background is much lighter) thickness of the mixture (background is wet on wet, so the mixture was probably milk/cream consistency) and hue (warm or cool grey, your choice).
