Hi there, Liron here!
And today I want to talk to you about what I perceive to be one of the hardest watercolor painting techniques - blending and edge control!
Funny enough, this is also a very basic technique that I recommend mastering early on. It's an important pillar of watercolor painting.

02:05 - Demo
06:39 - Blending different colors

You enjoy the sound of rain?! I guess it must not rain much in Israel? :) Try living in Ireland, where it rains every day and let me know how you feel about the rain then. :P Really informative video, Liron. :)

Haha, I’ll admit we don’t get much rain here, and it seems the winters become shorter and shorter with every year that goes 😛 I hope to visit there one day!

I think we have the opposite problem. It seems Irish winters are getting longer and longer with each passing year! It is March and there is still ice and snow on the ground! You would be most welcome to visit if you can manage the rain. :) Did you ever get the email I sent you about Schmincke paints?

This has identified where I've been going wrong. I've been using the wet in wet technique, and using too much water so I get deeply saturated edges and very pale centres as the paint flows outwards!

I am two minutes and seven seconds into my first taste of your videos, and I already know I will be coming back for more. Why? It's a) your command of the language of artmaking, and b) your effortless blend of seriousness and humor, and c) ....well, I'll let you know as soon as I've digested a couple more of your posts, but I'm certain there will be more. Well done, Liron, and thanks.

I'm eternally grateful. Thank you so much! I fell in love with watercolour many years ago (since Atanur Doğan founded International Watercolour society in 2011) but there were not enough educational sources then. So, I quit-I was so frustrated with the results. In the past few months, I started again and I realized that there are plenty of sources. Thank you so much! You are a great teacher!

I’ve already mentioned that I’ve been doing a course using wet in wet. The instructor provides templates, and I use them just to save time. What he’s doing is adding small puddles of water, and then he starts the painting with wet on dry and touches into the puddles. I kind of figured it out, but had a hard time following, and I think part of the problem is the amount of paint vs water, but he never really talks about that when he’s doing the demo. I end up with areas that are too wet or too dry. Meanwhile, I’m watching him blend everything together beautifully! I can’t believe he’s labeling these a “beginner” courses. We started with some very basic leaves, and only used one color. I kind of got that. Then he moved to a couple of trout, and that required 2 colors, lots of wet and dry manipulation, blending colors, etc. I managed to kind of get it, but I did not have fun!
@LironYan
@LironYan 3 жыл бұрын
Haha sounds complex indeed! I often do it the same way - wetting an area, then painting while touching it to get a blended transition. You can actually see the technique in this other vid I did: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJucn7GDr9W2YGQ.html (I already link to the relevant time in the vid) Let me know if this helps simplifying it a bit. I should probably do another example of this in the future (: This has a lot more nuances to it, you can pre-wet a certain area and use it to create a varied edge - sometimes hard and sometimes soft.
@annewatman677
@annewatman677 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I’m going to watch what you’re doing, and I’d love it if you did more on this. The results really are impressive, but it IS complex! I would get parts of it, but then my paint would get too dry in some areas, and I had a hard time keeping track of everything. You are so nice to respond because I’m kind of lost right now. I want to do watercolor, and I really don’t know where to start. If I was following your beginner videos, where would you have someone start? I’ve actually done a fair amount of watercolor, but I’d happily go back to the beginning and learn more about technique.

We've been told to stay home in Canada (Covid-19 social distancing), so I decided to buy some water colours so I had something to do. Just wanted to say that your tutorials are so helpful because they show things like how to use the brush - not just a "this is how you paint a flower". So I've been painting for just over a week. Not saying I'm that good. But improving and and proud of what things are starting to look like. Although my chicken attempt was not that great, each flower I do focusing on brush stroke, not a painting "recipe" seems to be getting better. So ...thank you. Nice videos. Good instruction. Hope you're all safe in Israel.

I think it’s really important that you take your time. I know most people want quick videos, but that doesn’t help those of us who are learning. So the long explanations are necessary, very important and I’m very grateful. I’m definitely new, but try every day for showing depth, blending and of course making objects look shiny. This is my constant practice. Thank you for the videos

It is very clear for how you control the amount of water, I really need this, many videos they just apply color but they do not really show how much water they are using and is there paint on the brush, I think it is very important to a totally beginner like me. Thank you very much and now I am doing this training all the time and trying to make my circles to have as smooth as transition as possible.

Thank you for a fantastic demo! Maybe you have covered this somewhere else, but can you explain a little on how this technique works when working on top of other layers of paint (when to dry the lower layers completely, and when to leave damp etc), and also, how do artists manage to finish the entire foundation wash before parts start drying (thus ending up with the patchy parts you had mentioned in this video). Sorry for the long comment, and thanks so much once again!!

I'm very new to watercolour painting. Thanks for your expertise in this technique. I live in Ontario Canada where I can have some spectacular views to paint. I'm hoping I can learn to do that.

I really love your videos about water color techniques. Basic or advanced. I learn so much, especially about why my own experiences did not work that good … Thank you, Liron! 😎👍🏻

Thank you so much for your videos! As a watercolor newbie, I appreciate everything that helps, and since I‘ve started a couple of months ago (ferociously painting), I feel like I‘ve already learned so much. Every week or so feels like a milestone. Absolutely love watercolors. Your channel is a gem!
