Very nice. Excellent tutorial. This part of Australia reminds me very much of the area of the northern Sacramento Valley, right at the edge of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. I lived there from 79-88 and the photograph could easily have fooled me into believing it was taken there. Trees were a bit different, but not much. I've only just received your two books and look forward to working my way through them.

Great Australian scene! With respect to wetting the back of the paper and the board - What happens if the painting isn’t finished in one session? Cheers Trish
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Trish, if the paper starts to cockle, you just need to lift the back and gently rewet areas. If it is totally dry, in the case where you work on a painting over a couple of days, then you have to carefully repeat the original wetting process, without getting any water on the front of your painting.

Just found your tutorials on you tube and I love them. Can you tell me what type of pallet you use? Is it plastic or metal and where can it be purchased. I intend to work through the beginner tutorials as I have found them very informative.
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, I designed and made my palette with a 3d printer as I wanted 4 good sized mixing areas and paint wells. I also wanted a palette I could use for painting outdoors. It is still under development. This palette on Amazon should work for your when you first start out. You can upgrade later if you really catch the watercolor bug. :-) www.amazon.com/Mr-Pen-Watercolor-Paint-Palette/dp/B0949SL8HR/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=paint+palette&qid=1676314044&sr=8-8

Hi Joe keep watching and learning from the videos. When you mixed the ground colour you said it was just a weak raw umber?? Is that correct? Looks like green in it to me. Regards Andy
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 8 ай бұрын
Hi Andy, I often start with raw umber, but would have also added some other colours, i.e. cobalt turquoise and aureolin of winsor lemon, to lean parts of the ground towards green.

When you have mixed/blended paint leftover, do you let it dry to re-use on a later painting or do you clean it off to begin afresh next time?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
I leave it to dry and reuse if I can. It depends on the new painting. If the leftover colours don't work I clean them off at that point.

Great work Joe, really enjoyed following the process. Your demos. are always easy to follow and you do explain each step you are going to do. Excellent. One question: how do you clean your palette, there is no sign of blues or reds or dark colors used. I cannot clean mine like that. Thanks and your videos are always most appreciated. Marjo.
@JoeCartwright

Glad it was helpful! Other than Permanent Rose I do not use any staining colors and since I only use Permanent Rose in small amounts it does not stain my palette very much. You could try using tooth paste as that can be helpful in cleaning a palette. Let me know how you go.

Hi Jo, Thanks for your answer. It seems to me that you have a thin metal palette which will explain the "no stains" on it. I do have one like that and you are right it is easy to clean even with very strong pigments stains. My other palette is plastic and that is the one full of "colors memories". I will try the toothpaste on the plastic one and let you know the results. Thanks and do have a fantastic day, Marjo.
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
@@marjonk71 Hi Marjo, my palette is plastic which I made myself with my 3D printer. It is made relatively stain proof with an epoxy coating, however colours like Prussian Blue will still stain it so I usually use those colours in ceramic plates.

@@JoeCartwright Hi Joe, I am impressed that a watercolor palette can be done on a 3D printer. I know a lot of items can be printed but congratulations to you doing that. Awesome....Thanks for your reply. Have a great day. Good evening from here....Marjo.

Can you put wet cheese cloth under the paper instead of wetting the board ? Is the paper still wet till the end of the painting?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
I intend to experiment with different wetting options as not everyone has gator board. Cheese cloth on an acrylic board might work. Sometimes I need to rewet the back of my paper, depending on the duration of the painting session.
@derekleroy1619

What is the purpose of wetting the back of the paper and the board?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
A number of things: It keeps the paper flat. More importantly it slows the drying time of your washes, which gives you more time to paint clean watercolors. The main reason a watercolor painting drys fast, is not evaporation, but the fact that the paper underneath the surface absorbs moisure. By pre-wetting it and board you slow down this process considerably. It also reduces (not totally removes) the need to use a spray bottle.

It's called gator-foam board. But these days I just use a piece of mat-finished black acrylic.
