How to use Saran Wrap and tube watercolor to create monoprints at home.
You will need : dry watercolor painting on Saran Wrap, container to soak paper, paper to print on, tracing paper and a metal spoon.

-Very good presentation, thank you! I am very interesting in hearing how you got the thin paper with the bird to glue on the print? I think it,s called chiné collé, when we add small pieces like that.

thanks for sharing - yep its a shame about the blotting issue. Have you ever tried over printing a second watercolor layer onto a dried and re-soaked watercolor print?

Yes, I tried it a few ways with varying results...I found that the watercolor had the tendency to lift off if soaked too long. Did a few tests and still was able to get a good impression with minimal fading of first layer with a quick dunk and very soft blot-think of it like a quick swipe, just enough to lift off the surface of water droplets without pressing into the paper too much. When I blotted with more pressure like I would with a regular sheet, it pulled off more of the first layer.

Great tutorial - Just getting into the printing process. Have you tried using a rolling pin also instead of a spoon? Just wondering I will experiment with both. Wanted to share this. I recently did a print workshop and we worked on large presses and these mini presses which I just order. Search for "open press project'

Hi Scott! I like the spoon because I can get more directed pressure in areas of the drawing. A rolling pin may work, but I think it will end up printing light. Let me know how it goes - I'll check out your project, thank you!

Thanks. What medium did you use to paint on too of seran wrap?

Hi Christina- I used a tube watercolor, without diluting (I just dabbed my brush to the open tube). You can use water but too much makes it reticulate-which can yield some neat results!

Have you ever used this process on arches water color paper, can I use wax paper instead of tracing paper??I bought a roll of arches 10yds at xmas (which took a while to save up for that )lol so I dont feel guilty if I try a few new media watercolor aspects of art form and expanding my watercolor art. My art teacher ed cooper from UK was talking about how he started in the ink and printing process of art went to oil and such and now hes teaching watercolor so I was like yes maybe watercolor could be used somehow and I dont need to use ink. Also michele webber used ink for a drawing and painting ,there was also another art teacher who use india ink in a watercolor simple drawing anne kerr used ink and it inspired me to say hey I wonder🤔 if I could really use a watercolor media that would look like there ink process paintings , it's funny how watching a few of your teachers in one form of median and those teachers added some form of wc to do their median inspires your thought process and creativity and So I started looking on ytube to see if theres anyone in the art community who has thought thru this process with using watercolors....🥳🥳yeah thank you for this video.......before I had gotten my wcp I always wanted to try to see if there was many different forms of watercolor applications, I also like the India ink but I know it's a potential spill issue for me as I'm not very steady....this process you've taught us on this video seems very doable for me to achieve on a limited art budget....also it's a way to accomplish more paintings....thanks for any help from a older older beginning artist..🎨👩‍🎨pardon xbox orange guy daughter is a gamer and we share internet connection....

The Arches paper will work well, the soaking time will vary depending on the weight of the paper. Do you know what lb it is? If it is 90 lb, try a 5 minute soak. Once you've printed on it, you may want to sandwich it with some interleaving (put a piece of copy paper over the image, a piece of cardboard and weight it down with a book). This will prevent it from buckling as it dries. You can also tape it once printed with pre-gummed paper tape and then continue to paint on top as you would with a typical watercolor. There are a lot of possibilities! As far as wax paper, I think the paint will buckle more because of the coating, but test it out. If you have sandpaper, try giving it a light scuff before you paint to give it something to hold on to.

This process was born out of limited materials when Covid shut down our campus and my students were without their materials. I tried out lots of different things that I thought my students would have easy access to at home and could print by hand-I'm all about experimentation and mixing media, I hope you enjoy trying it out!

Hi Dhruv, I printed on Stonehenge for the bird and got good results-just blot the paper well before printing. I also tried Masa for the moon print and got decent results, but don’t soak it as long since it is thinner paper. It’s all about experimentation, my students were using whatever they had available at the time.

@@dhruvkashyap9801 You're welcome! The third and final print was done on Sumi paper, which is a thin rice paper you can buy in the calligraphy aisle at most craft stores.

I tried with a different wrap and it doesn't work to paint at least half of what you are able to do. Saran Wrap is not available in Europe and so I need to go to plexiglass probably. Thank you for this tutorial!

I had better success using tube watercolor and very little water to activate. I recently learned that you can run your brush over a bar of soap and that will help the paint to stick when you’re making a monotype. frosted duralar is a good surface if you can get it. If you use plexi, you might also try lightly sanding it. I’m going to experiment more this semester! Good luck, glad you came across my video!

@@rachaelmariebower thank you! I think that sanded plexi will be my direction. And of course, soap! (I did used tube watercolors)
