Hi there, Liron here!
When I got started in watercolor, I ran into some issues and problems for which I COULDN'T find explanations or solutions anywhere.
What bothered me was how to approach the painting process in general. This includes questions like "Should I cover the entire paper in the first wash?" or "How do I know how dark to go in the beginning?" and so on.
In this video I attempt to provide a solution to some of these issues, by explaining my general approach to the different stages of watercolor painting.
TIME STAMPS
00:49 - General pointers
02:11 - 1st wash (= layer)
03:14 - 2nd wash
04:20 - 3rd wash
04:54 - 4th wash and beyond
05:29 - Every painting is a little different / Conclusion
06:25 - Outro
EXPLANATION
I want to first emphasise that this is MY WAY of doing this.
I encourage you to learn from many teachers, so that you can get multiple perspectives on the painting process.
That way you'll find what works best for YOU.
Each wash (same as layer) plays a different role in painting.
My approach is to make the most out of each wash.
This means I'll try to get a good indication of the values and colors already in the first wash.
I do this by using wet-in-wet, as well as lifting when necessary.
Now let's go over the specific washes...
1ST WASH (02:11)
My goal here is to cover everything up except for the highlights.
In this particular painting, I also left the background empty at this stage, because the figures are the most important part.
I also planned on filling the background up later on with one light wash.
Sometimes it would be better to cover it up as well.
In this stage I'm not too concerned with letting the different colors "bleed" or run into one another. You can also see some blooms and cauliflowers (this happens when wet paint runs into a significantly drier paint.
My only concern is to produce an even result that also shows the variation in values and colors.
You may want to create some variation in the edges (meaning to blend some of them) if necessary. The only edges I blend in this demo are the shadows' edges.
2ND WASH (03:14)
The second wash is dedicated to the mid-values. This means the areas that are darker than the initial wash.
In some cases this can mean going over MANY parts of the initial wash.
At this stage you also want to pay more attention to the edges. You may need to blend some of them, or leave some of them hard and sharp.
3RD WASH (04:20)
At this stage we want to put in the darkest, richest shadows.
In addition, you may have missed some mid-values you need to place in now. This is very common and is perfectly find.
At this stage, you want to make sure you are painting a little more accurately and stay loyal to the drawing. The reason is that the darker you go, the harder it is to correct mistakes.
4TH WASH (04:54)
This wash and beyond, for me, are devoted to adding small details that I didn't get the chance to, or darkening things that weren't darkened enough up to this point.
I find that if I did everything correctly so far, I'll only have several small details to add in now, and I can wrap up the painting.
In this specific demo, my 4th wash was simply placing the background, but that can change from one painting to another.
Which brings me to my next point...
EVERY PAINTING IS DIFFERENT (05:29)
Remember that every painting is a little different.
With that being said, I do find that each TYPE of painting can have similar "blueprints".
For example, if I'm painting people, I will most likely work similarly to this painting.
I'll treat the painting as if only the people are there, and then add the background.
For a landscape painting, on the other hand, I'll probably cover everything up in the very first wash.
So hopefully this makes sense.
I hope you found this video helpful and learned something new, and perhaps enjoyed it too (:

You're right. I decided to learn to paint with watercolors at the beginning of the year 2017. I had not painted anything until this week. I'm not kidding: for a long time I managed to find excuses addressed to not face that initial moment. Everything indicated that humanity was going to lose another genius in the darkness of time and fear. lol But something changed: just this week I did my first watercolor illustration and, praise the god of mental health, I had the courage to show the result to friends and family. Now I see a beautiful creative journey on my way. Regards dude(s)

This was helpful for breakign the watercolor painting method into steps. Also, it made me realize that my biggest problem with painting is that I have to like the subject. I have to be able to connect with , to enjoy the subject in some way. For me, that's painting en plein air and with live models. At this point, usually my models are strangers who don't know they're being painted, but if they do notice, they don't tell me stop. Still, it's something that I saw and chose. Reference photo for finishing the painting later. That way, I can put in the effort and the details. Otherwise, if it's a dead Alamy stock photo of people I've never met and places I've never been, the painting doesn't work. I can't make myself care. It's okay for practice--sometimes, but often even then, it's a hill not worth climbing. I'm not complaining about youtube tutorials. It's like this with any kind of academic instruction. It's an issue with motivation.

Hey liron. I love this watercolor piece. 2 questions: did you wait for each layer to dry? Did you rewet the surface before applying a new layer? Eliz from tell aviv
@LironYan
@LironYan 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊🙏🏼 1. Some of the layers I did some wet in wet, so I was adding paint while it’s still wet. But ultimately at some point I wait for the current layer to dry completely before moving on (and there are roughly 4 of these completely dried layers). 2. No, I didn’t (: I very rarely do that, out of fear that it will reactivate the previous layer.

Thank you for your reply. It is interesting that every artist has a different technique. That there is not only one way to go with watercolor. Watercolor can be very intimidating and if you don't know how to handle them you can end up with a muddy painting. Keep on posting new tutorials.

@LironYan
@LironYan 4 жыл бұрын
Very interesting, it will be hard to know without seeing, but here are two things to check: 1. I think this may be the issue - perhaps you are not using large enough areas of shadow? Try merging a few of the small details you see into one single shape representing the shadow. Check out this video for a demo of a similar subject that really shows this (especially the 2nd wash): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q86RhtmX2KrToqc.html 2. You may not be going dark enough. Let me know if this helps, and thank you for watching 😊🙏🏼

wow... :O It looked so weird in the first wash, with all those rainbow colors, but it all tied together so well in the later washes. ...I kind'a have trouble in thinking ahead that way, hard to imagine the final product when the start looks nothing like it, and I often want a first sketch or first bit of coloring to resemble how I want it to look at the end, or else I just feel it's not working. (is there a way of learning such a thing?)
@LironYan
@LironYan 6 жыл бұрын
The secret is to just do the technique, and understand that it will only look good with shadows added (: The first wash is never an indication of the final work. You know what's funny? Here's what will probably happen: 1. You'll do a first wash / sketch *you personally don't like*. 2. You'll show it to me and I'll tell you *I have no idea what you are talking about* 😂 And that all you have to do is add another layer, or do XYZ and it will be perfect. 3. You will, and it will look great. When you see other people paint you just follow their vision, so you feel it less. But their work also looks incomplete, or weird. But they just keep going and make the vision come true. Have faith and just continue to the next steps. You'll know what to correct then. I hope this helps! (:

You are right these are the questions I am asking myself with waterco!or please slow down with your answers so I can understand . Your talking and going way to fast for me . A slower longer video would be welcome.
