Watercolor painting - How to keep the sketchbook page flat?

Thank you so much for sharing! I just finished a painting yesterday that used a lot of wet in wet, and had problems with buckling and accidentally got paint on the next page. This looks super useful, I'll have to try it for my next one. The painting is beautiful, love the colours!

I just love the galaxy painting! I will have to get some of those writing boards! In addition to keeping your paper flat they have an added bonus of preventing watercolor (or any mixed media) from getting onto adjacent pages and give your painting a nice white frame with the tape used to secure them. Hi Paula! I think the food cutting boards would work really well here too :) I used to do this with the backing of finished paper pads...

I love all your videos- I saw the one where you got those boards and I was curious too- very neat. Love your galaxy painting- I have never tried Holbein- am curious about them. i see another watercolor set in my future!! :)

I love Holbein paints! :) They have a formula much like the one we are used to with brands like Winsor&Newton or Daniel Smith, but they offer a different range of colors, including pastels. I know the idea of pastel colors in watercolor is a bit odd, but they make for soft convenient colors and a lot of Japanese artists use Holbein, since it's easier to find over there :)

That's true! They are very relaxing and there's basically no way to mess them up so it's always satisfying to finish one.

Ah, I was wondering what you were going to use the plastic sheets for - great tips! Also, didn't know they are called 'writing boards'...now I understand the use of them after reading the description on JetPens. I used to have laminated 'writing boards(I'd rather call them guides but)' with lots of different things(usually cartoon characters) printed on them when I was wee! :D

I used to have guide sheets with darker lines on them, but would always end up losing them XD It's cute that yours had cartoon characters on them! Good way to make sure the kids want to use them.

I think the ones we would get from a stationery store were double sided - cartoon characters or famous actors/actresses' photos on one side, then grids/ruled lines on the other. Usually sold to kids, but also teenagers. It was fun collecting different ones. And as you can guess there were some dramatic moments and incidents over these writing boards, too, haha!

Thank you! :D The board is relatively flexible, it's about 1mm thick. It bends a bit, but I can't see myself folding it without breaking it.

another awesome video. do you have one on how to do galaxies? i have seen a lot or people do them but i dont know how they are done.

Thanks Karia! :) I have a few, actually. They are all timelapses, I've never really made a realtime tutorial with narration. (ex kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rK9zfddo35ill6c.html). Maybe I should make a new one though, with better footage and voiceover. Mh.

What a great idea and a lovely painting! Which brand of tape did you use? It leaves a nice clean line and doesn't destroy the paper.

Thank you! The green tape is Frogtape Painter's Tape, made by Shurtape.

How do you keep the left side of the page flat? It's more unruly. Do you place tape at the back?

Hi, i taped my paper with masking tape and it's middle buckle, so now I have a hill in the middle of my paper. Can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

@dutch Thanks! To be honest, I didn't think people would want to see the realtime thing. I know I can't narrate the realtime thing, but I'm be fine with posting some full length, realtime paintings. What do you like to watch? (Just curious!)
