A start-to-finish lesson on interpreting photographic reference into a communicative watercolor painting. The subject is The Lake in NYC's beautiful Central Park.
The goal of the painting was to show ways in which the painter can design a work based on a combination of physical real-world observation, memory, and pure imagination.
+This painting was done on Baohong Watercolor Paper - rough surface - 300gsm :
+15X22 inches
+Pigments by Daniel Smith
+Brushes by Escoda and Neef
+Palette by House of Hoffman
+Sketch pencils by Blackwing and Faber-Castell
+Sketchbook by Stillman + Birn
Thank you for watching! Tom

Mr. Schaller, you are truly the best teacher, in that you actually teach one to THINK as an artist should. While technique is also half of the equation, the thought processes and learning "how to see" are foundational and what ultimately control our art. Anyone can learn technique- but it is what goes on in our mind which ultimately determine how we use marks on a piece of paper to establish a cliche to represent the vision we are trying to convey. This is invaluable! Thank you! Bob Ross could teach anyone to paint...like Bob Ross; but a good teacher enables 'you' to paint like...'you'!

I too love Baohong Masters- the only paper that works for me, in this very wet, humid climate I live in. Baohong behaves as if it can read my mind. The Chinese have been making paper for a thousand years. It shows.

Hey, Tom! Thank you for doing this. I think of you often because I learned so much in your workshop in Fallbrook way back in 2014. And I love that you still use the lavender splatters. That pigment is always on my palette! You have just energized me to get painting again after a couple of years hiatus. Thank you! Take care! Deb

I like how you calmly react to the "halo" effect. My first reaction would be "I've ruined it!" My second reaction would be throwing water and paint at it, then running for the magic eraser (this generally happens several times within one painting). It's nice to see you don't always get what you intended on first try, generally you seem so controlled and perfect. I like to see how other watercolorists deal with problems - good way to learn.

Thanks and yes! Don't think I've ever done a painting where some things don't go "wrong". But it's all part of the fun. You get better at deciding quickly if it's really bad, or just a good surprise.
