I recently joined a handful of artists at Findhorn for a plein air meet-up. It was my first public plein air meet-up and we had super intense weather! I'll show you my supplies (mainly pocket watercolor palette), where I painted, what I painted, and some of the group fun! Enjoy this story time video :)

painting in a group is the best thing. I feel nervous about setting up on my own and just can not relax into it as I worry about getting mugged lol. Its so great to see different takes on a scene and how others compose the exact view onto canvas. One time we found the most fantastic location and when we compared our efforts at the end I was amazed by one lady who had turned her chair and did the most incredible detailed painting of some tree bark. I learnt a lot that day and never look at great a view without reading the rest of the surroundings now.

This was great! You were lucky to have a building to go into and paint, not something that typically happens at a plein air meet-up. It made me smile when I saw that your grass painting techniques (including pinching the brush) were exactly like mine. You were able to capture the moment in all your little paintings so well!

Also nice to have company and sharing. Painters are very lonely most of times. I am going to join a plein air meetup in august and a drawing meet up in a botanical garden. Th art academy of Leeuwarden organises this. I am very excited. Never done this before.

What a great video! As soon as I heard the wind 💨, I said to myself., “oh no! Not good!”. I’m in the States. For years, I would travel to various parts of France, England to meet up with friends for a Plein Air Holiday. Lugging all my art stuff across the pond. I loved it. Then one day I fell out of love with Plein Air. I still create Art. Just not traveling with it. I did learn to downsize the supplies. Thank you for bringing back memories of the good times I had. I enjoyed meeting people. You’re a wonderful artist. Adore your channel.

I enjoyed this. I've never attended a plein air meetup before. It looks like a laid back atmosphere, which is something I'd really dig (as an extreme introvert). Your paintings turned out lovely. I'd probably take way too much stuff too on the first day, not really knowing what I'd want to paint with. I always have to remind myself that most times less is often more, when it comes to art supplies on the go.

Sarah, you may know this trick from your photography, but it may have helped you during this trip and ou didn't think to apply it. Some photographers, in lieu of a tripod or when one is not allowed, will use a string with a loop on it to steady their camera. They attach the string to the bottom of the camera and then drop the the other end, with the loop, to the ground. Putting their foot through the loop, they can pull up on the camera, which steadies it vertically. You could do some thing similar with your Etchr. Tie a string to/around the Etchr and then drop the other end to your foot, or if sitting, around your knee or leg. That should help keep it from lifting in the wind.

I'm obviously a LOTR geek... you went to Find horn and I keep saying FANGORN in my head lol! 😂🤣😂 And as usual I LOVE all your paintings, I hope someday to have the courage to paint in front of others. My biggest problem is fear of not being good enough, I don't even show anyone what I paint. My progress is so exasperatingly slow in improving. But I'm lucky to get maybe 2 hours a week to work at it. I'm working on being ok with that...

Everyone was so friendly. There were a few self-proclaimed beginners there and they said they had a great time. I know it’s scary when you first start putting your work in front of people. You might be surprised by how positive the response is! But just keep going at your own pace :)

Same here. I went to a weeklong workshop and I was so intimidated. I felt as though I was surrounded by real artists and they were producing so many pieces as I sat there perfecting my workplace and chatting. The instructor recommended a great book about this called “Art & Fear” by Baylis and Orland. It changed everything for me! I started having fun.

Definitely think about starting your own group. I did about a year ago and it has been very rewarding. When the weather is bad we paint in a coffee shop or cafe (nursery would work too). Otherwise we pick local parks, shopping areas and other scenic spots. The idea is just to get out and paint for 2 hrs together every week so it's often not super far from home. We work near each other and chat while we paint. We constantly learn from each other about classes, supplies, and techniques. The support from that group has been very rewarding both in art and life events.

This was a really nice share. I really liked the path scene and the huts. Fighting the elements wow - you definitely did. Went for a walk today with my daughter in the soupy 100 degree F+ heat wave going on around Atlanta. It kind of made me realize that our outdoor lake painting sesh will have to wait until end October when it cools down here. The heat is insane here. Mentioned you to my 13 year old daughter on the walk and our upcoming outdoor paint session and she said that Scotland is just so beautiful, but much cooler. The heat in the South is intense. I've been here 20 plus years, originally from New England. Being stuck inside the past 2 years, I think my perspective on what is feasible in the GA heat got foggy. You take a shower, go outside and it's like you get a 2nd shower of humidity. We live in the AC during the summer months, or our pool, so me and my girl are planning our outdoor paint fest appropriately in Sept October. Till then it's watercolors indoors or with a fan on the deck hehe. I have taken so many pics of the lake where I want to paint, so one of these days when I'm not doing portraits (my preferred), I will paint from my lake pics on my IPad. Thanks for sharing. You are an interesting person and live in an interesting place. The weather reminds me of when I studied in Canada 🇨🇦 at Uni. Take care, Jessica from GA

That must be so difficult! When I lived in Denver, mid-summer was insanely hot, but not humid. So as long as you found some shade, usually it was fine. But wow adding humidity.. that’s a big challenge!

You can't have too many large rubber bands, if need them so will someone else. An inexpensive way to make a new friend, give them an elastic band. Some of my favorite works are of the shore or boat yards. There appear to be plenty of them in Scotland, how fortunate you are to be there.

When you try organizing your own meet-up, maybe point out that your (beautiful) chunk of the coast doesn't get as much wind as the other one, so they can do more painting actually, like, outdoors? :D If you're going to travel anyway, I'd think it'd be worth an extra hour or whatever in the car to get more of the activity you're there for. Sounds like you had a great time, though. I really like the painting you did of that narrow alley with the... poppies? Whatever the bright flowers were on the left. Very pretty!

I went to a photography workshop near Killin last month and it Scotland'd all over us. So much rapid changing light and weather. And at beautiful Glencoe it was rain, pouring rain, and freezing rain. Everyone was soaked to the bone and had completely numb hands and faces. My "waterproof" jacket tried its best, but no human is meant to be out in that weather for that long. Lol. It was still beautiful, but rough. Spending money to go do something is definite motivation, "I fuc#ing paid for this thing, so I'm doing this if I die trying." ;)

The Aquabee paper just can’t take "learning layers" 😎 it’s all fuzzed where I finally painted over the palm tree for the 3rd or 4th time…hah. I did sort of get rocks in the end and that water is lovely turquoise to dark blue, so maybe I got some colors right. I loved your value painting of the keyhole closeup in the class and I figure the two days gave lots of material to chew on. Laguna, California is close to where I grew up, so it’s a special place. What a fabulous and lovely, lovely way to spend a weekend. Just so impressed by this video and the experiences you had. I could not be out in that weather because I don’t think I would cope with it very well. I don’t like getting chilled as I get sick. But when you are stronger it must be so refreshing and invigorating to make proof against the elements and stick at it to create something so personal as a set of memories that you will always have of that weekend. I think those paintings are so valuable because of how hard won the process for you was. It’s just so cool. Sad about your glasses and your phone case but even that is part of the memories of that wind and weather and you can only smile and appreciate just how special the whole experience really was. Really happy for you that you got to have such a unique experience like that with such wonderful and accepting people too.

Well done for sticking with it, and the positivity in reporting such a challenging time. I particularly love the dunes painting and those cool tones. I do hope to get to Scotland one day..am in Hampshire 😜 ❤️

I think your expectation of people congregating and pait8ng the same subject together was a reasonable one. You should ask the organizer if that would have been the norm so you what is expected. Things may be different there vs the US. If you ever come back to the US to paint, my wife and I love visiting Maine, which has some terrific coastline with varying terrain, marshes and bays to rocky cliffs, islands, old forts, and charming fishing villages. We'd join you with a group up there!

I think it may vary based on the location/weather plus the group dynamic. For instance, if *when* I organise a meet-up I’ll encourage everyone to stay closer together for at least a couple hours. But if they weather turned bad, I couldn’t reasonably expect everyone to stay put. I guess we have to get a bit lucky! I have been to York, ME many times, absolutely gorgeous. But I heard York isn’t really Maine…that I need to head inland to experience REAL Maine! Have you heard of the Adirondack Publisher’s Invitational? It’s my DREAM event…very pricey but I want to do it someday.

Just had a thought regarding your glasses on your next very windy plein air painting. Buy glasses chain, so if they blow off your face they will stay wrapped around your neck , like wearing a necklace if you know what I mean. 😊

impressive challenge you met so well! I also take every art supply I have on my trips and end up using only one or two. Haha. I love having everything, though, because I paint or draw as the mood and the subject suggest.

Lovely. Coming to your area in Scotland is now on my bucket list! Would be lovely to attend a workshop with you if you decide to do a live one! Also wish I could show you Betty's Bay in the Western Cape, South Africa. Mountains, sea, and very special flora called Fynbos. You will get a lot of bang for your buck here due to the weak Rand (our currency). The nature here also inspires wonder and awe!🌠😄

I'm from Inverness and I've seen this event but I feel like I don't fit there. Those people are so talented and this stresses me out as hell. I like your personality and how you enjoy the world around you 🙂 Watching and listening to you is so relaxing and encouraging 😊 Thank you!!!
