I personally think the best way it to go in loose at first, and then add layers to refine the piece and tighten up the look. For me that leads to a very gorgeous effect of some looseness but also some tightness

I personally really like the loose look. It's looks so effortless and messy and natural, which is just what I like. Besides, if you let the paint do its thing, the end result is kinda unpredictable. Which is also what I like. But I know a lot of people who like their painting to be perfectly done, almost realistic. So the other way is perfect for achieving that look.

She didn’t mention it but showed it in the video that wet on wet works really well to get an initial feel of the colors and making them compliment each other (the red bleeding into the shadows create an exaggerated version of the natural harmony like you’d see in a real image) and then layering it once dry with less watered colors to get sharper shadows and details. The very blurred together colors are very artistic and nice but personally I like adding contract by layering and making those well defined shadows (like she did with the leaves) and it looks more “realistic” that way. In short, you can control how much of each technique to use to achieve different results and most times a experienced artist will use both

I love hyperrealism done with tight watercolor, so many people (typically people who don't watercolor paint) don't even realize that it's possible! I use whatever technique that best suits what I'm doing, but I definitely use tight way more often.

wet on wet technique is great for BG and skin in my unprofessional experience

I like using gouache paint because you can get the best of both world of arcylic/oil and water color. Plus, you can reactivate it yo blend or to adjust by adding water after it dries. However, for professional pro-folio i still prefer oil

I'm an ink pen artist mainly but sometimes I use watercolour paint to add colour. I'm great with pens, not very good with paint brushes. So I like to use watercolours with the most minimal amount of water possible so it's opaque and easy to control. I prefer it to acrylic because it dries completely flat. I only use it to add colour pops and don't try to full on paint stuff so this dry watercolour method works well for my skills/ desired results. .

So one problem that I encountered with watercolor is that when you put the water on it will deform the paper so I learned this trick where I wet the paper first and and I'll let it dry and then that way when I go to put watercolor on it it will have still absorb some of that water so it won't deform as bad another trick I learned is if you use the painting tape and you just tape it down to the table until it dries that also works but if I'm doing a big project then I will do both of them and even if I do both of these steps if it still turns out to be a little bit deformed I will let the other side of the paper and tape it down to the table cuz that will help reshape it that way either way if you want loose or tight you still have a nice flat sheet piece of paper and that way when you do paint on it you won't accidentally make it deform

that must be why I hated watercolors so much when I was in school. I always liked bright, bold lines with dark or bright colors to match, having control over where the colors go and being able to take it back when I didn't like it. I like watercolor pencils now because I love the gradient effect when water is added, but can keep the sharp lines where I want them

Yes! Thank you for talking about this! I’ve always used watercolours in a very tight way and whenever I tell people I paint with watercolours they expect it to look loose because that’s what most people think of when they think of watercolour paintings.

Watercolor is all about stains and bit trying to hide the edges of it. Look at how cezanne used watercolor, that is how it is supposed to be. Large stains of color that carry importance and then transparently layered. Or look at Martha Jungwirths watercolors for a contemporary approach

As someone who LOVES painting I feel embarrassed to say…. I’ve never even heard of the loose painting….

"Normally done" is about as accurate as saying "oil paint is normally applied with a lot of impasto"... no... it's just one of the many normal everyday, regular techniques.
