Tanya and I take a trip to Balmoral - King Charles' Scottish country residence - via a lovely drive across the Cairngorms.
Here I paint a beautiful bridge and river scene at the entrance to the castle on the River Dee.
It was a fast flowing river so the mic picked up the background noise of the water rushing past so the humming noise during the painting is not a faulty microphone 😊
The paper is Fabriano Artistico size 20" x 13"
Here is the video of my usual watercolour plein air equipment

When one is enthused over your painting and travel scenery the filming could never be too long. I look at a lot of farming vlogs and the optimum for attention span appears to be about 30 minutes. Your enthusiasm and tuitional skill never ceases to be of interest, time goes quickly.

Hi Robert, That’s great to hear. We do wonder whether we’re going on a bit too much. It does make the video longer, having the travel elements, but I think it’s such an important part of the painting process as well, trying to find the scene. Best wishes, James

Wonderful painting and to watch it unfold too. An hour seems about right. You queried the use of yellow. It looks spot on to me, leads the viewer right under the bridge trees and fields beyond. Then again what do I know, as you reached the nearside of bridge, I was counting how many bricks I had to paint in, Impressionism not being my strong point. But I'm trying!

Hi Lyn, Glad you enjoyed the painting video so much. It’s a very interesting challenge not painting detail. Sometimes the desire to paint detail is so overwhelming and it’s difficult just to simplify. It does take a while to really understand the process and to get it right but I think it’s a worthwhile goal. Keep going.! Best wishes, James

Hi Darcy, It really was quite a complicated painting, there was so much in it. We all have the same problem of the painting not looking very good for such a long time and I find it it’s just a question of hanging in there and keep on going. It’s very easy just to stop! Most of the time we should keep on going regardless of how you think the painting is progressing. You never know you might surprise yourself! I look forward to hearing how your painting progresses. Best wishes, James

With a longer painting, you can always skip forwards if one part is not of interest, and it’s better to have the footage there than not, in my opinion. I get irritated by the speeded up and heavily edited videos that are on instagram. Thank you for the time and effort you have both put into producing this.
