Watercolour texture tricks and techniques can add energy and excitement to your paintings, whether as part of the focus or in the background, so I share 27 ways of creating interesting marks and textures, and also a new way of saving this tool kit, so that you can refer to it all the time. Salt, plastic wrap and printing, alcohol, bubble wrap and sponging - we cover them all.
This is one of my most comprehensive films to date, so grab a cup of tea, you might need it!!
I have always encouraged my students to create reference sheets of the different texture techniques, but they are a pain to carry around, however Gill (THANK YOU GILL!) came up with a brilliant idea at a workshop last week. Create a tiny concertina book to put all the textures in... I've taken this further and will show you how to create a mini concertina book out of a single piece of watercolour paper - no gluing involved (unless you want to). I do give you a few options to 'pimp' your sketch book with covers and pockets. Then I take you through 27 different techniques for creating contemporary and exciting textures in your work.
I also give you a few warnings! It is not as straight forward as many people would have you believe.
There's an awful lot in this film, so grab a notebook and pen, you will learn lots!
You can find my previous films on other texturing techniques here, for more detail and tips:
Salt: • How to use salt with w...
Plastic wrap: • How to use plastic wra...
Alternatives to plastic wrap: • What can I use instead...
Spatter: • Watercolour splatter t...
Colour sanding: • COLOUR SANDING - use w...
Granulation: • Top tips for granulati...
If you don't want to know about making your own mini concertina sketch book, from a single sheet of paper, just jump to 10 minute 13 seconds and you will be straight into the technique. But why would you not want to make such a gorgeous little book??? Scale it up and you can easily make a journal or en plein air sketch book.

Most paper towel brands have some sort of pattern in them, either floral or just a basic little grid-type indentation. I have used that for texture as well. It is subtle, but sometimes that is what a person wants.

I had made a larger book without covers (I was too lazy to do that), and it's okay. I like this idea though of making one for texture samples. It keeps them all in one place, easy for quick reference. I may try that again. Good idea.
