Wow, thank you! That's really nice to hear. Not sure about the professional part, I'm just a guy with an inexpensive camcorder in my living room, but it means a lot. I'm certainly going to try! Should have more content out this week... am aiming for at least 1 video a week.

Hey mate, just subbed as I am very keen to see your painting series. I have one of these on order and will be painting. I'm a fairly new painter so I just use acrylic craft paints on my minis, but I'd like to hear what paints you think might be good for this set. Also any ideas on how to simulate some of the translucent effects on the standard mini's? I'd rather have flying swords than swords on black stands.

Thank you for the sub!! I'll get to the painting videos soon, promise, but I just had a baby so this week has been bust :p as for paints, Army Painter is what I generally use - in fact they do a D&D range of paints! Transparent effects aren't easy to do, so my suggestion would be to paint them black.

Definitely interested in hearing more about this board game. In particular, I'm interested in knowing how the difficulty compares with ToEE and Castle Ravenloft. I enjoy these games, but find them so difficult that it really takes away from the enjoyment. I don't expect (or even want) to win all the time. That would be pointless, but I had to play Adventure 2 in ToEE over 10 times before winning once. (Note that I closely follow the rules and don't invent house rules to make the game play easier, and I don't mix pieces between the various games.) So I'm curious if the default "out of the box" experience is any easier. It seems like they have been too focused on inventing new ways to punish and kill you, and not really giving any concern for helping you stay alive long enough to finish an adventure. So hopefully this game is different. I sprung for the Premium version but still haven't played with it as I'm still working on ToEE.

First and foremost, Dungeon of the Mad Mage is probably the most challenging of the Adventure System games. It's not cheap, like Castle Ravenloft (which simulated difficulty with buckets of harsh encounter cards), but it's certainly a challenge. Of these newer games (the WizKids line) I'd say Tomb of Annihilation is probably the easiest, then Temple of Elemental Evil, and then Dungeon of the Mad Mage. That said... there is some pretty powerful items, spells, and hero powers in here too, not to mention the 3rd and 4th levels you can now reach. My suggestion would be to grab Tomb of Annihilation, and wait to play Dungeon of the Mad Mage (or for it to go cheap) if the challenge is going to lessen your enjoyment of the game.

Thanks for the reply. I already got Dungeon of the Mad Mage because I wanted to get the Premium version for the painted figures. A bit disappointing to hear that they've made it harder ... as I can't even fathom how they expect people to get through these campaigns as it is. Without stacking the deck (taking out the hardest monsters/encounters), or inventing house rules to make things easier, or using 3+ Healing Surges ... the game just doesn't feel possible. I've played ToEE using 1, 2, 3, and now 4 Heroes ... and everything is just stacked so heavily against you that you can't stay alive. "Attack each hero", "Each hero takes 2 damage", "Attack your hero twice", etc... The compounding nature of monsters/encounters makes it impossible if you don't get extremely lucky with dice rolls and card draws.

Well, my wife and I have played all 6 with 2 Heroes, and sometimes an adventure beats us, but we've always managed to complete the games. We play "by the book" as well. One thing to keep in mind when playing these campaigns... if you lose an adventure, you restart but get to keep treasure and take town actions. So eventually you'll build up enough gold to buy another advancement, level up, or grab that awesome sword.

Yeah, I am playing through ToEE using campaign rules. I will say that a rule I have for myself is that if I make a mistake during the game, and can't recover from it, I scrap the game and start over. Like I will get to the Air Elemental, and realize I haven't drawn an Encounter for the last 3 Heroes ... because they haven't been exploring ... and there's no way to think backwards far enough to fix it, so I just write off the game and start over. I also started over from the beginning when I realized that a Hero couldn't have more than 2 of the same monster in play at the same time. Somehow I overlooked that rule in Castle Ravenloft, and played through several games of ToEE before I noticed that rule in the ToEE Rulebook. So I scrapped my campaign and started over.

A single Hero (not player) can only have 1 of any individual Monster type in play ;) not 2. That might help a little, especially when you get to the Experience 3 Monsters. "If you draw a Monster card that matches a Monster you already control, discard that Monster card and draw again."

Damn, I have WoA and ToA, but I reaaaly want to have Mad Mage and ToEE, my local board game store sold them out unfortunately :(

What do you think is the best D&D board game to combine with Mad Mage in terms of compatibility?
@ryanhall12022 жыл бұрын
Maybe a dumb question, but what were the incorrect stats on the two cards you showed?

This or Tomb of anihilation? :)
@TheWysardsTower5 жыл бұрын
The answer to that is purely subjective, and that's not just a cop out answer. ToA is jungle themed, DotMM is dungeon themed. ToA has lots of "natural" enemies and undead, while DotMM has a whole range of monsters. DotMM is also more challenging, and you can level your heroes up to 3rd and 4th levels (with expert powers). Both games are good, but DotMM just edges ahead for me because of it's monster variety, setting, and difficulty.
@RiffLair5 жыл бұрын
@@TheWysardsTower Yeah. Raptors did not do it for me to be honest. Ill w8 and get DotMM then. I heard bout print errors tho :/
@TheWysardsTower5 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of errors, but only a couple of things (highlighted in this video) that can't be fixed by the up coming errata. The overall experience is amazing, but can absolutely understand if someone wants to wait and see if they'll be a second printing.
