If I recall correctly, a primary difference in the Middle from the Old Guard is that the former wore a shako and the latter a bearskin. Are the headswaps provided in the box something to do with that? If so, the numbers seem quite low. Or is it just command figures that need changing?

I think it was different at Waterloo, I think the latter two battalions (of four) of Grenadiers and Chasseurs were classed as the Middle Guard and they wore bearskins without the front brass plate (according to Cent-Jours), whereas the Young Guard wore the Shako.

You may well be right. My primary interest was 1812 and after that things are hazy. But, what are the headswaps for? Just to create variety?
