Wow, thanks very much Cheryl! I’m intrigued and very flattered: how did you use this in a class? I’ve never been that confident in my singing. But that’s never stopped me trying. I’ve really had to work at it over the years.

I guess I called it a class because no one had heard the song and I felt like a teacher (we are a bunch of 55+ers and much older...but the Kinks??? C'mon now! We are actually a group here in Az that get together once a week to practice. Used your youtube on my phone to have them listen to the song and then used your hard copy version as it contains some chords and instruction that are lacking in other on-line versions! Keep up the good work!! Love your song choices!

@@cherylpalen1112 I’m a 55+er too! 😃 Yes, I think The Kinks were much more popular over here than in the US. Some Brits rate them above The Beatles. Anyway, it’s great to know that you’re singing about the ‘dirty old river’ Thames over in Arizona (it’s not too dirty anymore). I have a friend in Clarkdale Az. Are you anywhere near there?

Thanks very much Bill! Whereabouts in the world are you? I think some of The Kinks songs at that time were a little too 'English' for some overseas listeners. They were banned from touring the US during the 1960s (refused permits by the American Federation of Musicians) and began looking inward, writing songs with quite an English flavour. If you don't know it already, I'd highly recommend their album 'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society'.

@@JezQuayle Hey Jez, thanks for the Kinks record recommendation. I'm in the middle of the USA in Wisconsin. After their early "British Invasion" hits we didn't hear anything until "Lola" and " Celluloid Heroes". Now with all the streaming music I've discovered a lot of your music for the first time. Imagine, not a single record by the Merseybeats ever charted here. Never heard of them, now it's like living the Brit Invasion all over again. It's true for music from each decade following. Great fun! Especially for those of us with ukes looking for songs to play! Keep posting your versions. You do them well! And I'll try and play along...

If you like the Merseybeats, then you'll probably like The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Rocking Berries, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and The Dreamers, The Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, The Liverbirds and The Fourmost -- maybe there are some names you haven't heard of amongst these? It's interesting that you mention the 'British Invasion'. Last Thursday evening a couple of friends and I linked up with The Turlock Sunshine Strummers (a mostly uke group/club based in California) via Zoom from my home in Yorkshire, England. We performed a set of 'British Invasion' songs so participants could strum and sing along with us.
