Love the recall of days truly not that LONG ago. My granny was born 1896. I was born late 1955. My Granny (in the 1960's) refused to change her clothes if the T.V was on. "Not in front of that man" on T.V. she would argue! Today in my later years...I think Granny had a vision of days to come. She was a lady ahead of her time! ❤ Thank you Tipper as always for your Friday book reading. Love every minute of it! 🙂

I just love your readings. It soothes the soul. I remember dad getting on the roof to adjust the antenna and yelling down " is that it", "which way" and " how about now". That is so funny to think about.

My granddad drew a compass in the attic and had his Yagi antenna pointed towards Charlotte. Brought in ALL stations from Charlotte and even WHKY TV14 in Hickory. We also got a few of the stronger stations from Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point. Of course that antenna being under the roof has been useless ever since we replaced the original shingled roof with a metal one!

Love these "stories"! I was 9 years old the first time we visited my Grandma in Europe. It was my first experience with an outhouse. You had to walk past her hog pens on the way, and in the dark, with the noises those hogs made, the imagination would just run wild. Grandma never allowed the kids to install indoor plumbing. We even had to walk down to the "village square" to fetch buckets of water from the well. It was the way it had always been for her, and no one was going to change it.

That’s what my momma called it, “ her stories”. What fond memories. After my parents retired my momma used to say my daddy wouldn’t ever come in the den to talk to her until her “stories” came on! She watch all the ABC soaps but General Hospital was her favorite. It’s was several years after she passed that I could watch them but now I watch GH all the time! Thanks for the memories! And oh my, I remember those huge console TV’s; we had at least 2 and antennas and we had to go outside and turn it and had the window open to hear the person inside call out instructions to the antenna turned!

I love this book, it hits so many memories for me. I spent my first 2 yrs on my grandparents farm in the mountains, they had a double seatter also how rich they were lol a pump at the sink. They never had TV just a radio. Granny & PA would get to watch TV when they would come to visit and Granny always had to watch her stories when she came. They never did have a bathroom in their house either. Oh those wonderful simple times. Thank you Ms. Tipper for the stories you tell I appreciate them and look forward to every Friday 👍 😀

I love this part of the book. When we would visit my Aunt Mary on vacation, in Tennessee, we would play in the barn. We had a blast playing in the hay. There wasn’t any farm land or barns on the coast of Florida, where we lived. She and my Uncle Ray had a huge back porch and we would lay on our belly’s and catch doodle bugs in the dirt. I don’t watch very much tv these days but I remember always having a tv when I was a child. My daddy always watched Huntley and Brinkley on the news every night after he got off work while mama was putting supper on the table but other than that, we watched Captain kangaroo, the Mickey Mouse club, and on Friday nights after we did the grocery shopping ,my sister and I would make ham sandwiches and crush our Lays potato chips in between the ham sandwich and watch the Wild Wild West. Those were the good old days. Y’all have a great weekend. Hugs from the southeast coast of Florida.😎🦩🌞🦩😎

Such a loaded section of memories. I loved his descriptions of the outhouse controversy, the barn with its many purposes (including sheltering family), and the wonders of early televisions. What excellent details! I grew up on black and white movies and shows. We still watch ‘what’s my line’ & Sergeant York is one of our family favorites! ♥️ I tell my son, if you meet a girl who really loves good old movies, there’s something to getting to know her a little better. 😉

My great grandmother, born in the late 1880's, once asked how they got all those little people inside of a television. She also told about being terrified during her first car ride going over 10 miles per hour. I feel fortunate to have memories of her while she was still alive in the early 1970's.

My grandma Myrtle had an outhouse until the 80s. We were always afraid of snakes and waspers when we had to go out there. I am glad I had that experience though. It makes you very grateful and appreciate things more. We always washed in the tin tub. Grandma had running water, but not a bathroom. Not taking a bath was not an option. It all seemed such an adventure when you are young. The barn story makes me so happy too. My first cousin’s momma’s family had a huge barn. We loved jumping down into the haystacks. It was our favorite place to play. I was so blessed to have the childhood that I was given. I am kind of like George Bailey… I really have had a wonderful life.

I was 5 yrs old when we got our first TV back in 1961! I was shocked at what it was and a lil bit scared of it. I really did'nt know what it was. I thought something was wrong with the people and that they'd come out and get us. I had no idea what a tv was. I had never seen one before in my life. We had an Outhouse up until I got married at 16 yrs old. Only person I knew that had an inside bathroom was my Grandmaw. We'd get in trouble when we went to visit her for playing with it by flushing it over n over! We was Amazed but alil scared that the swirling water was gonna suck us down into that little hole! Lol 😂 I still laugh at that! We got our tails tore up for it. Those were the days! Thank you Tipper. I love these old stories n memories! God Bless. 🙏❤

I am so thankful for indoor plumbing. My mother was 13 before she had plumbing or electricity. I have never even lived without a dishwasher. We had one that you had to roll over to the sink and hook up to the faucet. She wanted all the conveniences possible inside because she loved spending her time outside whenever possible.

No door from the house. Her medicine cabinet was full of stuff that I had only seen in antique stores. Don't ask about the mercurochrome.

I really like this chapter. Enjoyed memories of how tv evolved. My dad and his cousins talk of when their Grandpa got his first tv. They (and a bunch of neighbors!) would all go to his house to watch wrestling. I remember the b&w, and for a while we only got 1 channel when i was young. My paternal grandparents stayed with using an outhouse til late 1970's early 80's. Finally got one built into the backporch, also. Just like a lot the other readers, listening to you read Dels memories, and talk about yours, makes me feel right at home :)

Chinquapin Eyes, Another great memory-provoking story. I grew up in a cotton mill shotgun "L-Shaped" house. First we had a small toilet room on the back porch. When you sat on the tall seat you could hear the water pumping into the "closet" and when you got up there was a tremendous flush. At about the age of 10, (1954) my Dad made the whole porch into a bonified bathroom complete with a tub. We went to a Pentecostal Church (Church of the Living God) that if you had a TV in your house you could not be a member. I watched a lot of your mentioned shows through our fence and the neighbor's house who left the window open so I could see their TV. I had a friend who postponed their wedding when the midgets were wrestling on TV that Saturday afternoon. My wife who lived on the Levisa River at Conaway, VA told me of her Aunt Florence having the only TV for miles and every Saturday night locals brought food and drink to watch those shows. I really enjoyed this reading & all of his memories. It sounds like I must be close to Dales age, from the names of the tv programs he spoke of. He might be a little older than me. But most of the programs, I was very familiar with. I wish tv was still as innocent today. Television got so bad that I got to the point that I no longer wanted to watch anything & I got rid of it. I haven’t watched TV in at least 8 years now. I watch this on my phone & a few other KZfaq channels. There’s some wonderful Christian music on KZfaq that I enjoy listening to. I also love watching channels that discuss herbs & natural remedies. But, I am thankful that I didn’t grow up with outside toilets. When I would visit someone’s house that had one, I was scared to death that a snake would come up out of the hole. Not a pleasant thought!

Oh my, so many memories were triggered...we had a big family reunion in the mid-60's in West Virginia, outhouse and all, in rattlesnake country! There was a hand pump in the kitchen for water. Us kids had fun catching crawdads in the creek...in spite of the warnings! Poison ivy for toilet paper didn't work out well for my cousin, who was allergic and I wasn't...🥴 We were visiting them in Southeast Kentucky so I didn't get to see her for the rest of the visit.... bless her heart, she was confined to her bed and I could only imagine her torment...it still makes me cringe 😬 Thanks Tipper for keeping wonderful memories alive for us older folks 🤗❤️

Still so enjoying your reading on Fridays. Went to visit hubby at rehab and by the time I got home my spine was really hurting. I propped myself up with pillows and was thankful I had this to listen to. When I was growing up, we had a 2-seater outhouse. I don't remember ever having toilet paper, but definitely had the Sears & Roebuck catalog!! We didn't have an actual indoor bathroom until I was 13! I remember mama heating water on the wood cookstove and pouring it into a large zinc tub for me and my sister to bathe in. Mama made lye soap to use to wash with & wash our hair. Daddy also had a barrel to catch rain water in & we would sometimes use that for bathing. TV was a big thing when we finally got one! I remember daddy putting an antenna on the roof of the house and how hard it was to adjust it if it needed to be. We basically only got 2 stations for years, but I remember coming home from school & mama & daddy were watching "Days of Our Lives"! Mama called it her story!! I did a cake shaped like the A-Team van for our son when he was about 5 or 6! He loved that show! As always, Tipper, thank you for helping me get thru another painful, sleepless night! I always look forward to yours & the girls videos! Love & blessings from VA! 📖🙏

Jack Benny's comedy was genius. Not my generation either but it is so timelessly hilarious. One episode someone said Jack sharpens his pencils in front of the fireplace so as to not waste the wood. He was always looking for side jobs and ways to make money even though he was rich.😂 He is right about Andy Griffith being better in b&w. It is mind-boggling how quickly technology has moved. I am not going to say advanced because not all of it is for the good. Have a great week!

I can remember using the outhouse at Granny and Pawpaw’s house. Even after they got indoor plumbing, PawPaw would only use the bathroom at the outhouse. As long as I can remember, they only washed off and didn’t use a tub for bathing. And if I need to bathe, you could only put a couple of inches of water in the tub. They were very conservative with water usage.

Hey Tipper, here is 2 for you. First is, in middle school in 1994 I made a new friend and they did not have an indoor toilet, they still used an outhouse. These people were the kindest, most down to earth caring type people. And yes I used it many times when I went over and played. They lived there up until 2000 I think and county bought the property. 2nd is on TV. My aunt introduced me to the Ma & Pa Kettle movies from the 40s, I love them still, it's very wholesome family type movies, if you have never seen them, please take a look! Also I used to watch late night TV in my aunt's basement as I remember watching Milton Burle television programs.

I recall if our TV was on the fritz, having a portable TV sitting on the top until my folks could afford to either get it fixed or save up for a new one. Must be a red neck!😊

My dad would tease Mother about her soaps during my school days. I was really surprised when I came home from college to discover he was hooked, too. Of course he, jokingly blamed Mother for that happening!

I remember when I was first starting in nursing, that my older patients would say "I got to go outdoors!" I never knew what that meant, so they would say "My kidneys has to act." An older nurse finally told me that the patient was trying to tell that he or she needed to go to the bathroom.

My dad's brother had no indoor bathroom nor tub until 1993. My grandma on mom's side had an outhouse until she died. Dad built her a bathroom with a tub and it was never used. I was 11 when she died. It use to scare me to death because of spiders. We always had indoor plumbing and bathroom. I loved those old days.

Tipper when you were talking about the TV with the screen rolling, I was picturing the theme song of "Rawhide" 🤣 It would certainly give animation to the part "rolling, rolling, rolling"!

Tipper this chapter reminds me so much about my Grandma's old place. I remember being told to watch out for snakes no matter if it were in the sandbox or the outhouse. I remember back when I was about about 4 or 5 and there was a tornado coming and we quickly went down to our Grandma's house to get into her celler with her. I remember my Parents always telling us that when we get inside the cellar, to not touch the shelves that lined the steps because they may have snakes on the canning jars. I always thought Mom and Dad was just trying to scare us. Fast forward almost 50 years, Grandma and her house are long gone and I was visiting the City and decided to stop by and see what was there now and I spoke with the new owners. The young Lady proceeded to tell me stories about how they had a concrete driveway poured (and she showed me where) and she said the night after they poured it, rattle snakes started coming up OUT OF THE CONCRETE! They said they killed as many as they could, and decided to extend the driveway as well as add more concrete to the existing pour and even more came out. She said they called someone to come take a look at it and they were told that they were obviously living on top of a rattle snake nest underground. So all those stories about Grandma finding rattle snakes everywhere, in the house on her stovetop, in the garden, in the sandbox, in the outhouse...ect were all true. I had forgotten about all of that until you were reading about the outhouses. Geeze Louise, these people lived hard....bless their hearts.

My dad told me about using the outhouse at his mother's parents' house in Iowa. They also used the Sears Roebuck catalog instead of toilet paper. My dad said it was okay until you got to the shiny pages. They finally got indoor plumbing after my father's grandmother had a stroke and couldn't make it out back. But my father's grandfather wouldn't use it. He said it wasn't manly.

Del's childhood was similar to mine, but we did get a bathroom. And the shows he watched were the same ones I watched, except the wrestling. I especially loved Rocky and Bullwinkle and Kukla, Fran and Ollie. Fran was the puppeteer, and Kukla and Ollie were puppets, along with Lambchop, her little lamb hand puppet.

Oh wow, I think almost everything he mentioned, I remember…my grandparents did not have indoor plumbing…had to go outside to the water well, with a bucket on a rope, let it down in the well, fill water then crank it to get it back up..that water was always cold and so good….I didn’t do much of that, mostly my aunt & 2 uncles that were still at home did it..they had a 2 seater outhouse…with the sears & robuck catalog & Montgomery Wards catalog for wiping…I hated it but you did what you had to…at night we had a “slop jar”….when we were out playing in the woods, we had been taught the right leaves for wiping..poplar and sycamore had the largest leaves….lol.. I remember they got the first tv in the area (before mama & daddy did0….I think I remember every show Dale mentioned..loved Roy Rodgers & Dale Evans…Gene Autry I even got a cowboy outfit for Christmas one year (I was about 5 or 6) I loved it, had the hat & gun belt with cap pistols…some other great shows back then were……Lassie, The Real McCoy’s both awesome shows..after I was older I love Dick Clark show & Ed Sullivan …I remember sitting as close to the tv as mama would allow me to to watch Ed Sullivan introduce the Beatles…I was hooping & singing…both my parents thought I had gone mad….lol..I still watch Andy Griffith…I like all of them, black and white and color❤ Thank you for reading this great book ❤

We were out for a Boy Scout campout when, sadly, poor Bryan Byrd did use poison ivy when he visited the woods that night. None of us laughed at him. It's unusual when a group of teenage boys shows compassion; but we left Bryan with his dignity. (And some awful pain, I'm sure)

Growing up in Australia during the 1960s lots of people still had an outhouse or dunny. Sunday nights at Nanny’s. After dinner I needed to go to the toilet, Mum took me out in the darkness with just a torch. Half way through my business I was lifted up by Mum who was yelling snake snake!

What a distance from Deuteronomy 23:13 And you shall have a spade among your tools, and it shall be when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and shall turn to cover up your excrement. I've labeled todays new vehicle color shades of non metallic greens or greys... As ''Turned Off Tv Screen Green''. Watermelon Hill's one of those books you just can't put down for the sake of content or authorship. Thank's for sending the viewers fond memories back into a simpler time of clarity.

When I was a child our toilet was at the bottom of the garden and you had to go down with a torch. I can only remember the Izal toilet paper which was great for tracing paper and playing the comb and paper but left much to be desired for its original use. In winter when it was very cold a little parafin burner was lit to stop the pipes freezing and it made it quite pleasant to sit there. We didn't have a t.v. till I was about 9 years old as we couldn't afford it but then along came hire purchase. Yes they were big in those days and you could put things on top. Now of course, they are flat screens and you can put them on a wall. Things have changed quite rapidly and some things you miss but others are best left to memory. It will be another week of no gardening as it just doesn't stop raining and it is not very warm either. Have a good week.
