3 жыл бұрын

Entry number 47 to my top 50 list of the most underrated, underappreciated and/or unknown guitar solos of all time. Today with the Zappa classic Watermelon in Easter Hay.
As per usual, a performance of the solo (In this case the whole instrumental) followed by a few of my thoughts, on the solo or the artist who originally performed it.
Hope you like this one. One of my favorite pieces of music in the whole world.
Cheers, Kelly

@@AZmic69 I'm so happy that Zappa chose to include in his vast repertoire a song that tugs on the heart strings. Music has always been very emotion-evoking for me, and Zappa one of my favorite composers. My dad introduced me to his music when I was 5. To not have a Zappa tear-jerker would have been so unfortunate. Thank you Frank!

That was fantastic, very nice job. Back in the day a friend and I would play a drinking game called "guitar wars" whereas one would try to top another with a selected guitar solo; with the loser downing their entire beverage. That was easily 30 years ago. Whenever I would eventually dig out Easter Hay he would just drink, not even bothering to try to top it, all the while bitching about how I always head to the top of the pile for my pick, blah blah blah. Ha! This brought back some memories! Excellent execution here, and I would say you dialed in that sound very very well. Thanks for the memory jogger, and again very nice job!

@KellyDeanAllenGuitar
@KellyDeanAllenGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
I learned it by ear and played it in C# minor. I just looked it up and The Frank Zappa guitar book says that it's actually in E Mixolydian. But one can play the E Major scale (in this case the relative minor would be C# which I played) over it and it still sounds bitchen.
@Pedro_MVS_Lima
@Pedro_MVS_Lima 3 жыл бұрын
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar It sounds E ionian to me (try the Emaj7 chord, E7 doesn't seem to fit, and it isn't a lydian sound either), but you are right about the relative minor of E major being C#.

I'm a pretty hardcore Zappa fan and I'd agree with your assessment for the most part, but when you're talking about "beautiful," there's a context involved. For example, I'd consider "Blessed Relief" off of The Grand Wazoo, to be equally as beautiful in its own right, but not in the same way. As for this song, I think you're right about why he named it that. lol By the way, great cover. Tone was impeccable.

Frank was capable of creating beautiful songs, only that usually he didn’t want them to be that way and there is a video on youtube of zappa pianist George Duke talking about it. Some of zappa songs I consider beautiful are whats new in baltimore, the black page piano version and sofa no 1. By the way love your playing and your commentary, very inspiring.

It's an excellent job Kelly, and it's interesting that it so strongly reinforces that I respect Frank so much... his thoughts, his ideas, his innovativeness... but the product always just leaves me blank. I keep expecting something to happen in this tune and it never happens. could be I'm just too conventional. I don't understand exactly what I'm waiting for and why it doesn't happen but the worst thing I can say about this probably is that it sounds a lot like me sitting noodling on the guitar and going nowhere.... Doesn't make me angry, it just leaves me cold, and I wonder, as I often do, whether I'm missing something that I could enjoy if I could just find the right way to wrap my head around it.

For me, it's more so the song itself within the context of the whole triple album. Or in the context of Zappa's works. Or within everything (not to sound pretentious). The song itself is the "something" that "happens." Because I'll agree, there is essentially no progression within the song. Some new instruments get added in, the guitar goes from clean to driven, and it alternates between composed and improvised. But that's it. I usually don't seek out songs that don't change ("jam" music I guess), but if the song somehow feels connected (or contrasting) to something beyond itself (even if that's just the few songs before/after it), then that changes things. What it is that makes the connection depends on the song. In the case of Watermelon in Easter Hay, it's that it's so different, more relaxed, and more "beautiful" (should you perceive it that way) than its context.
