Wood actually absorbs the varnish and with dried clay the varnish stays on the surface, making it very strong. So i think other varnish will also work, just make sure you apply enough coatings and each coat let it fully dry. But good job making it waterproof.

Thanks for ur comment, I did find that it left what seemed like a wax coat, but its been outside in rain since I put the video up a few days ago and it's still waterproof, might try different wood varnishes to see what difference they make x

Folks, if you use yacht varnish on an object made of air dry clay, the best way to paint it on is the paint it from side to side and allow that layer to dry completely. Then once it's dry, paint the next layer on it, painting it on from the front to the back, to ensure you cover every inch of the clay. I have used yacht varnish on air dry.clay, and sadly I missed a section when I painted it, so the moisture got in under the varnish and the item became distorted. Since that happened, I always add 3 coats of the varnish to my creations before I put them outdoors. Also, ensure that if the item gets scratched or damaged, that you give it another two or more coats of the varnish. That's what works for me. Hope that helps!

This was actually super helpful! I have started to propagate some plants and I was not able to find any pots ANYWHERE, so I looked into using cement but it seems like it's really bad for the environment. My next option was air dry clay! I am going to see if I can make it waterproof enough for a plant pot. Thank you again for doing this experiment because I wasn't able to find much info on it.

The reason yacht varnish is best is because it allow water resistance as well as UV protection, this allows for flexibility with cracking along with the waterproofing, so i would advice looking for something water resistant, UV protection and for exterior use - although not the brand i use here is a link to information about ingredients withing the varnish so that you can research any DIY options www.wood-finishes-direct.com/datasheets/ronseal-yacht-varnish/SDS-Ronseal-Yacth-Varnish.pdf

Hi there, I'm currently making a "flower vase" with air hardening clay. I was wondering if I can do this waterproofing on the inside of the vase, in order to put real flowers instead of just fake ones, OR if I should put a resin coat inside of it (like I've read in some forums) ? x

Hi thankyou for ur comment, i couldnt tell you anything about the resin as it isnt something that i have tried myself, although i have like you heard some things about it, the yacht varnish i have used as only been used on garden ornaments that have taken on the heavy Yorkshire rain over the last year and they are still going very strong and are still waterproof but they have not been submerged like a vase would be, i know if it was me and i didnt have time to experiment i would probably do both by putting on a yacht varnish first then a resin and see how that would go, im sorry i couldnt be more help, good luck with your project x

hi, thankyou for your comment, i know the yacht varnish as held up really well with the cold weather we have had here in Yorkshire (UK), although i do believe for it to maintain full waterproof a quick touch up yearly will be required (as with most painted garden features) i do not believe the varnish will have any effect on any type of plant you place in the pot you have varnish once it as dried, the fairy houses that i have made have been up close to many plants and flowers and have had no effect on them, just don't allow wet varnish to touch them wait until fully dry before planting x

hi, I'm looking for videos on glazing, I was looking at just using a clear lacquer and then I saw that crayola glaze, (it's for new born imprints on air clay so staying indoors) what would you recommend? would clear spray just peel off? As I don't want to loose her prints or the colour our of them. normally I would have gone to glaze pottery place and have them done with clay that goes in the kiln but then covid decided to happen 😭 my OCD can't handle one set being matte and one set being shiny 🙈

Hi Malika, for my indoor sculptures because they don't required waterproof, but i want them to be strong and retain their color from the paints i use a clear wood varnish that has polyyurethane in it, this gives it strength and doesn't allow the paint to fade or get sun bleached x

Hi, new subscriber. I am making a piece for inside a snow globe. Which will have to be waterproof. Could you give me a bit advice on which clay to use and what to do when made to waterproof it, as its the first time doing this and havent got a clue. Thanx. Luv from Newcastle upon tyne x
@ManicCreationsChannel
@ManicCreationsChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynne, firstly thankyou for subscribing to my channel that means alot to me. With regards to your question, with the snow globe being submerged in liquid (technically) i wouldn't advise using air dry clay, i would advise spending the little extra money and time and use a polymer clay for the amount you will use for something that small it won't cost alot especially if you use something to bulk any large areas such as foil, once baked this will automatically become waterproof so you wouldn't have to coat it with anything unless you paint it, if you do paint it then any type of waterproof top coat for the type of paint you are using would be ok. If you are using air dry clay, you might want to set up a trail run, the way i would do this is take a small amount of the clay, give it a coat of paint (the same which you will be using for the globe) then give it a minimum of 2 coats of yacht varnish giving each coat time to dry between each application, then submerge it for a few days to a week and see what happens. When i have used yacht varnish on my outdoor ornaments i have applied acrylic paint and then 2 coats of the varnish, i live in yorkshire so we do get rain alot! my first ever ornament is still in great condition and its been outdoors for over a year and even dealt with the flooding we had last year. hope this answers your question, if you need any help im more than happy to answer any questions you might have. I hope your project goes well! Louise (MrsManic) x

I wonder if you'd be able to seal/waterproof air-dry clay plant pots with this Wilko Yacht Varnish, or would the constant moisture of the soil dissolve it and poison the plant maybe? 🤔 It's super difficult to find something non-toxic and waterproof to seal claypots with without using varnish that needs to be hardened in a kiln 😑
@ManicCreationsChannel
@ManicCreationsChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your comment, I agree that even with the varnish it may not deal well with the constant moisture, you could however keep the plant in a plastic pot and place that inside your clay one so it's not in direct contact with the soil x

@@ManicCreationsChannel That's a pretty straight forward idea I hadn't thought of! 😅 - Apparently, a non-toxic method of waterproofing the inside of terra cotta and air-dry clay pots that people do, is to use liquid rubber that people use for some roofs? It's pretty cheap from B&Q/eBay, but it's like a black goop you paint on, so the inside of you pots or whatever will be permanently black? Thank you for sharing your ideas too! ( ^ . ^ )

@ManicCreationsChannel
@ManicCreationsChannel 4 жыл бұрын
hi, thankyou for your question, tbh i don't think it would work long term as nail varnish products do tend to chip easily, if the item is just needing a top coat for protection for indoor use then it may be ok but for long term exposure to outdoor elements i would stick with the yacht varnish personally, really hope this helps and good luck on your project x

Hi! I wanna ask you, I'm on my project to make a case phone based from the air dry clay. As we know that I assume my customers are bring their phone everywhere and the place that they're going maybe rains or too hot places. My question is, Is it waterproof enough for the casing in case that its rain situation? Do the clay broke? Second is does the air dry clay Broke when its too hot weather? Lastly, how long that i need to wait to that thing absorb fully on my case and becomes waterproof? Thanks

adding a few layers of the yacht varnish would be ok for such a project as im assuming people wouldn't want to submerge their phones, the air dry clay i use which is DAS clay does very well in hot weather, but obviously with all air dry clay the thinner the clay the more brittle and prone to breaking it is, i waited 24 hours between each coat of varnish and gave it 2 to 3 coats in total, i hope i managed to answer all your questions x

Hi Lorraine thankyou for commenting on my video, i agree some varnishes can eventually give off that yellow stain effect, however with this yacht varnish i found that this hasn't been the case and after researching further into it i have found that when looking for the right varnish not only does it need to be water resistant but also UV resistant which alot of normal varnishes aren't, so when looking make sure you go for the water and UV resistance, Happy crafting xx

Never tried yacht varnish but I use DuraClear gloss varnish from DecoArt Americana. It's a polyurethane gloss varnish. It is water based so you can clean your brushes with soapy water. Has a very faint smell of acrylic paint and a little goes a long way. Make sure your clay and paint is completely dry before applying this in thin coats and leave to dry in between coats about 4-5 mins. You can find it on Amazon

thank you for your question, even though the clay would connect to the concrete it obviously wouldn't be as strong and also would depend on what you were repairing, i would advised using concrete but create a really thick mixture and slowly build up the part that needs repairing, with regards to painting it acrylic paints work great as long as you use a good sealant, hope everything goes well with the angel and your cousin likes it xx
