Waterproofing is the process of making an object or structure water resistant so that it remains relatively unaffected by water.
Hi friends in this video, we are going to watch some waterproofing methods on concrete structures
Preparatory works for waterproofing:
1. Surface preparation
Surface to be waterproofed should be clean, sound, dry and free of all contamination such as dirt, oil, grease etc.
All dust, loose particles, slurry etc. should be completely removed.
Undulations (High spots) are cleared by grinding.
Proper Cleaning is done.
2. Crack Treatment
If some cracks are observed, it has to be treated before application of waterproofing layer.
Different crack treatment methods are there according to the severity, location of crack etc.
For example, here we are making V groove along the crack using concrete cutting blade.
And after proper cleaning, it is filled with epoxy grout.
3. Bore Packing
Core cuts made for the provision of plumbing pipes are one of the weakest points where leakages can occur.
Hence, it has to be treated with utmost care.
Bore packing is the process of fixing plumbing pipes in their cut outs / core cuts
Cleaning and roughening of borehole is done and pipes are properly aligned
Formworks are made leak proof for grouting
Grout is mixed properly and is applied
4. Angle Fillet Application
Corners and 90 degree offsets are another major weak points through which leakage can occur.
For all corners and 90 degree offsets, angle fillet at 45 degree angle, are to be made in order to provide uniform transition of waterproofing layer.
The cement mortar, used to prepare the angle fillet, should be mixed with integral waterproofing admixture, so that the angle fillet can act as additional protection, against water entry.
Concrete Waterproofing-Types and Steps:
1. Cementitious Waterproofing
Material consist of 2 parts. One part is higher quality cementitious powder and 2nd part liquid polymer mixed as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
Both of these parts are mixed in the proportion mentioned by the manufacturer.
After the preparatory works, 1st coat is applied
Apply the 2nd coat after the previous coat has dried.
2nd Coat is applied in the crosswise direction of 1st coat for more effectiveness.
2. Polyurethane Liquid Membrane waterproofing
Polyurethane Liquid membrane waterproofing is more premium and efficient type of waterproofing system.
Hence cost will be on the higher side.
After the preparatory works, 1st coat is applied
When it becomes dry, 2nd coat is also applied in crosswise direction
Sand is sprinkled over the 2nd coat in order to enable proper bonding with protection plaster.
Above this, protection layer in the form of plastering, tiling etc. can be done.
3. Bituminous membrane waterproofing
There are 2 types of bituminous membrane
First is Hot applied or Torch applied bituminous membrane.
In this type, after surface preparation, bituminous primer is applied.
When it becomes dry, bituminous membrane is heated using gas torch and applied on concrete surface.
Second one is Cold Applied Bituminous membrane
It is self-adhesive membrane.
Here also after surface preparation, bituminous primer is applied.
When it becomes dry, the plastic foil on the adhesive side is removed and the membrane is sticked, onto the primed surface.
For both types, proper overlaps are provided according to specifications
If its horizontal application, screed concrete, plastering or tiling etc. are done, for protection of membrane and if it is vertical application, plastering, boards etc. are done, for protection of membrane
4.Bituminous coating
They are usually done for, below ground concrete structures for protection, from water
It is applied after the preparatory works
2nd coat is applied in a direction, perpendicular to the 1st coat and is done when the 1st coat becomes dry
5. Liquid Waterproofing
Preparatory works are done
Primer, 1st coat and 2nd coats are done accordingly
Conclusion
Different types of chemicals are available in market made by different manufacturers.
Technical data sheet (TDS) is the document containing all the required details of the product.
Material safety data sheet (MSDS) will provide all details with respect to safety such as hazard information, Precautions of safe handling etc.
