Waterslide Decals on Wood, Metal and Glass. An Alternative to Photo Transfers

We were unable to include waterslide decals in our photo transfers video, so we attempted it for the first time and made a separate video. We used waterslide decals of wood, metal and glass, just as we did with photo transfers.

We clearly need more practice but for a first time, on the spot attempt... we are pleased and the potential for waterslide is great. (I envision a R&J waterslide logo on every picture frame in the house. LOL!!!)

Great video! LOVE how the metal one turned out! We also discovered with the glass that the thickness of the glass will make it look blurry unless the image is put on the back of the glass. We may have to give the waterslide on wood a try! And of course, thanks so much for the shout out! ❤️

Great experiment! I have used lots of waterslide decals in my lifetime and they can be finicky (like the one you had on glass). Keep up the good work!

I actually read your comment on Just Might DIY video when they used waterslide and you made me remember I too used to build tons of models and use waterslide then... on a very tiny scale because I built model aircraft. Between you and the video they made, I had to try it

@@Poor_Mans_DIY thank you for the excellent tutorial. You might have already said this, but if I have painted the wood with acrylic paint, should I seal it before applying the water slide paper? And if so, what kind of sealant? (I am doing wooden circle sliced ornaments…)

We did not mention using a sealant before using waterslide decals and I have to admit we are not experts by any means, however, based on our experiment, I would think using a sealant will provide a smoother surface for the decal. If I may be so bold, you might want to check out our other video on photo transfer to sood, using Liquitex gel. In our opinion, it was much easier to do and the results were better. Print the image in reverse and put it face down and use the backing to smooth it out maybe

Great video, I love your enthusiasm. If you want to see some examples of waterslide on metal then look at guitar effects pedals and motorcycle tanks.

Wow! Great suggestions. It never crossed my mind to look into these options. I have watched people spray paint on water then dip motorcycle tanks through the floating paint and watch it adhere. Looks so cool. Waterslide makes perfect sense as an alternate method. Thank you again for sharing this info

if you seal the decal paper 3 times with rustoleum gloss (must be gloss - works better) 2x clear & place it down & slide paper off - it works much better - the decal doesn't curl up - I do custom tumblers & do this all the time - if you have text make sure to reverse the image for this - the metal & wood turned out great - but like the wood the best - just found your site - thanks for the share

Interesting tinkering well done. I love the wood one. You can do an old looking wood icon with Jesus on it or something using water slide sticker...

Great video, maybe use a sponge as you work, use white background or different colors, and reversing a image on glass is the best, new subscriber here... couldn't sleep so came across you while surfing KZfaq love the channel

Others make it look so easy and we came to realize they make it look easy because they are very good at what they do. Your suggestions seriously make me want to challenge the waterslides again to see if we can improve on our technique and produce a better result. This was a lot of fun. Seeing your results has made me curious about trying this myself. I hope y'all will try the reverse printing for the glass soon. Would love to see how that would turn out. Hmmm,,,I wonder could this be done on clear acrylic or Lexan?

It can totally be done on acrylic, that is how a lot of folks do "badge buddies" for badge reels (like nurse's badges)

I'm thinking to add to galvanized sheeting. How do you think it will last outside as a street sign?

To be totally honest, as the days went by, the waterslide reminded me of the tattoos that were prizes in Cracker Jack boxes. Not great quality. Even with a sprayed coating on top, I suspect it will fade or not last long on the galvanized steel. We used a different technique to transfer a printed image onto glass, wood and metal that we really liked much more. Please forgive me if I misunderstand your comment but we are printing directly on the decal. The white is just backing that is peeled off. If you are referring to printing on matte paper and then transferring the the image from the paper to the wood, that requires a glue that will adhere to the toner on the paper and stick to the wood. We have done a couple videos where we attempted this and we think, using Liquitex gel is the best method for placing an image on wood or metal. At the time I made this video, I used a Canon Color Image Class LBP622Cdw. I no longer have or use it. I use a Brother MFC-J1205W. We wish to thank you for watching our video.

Use a silicone brush to get water and air bubbles from underneath the slide
