You don't have any data with which to compare the reliability of Rosenbauer vs. other brands. All you have is a bunch of anecdotes. People will tell you that KME is junk, E-One is junk, even Pierce lately is junk. The only one of the US custom-chassis brands that never gets dismissed as junk is Seagrave, and then the complaint is that nobody can afford them. Until there is some hard data available for comparing reliability, I don't want to hear about it.

Small example from a city here: they had a 1985 Tanker in service until 2013; It then got replaced by a Rosenbauer AT3 Tanker ... from 2013 to 2016 there were 4 different Tankers in service as some lasted less than a year although running only few calls as it's not a 1st due apparatus. Bad luck? Maybe. I moved to another city, and they replaced their old Rescue Engines by new ones: both AT3 Rescue Engines were back in the repair shop before even being in service. I heard of problems of that extent only from that model, not from other Rosenbauer apparatus, but it seems like also the AT3 got better by now. When scrolling through facebook groups and youtube comments I hardly see someone complaining about e.g. Pierce, E-One or any other American manufacturer, but almost all comments concerning Rosenbauer apparatus are somehow negative ... I have never seen an American Rosenbauer truck by myself, but that opinion must be based on some (negative) experiences, right? Serious question: how do you measure the reliability? Do you look at total numbers or put them in ratio, do you measure driven distance, number of calls, time spent on scene, time of actual on-scene activity like pumping / operating tools / ladder etc, do you rate both the chassis and manufacturer's body system together or only the body system, time until sth needs maintenance and repair, ...? There are so many factors and some of them can't be compared at all. Biggest issues I see when comparing different brands: some bring out an entire truck, some are built on a commercial chassis. Can hardly compare e.g. a Pierce on a Pierce chassis with e.g. a Rosenbauer, which might be on a Mercedes-Benz, MAN etc chassis. Same goes for Aerials...

@@EnjoyFirefighting If you watch a lot of Rosenbauer videos, you will hear a lot of Rosenbauer complaints. But if you lurk on forums and other places where American FFs spend their time, you will hear plenty of complaints about the other brands too. We can easily measure availability as a proxy for reliability. We do this by calculating how many hours per year the truck should be available for calls (all hours in the year - time spent on foreseeable scheduled maintenance during the year). Then we compare that to the actual number of hours the truck was available. Fire departments either do not collect or do not publish this information, so we enthusiasts have nothing to go on.

@@mikegaskin5542 apart from complaints based on actual incidents (like wheels falling off etc) at those brands, I see a negative opinion on Rosenbauer apparatus even without such incidents or problems; Many people have Rosenbroken in their mind even if they didn't work on such a truck so far. Thanks for the insight on measuring the reliability. Makes sense to some point, however I also see one problem: take two apparatus which are in service 24-7 for an entire year. Nr. 1 is a front line apparatus running basically all calls, while Nr 2 runs only few calls. Then apparatus 1 has e.g. 10 technical problems or failures within a year, while apparatus 2 has 10 technical problems as well although running a much lower number of calls, but still being ready at the station 24-7 as well. How do you take that into account? Of course apparatus 2 is less reliable then, but looking only at the time it is available and counting the problems, both would be on the same level, right? Some departments publish quite insightful things, especially in annual reports and townhall discussions. Thus the emergency services in the city where I grew up isn't capable to handle a worst case scenario, that's what they say themselves. The FD has the state's largest station, but some apparatus are simply missing and aren't purchased so far

I mean, in Germany they are quite infamous aren't they? Loads of plastic where Ziegler for example uses more durable materials. Not to mention that all other department I've talked to have had troubles with their Rosenbauers in the past which they didn't with their Zieglers

It's likely that they specced it out that way. They built a quint for Baltimore County, MD about 10 years ago that (1) didn't have enough hose and (2) didn't have enough ground ladders to qualify as a quint by NFPA 1961 specifications, but it was what the department wanted. It even had a seat on the turntable, which is one of the stupidest features to put on a turntable, because you're not going to sit down to move your aerial ladder.

William I have always thought Y don't thay get a SUV. to use on medical calls and respond from medical call to truck for full man power. Only if truck has full crew. I know Departments that use ladder crew to man AID van it responses with all ladder calls.

William Roh I was working the other day and had a call out come out for apartment flooded with water coming out from the sink and Tub and I shit you not they sent one of these to the call I thought we had a fire when I seen it pull up

@@dannyjones4343 Are you aware of the types of equipment that are carried on fire apparatus? Ladders carry a very wide variety, firefighting, salvage and overhaul, EMS, all rescue scenarios. We could perform any type of operation with what we carried on the ladder. EMS normally was done by the engine. But if they were out, we'd get the run. To someone that mentioned running EMS on a small vehicle, the majority of paid departments don't like splitting up the company. Especially in busy districts.

@@rp1645 we hardly have any of the shorter 60 Ladders or Tower Ladders in service any more over here, the most common ones are 105' rear-mount Tower Ladders. Many of the new ones have all-wheel steering already, even some Engines have all-wheel steering and Mobile Cranes do so as well

Agreed on the auto-stow, I can only imagine what damage it would cause if something were to go wrong whilst it wasn't being watched/supervised during it's auto-stow.

Paint issue, wildly inaccurate pump gauges, any number of electrical gremlins, ladder rack lock failures....

@@ericmac564 The rosenbauer rescue pumper my dept. has will occasionally give some ridiculous pump numbers, as well as sometimes the hydraulic connection ports at the front bumper for our hurst tools won't work sometimes. It really hasn't been proving itself to be reliable.

Difference in fire code. In Germany high rises are mandated to have at least two independent protected stairwells, so that you have your first and second escape route without placing a ladder. In the US thats depending on the state/region. Therefore these vehicles are required in some places.

@@breaklux3823 these Tillers reach the same height like the standard Aerial (most are 105' rear-mount Tower Ladders) in Germany; And ground ladders are carried by Engines in Germany, not on Tower Ladders

Tillers typically run as part of a "taskforce" usually with another type 1 pumper, the pumper will "hook" the hydrant, and "supply" the aerial, the 200 gallons is enough to charge the waterway and initiate fireflow as a water supply is established.

Exactly what D Mac said. Those 200 gallons are essentially just to prime the pump, and to start flowing some water. While the truck is being hooked up to a hydrant or another engine.

The rear steering wheels can probably be locked in center alignment for high speeds when maneuverability isn't an issue.

Because the tip load of this ladder is the same at all angles and extentions unlike Euro aerials. Also European ladders have only limited compartment space and zero ground ladders or pumps or a water tank.....and tied spaces in 'merica are not as tied as they are in Europe.

Because american firefighters have different needs and bigger roads. So they can build bigger, carry more equipment and have heavier trucks. Plus an aerial tower without a ladder is no good as a means of escape.

@@dirkjaniak2347 Not quite correct: it simply depends on how the specific FD in Europe specs its Aerials. Some have mid-mounted pumps, some are designed as Quints and thus also carry the full complement of pump, tank and equipment like a normal Rescue Engine. The standard Tower Ladder in Europe doesn't carry ground ladders, that's correct ... in most places these are carried by the Engines, Rescue Engines, Portable Pump Trucks etc

uhm well there are rear-mount Tower Ladders with all-wheel steering, so compared to Tillers which still have one non-stearable axle on the tractor unit, those Tower Ladders can get around corners even easier

Suchitoto El Salvador for the little that costs compared to the rest of the rig is pennies in comparison.

Just like to follow up on my comment.Im not a firefighter but here in suburban Detroit many of our local fire depts have been purchasing Rosenbauer apparatus and from what I've read and heard they are quite satisfied with them! So before any other troll shoots off his mouth get your damn facts straight!, Oh Excuse me Trolls Never deal with facts all they do is spread lies and false information for whatever agenda! In this case against Rosenbauer! And No I don't work for Rosenbauer!

Malcolm Cossar my local a Dept of which many friends work for have had nothing but problems with Rosenbauer. The rigs are out of service more then in service and not to spec. From receiving the apparatus to in service time for them is about a year to fix all the issues.

Because ist seems like only Americans have a problem with Rosenbauer. We have 6 Rosenbauer Trucks since 1997 and they all work fine. There is a reason why they are the biggest.

sometimes being multifunctional is the key ... while our Ladders are kept simple, our Engines are designed very mutlifunctional and basically replace a Heavy Rescue in many situations

Funny how we dumped 1.5 trillion dollars into picking up the stock market for 15 minutes yesterday... But no one asks who pays for it. But if we were putting that in CDC, FDA, or yes, emergency services, everyone gonna cry about taxes. I don't know how much this costs but it the bells and whistles saves 1 more life than the old model, it's worth it. It's still better than the dumb shit we waste taxes on or give too many breaks on.

@@trevmac8362 You lose reach/height distance based on your horizontal distance from the structure. Also, you're hopefully planning on a truck to last 10-20 years down the road. Who knows what structures will be built during that time. The population numbers don't dictate your apparatus needs. Every town around me have @ 100' straight sticks and/or towers. Why? Multi story buildings. Hospitals. Nursing homes. Factories. You name it. That drives your needs.

@@robfish9543 All true and possible but the towns population has only increased by about 2000 people in the last 10 years .The truck seems a little elaborate when they could have bought something that is smaller and just as practical.
