Structured Freeflow is Toru’s concept of freeflow with strategies.
Early in his Watsu career as he practiced in the Spa industry, Toru found struggles with some clients, like getting people dizzy and not being able to make moves because the clients were so rigid. He recognized that this is a common contra-action in Watsu. First, he looked for new moves that solve these problems but soon he realized that moves do not solve problems. Just like Harold Dull said, Doing is not important but Being is. This is a notion from Zen teaching and Toru really digged into it.
Toru concluded that we need a little more than freeflow.
- Session Strategies
- Quality of Touch and Movement
- Assessment and Adaptation
These are what make a difference and make you versatile for any kind of client.
When you complete Watsu 1 and 2, you already know enough moves. But you need to learn how to structure your session according to client types, which he categorizes with TCM 5 Elements. He also categorizes Watsu application in 5 Elements. By applying 5 Elements and listening to the client’s reaction, you will know what Elements the client holds.
As Toru wishes his students never have to face the problems he has had, he teaches these techniques and strategies in his Structured Freeflow class.
Toru says, “Structured Freeflow session is like a story with blank lines. You have a story to tell, but you have to find your lines with the clients.”
