I once spoke in a courtroom after three boys (including my son) were killed in a car crash caused by another teenager in a stolen car. I suggested that the law and courts had failed because this person was a multiple law breaker even at his young age. He had repeatedly been let go with very little time in custody or monitoring or follow up. The judge was furious at me for even suggesting that our system had any responsibility for what had happened. He loudly berated me in the courtroom. Another situation where multiple failures and zero accountability results in tragedy

I've lived in Waukesha for over 30 years and to say the city is in shock is an understatement. My best friends daughter who is 7 narrowly escaped being murdered, she was part of the Girl Scout troop in the parade that scattered just in time. His phone vids are as disturbing as you'd think. Everyone that was there is a victim as far as I'm concerned. My family and I have attended the parade almost every year but thankfully not this year. Hundreds of lives destroyed because of this. Schools were closed all week, I'm still trying to figure out how to explain this my children. Thanks for covering this Doc.

The purpose of bail is to compel people to make their court dates. It is not to be treated as a public safety measure. The problem wasn't that Darrell's bail was too low, it was that they set a bail amount at all. He shouldn't have been released no matter how much money he had.

In my home town we are just waiting for the next election to vote one of our county judges out for practically the same. Well first of all he was investigated for conflict of interest when he was the judge appointed to a DWI case that involved a police officer he personally was friends with and had been with him at a golf event the night it happened. Of course the officer walked scot free. Then he released a man with low bail who had already vandalized 2 business and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage, left behind hate messages, and had been involved in a murder case in the past by being the main suspect. The prosecutors dropped the ball though and they had to drop the charges. But three weeks after the judge let him off with such a low bail and stating he didn’t think holding him was necessary, he murdered another man at a park in such a gruesome way it shook our town because you never hear about stuff like that. He stabbed the poor guy to death then decapitated him and proceeded to play soccer with the mans head, kicking it at cars. I know the sister of his first murder victim and I saw how much it destroyed them when it happened, and then seeing in the news that he had done it again to another person and their family, it was like they were re-victimized. It infuriated the town. They won’t disbar him so all we can do is unite as a community and vote him out. This is why local races matter just as much if not more than the bug presidential vote. It all starts from the community and up.

Excellent breakdown of the rationale behind reduced bail and it's mishandling as well as this guy's extensive criminal history and how political polarization, a biased media and the lack of communication between the legal system and mandated mental health care are contributing to rising violence. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. The judge who gave him bail should bear some of the responsibility for this tragedy. We can only hope that this will force the system to rethink the execution of reduced bail.

As an outsider, it seems easy to improve the bail system by adding 2-3 personnel onto the payroll per city or county. That suggestion alone is when people stop listening, bc it sounds absurd and impossible. Each person should be mentally evaluated by a professional (like Dr. grande) and then evaluated on a socially productive level, such as how a job is affected, family, bills etc. I think these two evals could be determined at an acceptable level to trust that the person will not reoffend. Each would give a score that could affect the $ or no $ of the bond. Obviously never gonna happen but I hate that one side doesn’t want to detain dangerous felons, and now the other side will use this in a campaign to rid any talk of bail reform at all, instead of coming together

Corporate media likes to make us feel divided and to heighten tensions. They think it keeps us tuned in. They're right on that but they've failed to do their due diligence in acknowledging the other side effects of causing copycat crimes, fomenting hatred and anger, inciting violence and causing hopelessness by not following up on stories. Moreover, the corporate media leans too far too the right in favoring big corporate business interests, demonizing working class sand middle class folks for problems that corporations create in the first place. For example, the use of non recyclable materials. There's a reason that our grand parents and parents used glass and metal containers. There's a reason they were more discrete and cautionary in what they discussed. They were wiser in many ways.

What crimes are you using as your proof? White collar crime? Homicides? Police homicides? Criminal negligence? Obstruction of justice? Assaults? Thefts? Embezzlement? Rape? Corruption of minors? Reckless endangerment? DUI? Distribution of narcotics? Manslaughter? What? Such broad generalizations you make only serve to weaken your argument. One thing is for sure, (and this is what the Russian KGB/FSB have been wanting all along) if Americans start to lose faith in their own laws and institutions by infighting and disinformation, there will be an explosion of crime. The support of populist, totalitarian "leaders" who are allowed to get away with crimes will only expedite our demise in the same way Eastern Europe fell to the National Socialist German Workers' Party in the 1930s. Hitler counted on people in their own countries throwing each other under the bus. There were no more bureau of government to protect them. We cannot allow the crimes of our elected officials to be taken lightly. These are atrocious crimes, some worse than the Nazis even committed: insurgency, inciting violence, breaking RICO laws, refusing to acknowledge elections, violating civil rights, ignoring the Constitution, grifting the American people, abusing the American people's trust by not removing the Confederacy based filibuster, etc the average American is going to lose trust in the legal system. This incident was not a "tragedy" at all. To me, a tragedy is an accident, something unforeseen and unexpected, unplanned. This was a planned and executed attack by a terrorist. A shocking act of violence which creates mass divisiveness and social rage, perpetrated by a racist terrorist. The tragedy lies within the act of the murder and maiming of innocents. My heart goes out to all who were injured or killed and their families.

He also framed the Rittenhouse incident as "trying to make the incident about racism, when it was really about the limits of self defense". Which is the least inflammatory, and accurate, statement I've heard on the topic. If the media operated with that kind diligence, caution, and honesty, we wouldn't be having an early stage civil war right now.

I live in Waukesha, less than a mile from the location. I walk that root countless times, and drove through the same streets about 10-15 minutes before-drive it almost everyday. I remember being at a stop sign, and smiling at all the kids and their parents gathering. I’ll never forget when my mom burst into my room, and said “someone drove a van into the Christmas parade”. I could not comprehend what she saying, and when it hit me, my mind jumped back to all those little kids. I’m so glad no kids were seriously hurt, but he decided to run over the Dancing Grannies? He left the vehicle in a random driveway, and the houses ring doorbell captured it all on video, but instead of giving the footage to police, they SOLD it to media companies. That fills me with so much rage; this ‘person’ should be charged with something like withholding evidence, or interfering with an investigation. In my, very angry opinion, you could argue accessory after the fact. So many things could have prevented this, and none of it was done. And the fact that there is no ‘why’ except he wanted to kill people, is just inhuman. The city can still barely believe this happened.

Haven’t watched the video yet, but I do plan to. But something that’s bothering me coming into this issue- Rittenhouse had a self defense claim and killed three white guys, all of whom came at him. The media labeled him “murderer” and “active shooter” “ terrorist” and let’s not forget “white supremacist.” But this guy just ran over innocent elderly and children. And had Facebook statuses about killing white people. What does the media call him? “Suspect” “man” “driver” and I saw one headline that claimed an suv ran into a Christmas parade , as if the SUV did the killing all on its own. The double standard and hypocrisy in the media is disgusting. The media is the reason people are polarized and the reason politics are so divisive. The hypocrisy and agenda pushing needs to stop.

This man if you look retrospectively was escalating . It was only a matter of time before he did a crime big enough to warrant such attention . Law enforcement / the legal system took their eye off the ball by not realising that this man needed bigger thrill from his crimes and no amount of immediate intervention could have prevented this escalation except for incarceration . Too many career criminals are let off time and time again . And it sends a really unsafe message to keep doing crime as the consequences are not a sufficient deterrent . Then it gets too late , victims suffer horribly , everyone washes their hands of their culpability, criminals are labelled monsters that ‘ came out of nowhere ‘ when the escalation becomes noticeable . There was. Plenty of warning if only someone had taken the time to really see what was happening here xxx

Thank you for the comment suggesting more effective communication between mental health professionals and the courts. I would like to know how the court ordered- counseling in Brook's case was monitored and what treatment recommendations were made? It would seem to me that Brooks was certainly given a diagnosis that probably required medication. Who was responsible for case management ? He was sure to have had a probation or parole officer. This smacks of multi -system failure .

Dr. Grande, you've got to do a follow-up to this Darrell Brooks video in light of his recent courtroom antics. Brooks is exhibiting numerous behaviors that are consistent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and his courtroom conduct has been outrageous.

What a monster! The justice system in the US seems to be like in a Third World country. This evil criminal was free while people with minor non-violent offences get draconian sentences. Clown World is pure evil and creates extreme suffering. R.I.P. the innocent victims 🙏

Who is getting draconian sentences? We need longer jail terms. As Dr Grande said, habitual violent criminals should be permanently jailed unless they fully rehabilitate. Which is unlikely. Three strikes.

The priority of law enforcement should be to keep us safe from violent criminals. This guy had a very violent record. Why on earth is someone like him let out so readily when non-violent criminals (like drug users, protesters) are held on higher bond? We REALLY need to rethink & reform our justice system

I would like to see this one compared to James Fields in Charlottesville because that case has already been ruled on and it's more similar. Fields killed only one person with his car (she actually died of a heart attack) while trying to flee from antifa. First degree murder, 4 life sentences and one hate crime charge for every person he hit with his car, because of his political ideologies. Since Darrel also had racial political ideologies, specifically expressed hatred and wanting violence towards the group of people he mowed down, hate crime seems clear. let's see hate crime charges stack. I'll be absolutely shocked if they do, but if we still have justice in this country, they will

Dr. Grande, thank you for covering this event. I grew up in Wisconsin and moved out of state less than a year ago. I saw so much polarization and hostility emerge there. I've felt safer being away. As for critical thinking, we are lacking. Often, it seems to mean reciting the right opinion with the right emotion, which is scary to realize. Doing so only serves to make us compliant, and uninformed compliance opens us up to serious harm, which is bad. I know that should be obvious, but it bears saying as long as analyses like yours are a rarity instead of the norm. Again, thank you.

No doubt if it was a white man who had done the same exact thing in a black suburb with social media promoting racist views this would have been considered a domestic terrorism case. The silence the mainstream media has shown regarding this is unreal. All loss of the life is horribile and I hope to see the day when unity not division is promoted in this country.
