Just yesterday, a friend of mine NAILED a description of Wawa as being the only place in Pennsylvania where another customer will hold the door open for you before trying to run you over in the parking lot. All Wawas have these double doors that encourage "door etiquette" from customers, especially when you see someone holding a bunch of coffees, etc. But the traffic flow around the gas pumps and parking spaces is a bit crazy.

Wawa showed up in Florida and quickly took over. They get so much of my money. A lot of people think of them as a gas station, but in reality they are a sandwich shop and convience store that happens to sell gas. I'm probably at a Wawa 3 or 4 times a week.

When I first read about Wawa expanding beyond the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area and into Florida and Virginia, with the former the obvious is right there: retirees and "snowbirds", plus the first stores opened in the Orlando and Tampa-St. Pete's area, the latter being where the Philadelphia Phillies hold Spring Training at their complex in Clearwater. As for Virginia, the first stores opened in the Norfolk-VA Beach-Hampton Roads area, but this time not because of retirees and "snowbirds", but due to the presence of the Norfolk Naval Base in Norfolk and NAS Oceana in VA Beach. Likewise, Wawa's westward expansion in the Midwest is due in part to Sheetz being out in that area, along with Turkey Hill Minut Markets (which originated in Lancaster County, PA) being out there as well (and that occuring due to, until 2019, being owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger Company).

So true. But with how crazy gas prices are, I’ve stopped going to Wawa for gas if there’s a Sam’s Club down the road or I’m desperate. But that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped going to Wawa. They’re my preferred convenience store for food items… not true for coffee, though. Sadly, Tigermart and/or Royal Farms have won that because of their machines. But back to the food… anyone else know why their pasta bowls went away? The Spaghetti n meatballs (thank god they still have that individual component at least) were pretty good, but they weren’t “good,” if you know what I mean. And no, I don’t mean the Mac n Cheese you can find in the cold foods display. I mean something you could get from the Hoagie makers.

As a Philadelphian I am legally required to stan for Wawa. I don't really drink coffee but my family swears by it, and their ice cream is definitely good. My parents grew up down the street from that first store (which only just closed in 2016!) People can obviously go a little overboard about it, it is absolutely a very good convenience store, but it is still a convenience store. The hoagie comparisons should be to Subway (to which they are far and away superior), rather than a local deli/hoagie shop. Unfortunately the hoagies have taken a dive throughout their expansion. They used to slice the meat and cheese fresh for the sandwich and use Amoroso rolls (a famous Philadelphia bakery which goes a long way to establishing Philly's sandwich cred). As they expanded they've switched to presliced meat and baking their own bread which is just not on the same level as Amoroso's. It's still miles better than Subway, to be clear, just not as good as it used to be.

I've lived in PA for about a decade and my wife is a native. One thing I'd add as a big draw is health. Wawa has a much healthier menu than many other convenience stores. For instance, its in-state convenience store rival is Sheetz which just sells tons of fried junk food. I genuinely don't think a Wawa even has a fryer in the kitchen. You can get fresh hoagies, soup, quesadillas, fruit, etc. So it might be a gas station but it's healthier than most fast food! (Also can't believe you didn't mention the soft pretzels!! They're super popular).

Two things that I think is also important is the fact that they are open 24 hours and the nostalgia factor. In a lot of small east coast towns like the one I grew up in it’s the only place you can get quick food after like 10pm and you build strong associations with the local store. you and your friends go there as a teenager for late night food and it become a meet up spot. Then you get older it becomes the go-to spot when you leave the bar. I grew up in Maryland and now live in the southwest, anytime I have to go back east i make it a point to stop at wawa cause it feels and tastes like those long nights i spent with my friends working on cars till the sun came up when we were young. I think everyone who grew up with one in their town has some great memories that included a late night wawa run

The 1,000th store has actually been opened, in (or very close to) Audubon, New Jersey. The front has a permanent "1,000th store" sign just underneath the Wawa sign. I was in the area for the weekend and saw the sign, just after my initial watch of this video. Wawa coffee got me through my undergrad degree, and now my nephew works at one, I definitely support Wawa's planned expansion.

Going to Coast Guard basic training in south Jersey over Christmas, all recruits got a small collection of "gifts" like coast guard beer coozies and what not, but we also got a free coffee coupon at Wawa. During basic training any small token of appreciation means a lot and getting stationed there later in my career I got to be a regular customer of Wawa and each location truly does feel like a "home town" store. I felt genuine appreciation for the local towns and areas each individual location serves. Great Video!

One of the most unfortunate stories of Wawa was the time they almost got sued by a homeless man. For those of you who don't know, Wawa has baked goods that have to be thrown out at the end of the night. Well, the Wawa I worked for began giving out this perfectly fine food to local homeless people. One guy claimed he got sick and said it was from that food, which is complete crap. The case never made it anywhere, but that was the end of feeding the homeless. Greed cost a lost of hungry people access to food that otherwise goes in the dumpster. As a happy ending, when I was still working there we used to put the 'good food' in seperate new trash bags and let a 'rumor' go out into the homeless community. Not sure if they kept up that tradition as it's been decades since I left.

I am from New Jersey and now live in south Florida, I think a lot of people down here don’t make the same association of Wawa as an “upscale” convenience store like they do up north. There was a big battle here in Florida that Wawa actually lost because they wanted to open across from a middle school, and parents protested. I think in PA/NJ, parents would probably be much more willing… they could drop off their kids and grab breakfast.

PA native here-for those unfamiliar with Wawa, think of it like Target vs Walmart/Kmart. It's generally nicer and cleaner, new ones have gas pumps, the hoagies aren't as good as they used to be but still pretty good since you can customize the sandwich + they're made pretty quickly, they're constantly adding stuff to the menu (paninis, hot dogs, pizza, etc) It's just overall a pretty good experience especially since during peak hours Wawa can be extremely busy, but you usually don't have to wait too long.

I'm so happy to see you cover our beloved Wawa. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, 7Eleven was big in SE PA and once in a while I would see a small Wawa but never visited. Eventually Wawas became more common and 7Elevens became scarce. This was a good thing for us because Wawa had a deli making fresh made to order sandwiches compared to prepackaged stuff and much less variety from the other. They constantly expand their menu and there seems to always be something for everyone. Even though there are now Wawas EVERYWHERE, they can be quite crowded during peak hours, but the service is generally fast and friendly. I would rate their management and quality control as very good.

I live in State College Pa and there's an intersection outside of town that has a Sheetz on one corner, a Rutters on another, and they are planning on building a Wawa on a third. For my money, the food at Sheetz has a very slight edge, but Wawa's coffee is orders of magnitude better. Wawa gets a bonus because it takes me back to my vacations in South Jersey.

They just built one by me near central florida. Customizable hoagies, also soups, donuts, different coffees, nice tables outside with umbrellas to sit at. Definitely my favorite "gas station/conveinience store". Also, being able to walk in at 3am and leave 5 minutes later with a customized italian hoagie was unforgettable. And the hoagie didn't seem stale at all, I was really impressed.

One store design feature to mention is their parking lots. They have a ton of drive up spots in front and on the side. You fill up the tank and can drive straight into a spot. Compare that to most 7-11's or other gas station convenience stores that maybe have 5-10 spots in front

@@jonplaud in my area people are using the local wawa as a truck stop despite it being a small store with no gas station in the middle of the woods. It's a cut through area between two major highways and they'll all deviate down this 40mph road for 20 miles because it's a truck stop to them. They can't fit their big rigs and trailer hitches in the parking spots so they'll just park along the curbs and on the roads shoulder area. It's a real hazard especially since the regular car traffic is always nuts. I refuse to go there because every time I drive by it looks like a zoo. And because it's a fast in and out thing people's personalities get really stern. They charge in there like it's their own personal fridge and you're in their way. Bad things happen when you get a lot of people in a small place.

As someone who grew up in the Philly area, I would add "Integration with the local region" as a key reason Wawa has been successful. Philadelphians are a proud group of people who know non-Philadelphians don't like them and we don't give a darn what they think. And we love our local institutions (example: cheesesteaks.) Wawa has that same sentiment--it sounds like just another convenience store to outsiders, but Wawa takes incredible pride in what they do and Philadelphians have responded to that.

It is just very clean, very spacious, very friendly, very easy to use - for example, a decent variety of sandwiches and other foods you can order via computer panel, and then pick up. They are very clever in having a reasonable (but not enormous) series of things you can order. I cannot imagine any other convenience store where I would be comfortable regularly ordering a sandwich or soup! But it is truly just that much better - it's quite decent.

Avid Wawa customer here in Richmond, VA. I had no idea that it wasn't a Gas Station first and convivence store second. As someone who is very picky about where I get my gas from, I will normally go out of my way to go to Wawa almost exclusively. I never knew about their origins so this was really informative to me. They just sort of came out of nowhere and took the area by storm. Most people I know love Wawa. I don't really do coffee or any of their other products but I do love their hot food offerings. It's a great place to get food from with quality around fast food level (or actually slightly higher). I would say Wawa is a very trusted name, so if you get one in your area, definitely go there. They also have little perks like free air pumps, ATMs with no surcharges, and other similar things that make you head there for a number of reasons. As a convivence store it's heads and tails above 7-11

Wawa is incredible. I grew up in Bucks Country - about an hour north of Philly - and I make a concerted effort to go to Wawa every time I am back in town. All of the key things were mentioned in this video but I also want to emphasize the convenience factor coupled with a high-quality product. The big big thing that everyone loves about Wawa is the hoagies. In the summer they will run Hoagiefest where you can get a sub at a solid discount. It's the go-to food item when you want a quick meal but don't want to go to a McDonald's or something similar. Plus everything else you'd want with your Hoagie is right there. I'm surprised Subway locations even still exist in the Philly area because there is just no need to ever go there. Would love to see Wawa expand to Chicago one day!

Here in Southern Jersey Wawa is everywhere and people LOVE THEM. My town has one, and the next town over has 3 Wawas... that is right 3. 1 for each part of town, and they all do very well from what I hear. What really sets Wawa a part is that their food is great (they make better subs/hoagies than some of the dedicated sub chains in the area) and made to order unlike places like 7/11, they also don't have the bad reputation that a lot of chains like 7/11 have in terms of customer service or poor maintenance. Overall I have to say Wawa is as good as it gets for a convience store/gas station/ food on the go place.

One big thing about why I and I think many others like about Wawa is their consistency. The point of chain convenience stores and fast food restaurants is that you know what you're getting quality wise, but a lot of times those places are more inconsistent than any other restaurant you could go to. I cannot think of a time that I have had something from Wawa and felt it was below their standard of food. I feel like I could go to Wawa anytime and trust that it will meet a certain quality that I expect which is very valuable.

@@slgordon3You’re lucky you haven’t experienced their downfall. They claim they didn’t change the bread, but the hoagie rolls are just not the same as the used to be at all. They also started putting rewards that you can scan on their rewards app, but for some reason they didn’t make them one time use codes that expired when used so people would screenshot them and continue to use them. They definitely lost a lot of money off of that and that may be why quality has declined. Now you can only scan rewards codes at a manned checkout and they check to make sure you’re actually on the app. They also haven’t been checking your ticket number for your order when you pick it up at the counter since covid so if you aren’t in store waiting when your food is ready you’ve got a 50/50 chance of it being stolen especially if you’re in a superwawa. That probably lost them a lot of money too because they will remake your order if you tell them you didn’t pick up the food.

One thing worth noting was that in the past Wawa had fresh cut-in-store deli meat and cheese for their hoagies, unfortunately it's prepackaged meat and cheese now. Also I think they're maybe overdiversifying their menu away from regional culture food but hey if it makes them money good for them. The best thing about wawa is their iced tea, by the way. I always have at least one half-gallon bottle of it to drink. They were a favorite stop for a quick lunch at a good price, and the service was always amazing!

Grew up in NJ and loved Wawa for most of my life. Around 2018ish, it started going down in quality for me but it's still someplace I would rather eat at than most fast food/convenience stores. I recently moved to TX and have been completely spoiled by Bucees. I don't think I'll ever look at Wawa the same way again.

As someone who benefitted from the Wawa expansion to Florida, I love them. It blows my mind that some of them are open 24 hours around here. There are definitely certain Wawas that we avoid, and there's usually a bunch of weirdos hanging around, but it's way less sketchy than 7-11 or Circle K

I completely agree as another Florida Wawa costumer. When I walk in a 7-Eleven bathroom I'm greeted with boring white walls, a dirty floor, a toilet that seen better days, and a sink with so much grime and hard water that the water is sprayed out in a little jet making it very difficult to wash your hands. All I'm thinking of is how many people have taken drugs in this bathroom? 🤢

As someone that lives in the Philadelphia area, Wawa has sacrificed the “traditional quality” of hand sliced lunchmeat and “made-to-order” food in order for quickness and ability to grow nationwide. Coming along with the rapid expansion comes with big price hikes. I understand Wawa gets all this praise but places like Royal Farms and Sheetz don’t ditch quality because their expansion. Having grown up in the Greater Philadelphia area, I kind of take Wawa for granted having been around it all my life. I work in NYC now, so I definitely miss not having it as a breakfast or lunch option as well as the surcharge free ATMs. I did find it pretty amazing that there are Wawa's down in Orlando now. It was nice to get a tasty meatball sandwich and a bottle of Wawa iced tea after a long day at Disney World. Having moved to Central NJ but still in the reach of Wawa I have the option of Quick Chek convenience stores (more of a Northern NJ based chain.) They're close to being the quality of Wawa but not quite. Maryland Based Royal Farms has made its way into NJ and PA too to try to creep into Wawa's territory. They're good (especially the fried chicken), but still not Wawa!

Experienced Sheetz a lot on trips but never Wawa until a trip to VA, after which it was Sheetz who? I really cannot wait to see Wawa move into Atlanta. QT and RaceTrac have both sat on their backsides for years and done nothing to improve their stores, especially the "made to order" food. Wawa is going to show them how it should be done and I really hope clean house in the process. Meanwhile, Sheetz is in North Carolina and looking south. Not as good as Wawa but what the heck. Even Wegmans has been quietly looking at Atlanta options for years. It is only a matter of time before one of these chains makes a move. Wawa is already opening in South Georgia soon. They are not playing games. Cannot wait.

Growing up I never heard the turn "sub" in relation to a long sandwich except in reference to the brand Subway. Outside of that chain, it was always "hoagie" Wawa's usage of the term was them integrating with their region and taking pride in US, rather than them creating the term and pushing it on us. I think that is a great example of why Southeastern Pennsylvanians are so fiercely loyal to Wawa. On a side note, my wife is a bit younger than me and originally from NJ and "sub vs hoagie" is one of our most frequent arguments, lol. Even so, she gives in and says "hoagie" in reference to Wawa only.

Wawa actually charges less for gasoline compared to local gas stations. Even if it means taking a loss, just visiting a wawa for gas encourages people to head inside and buy a snack or pick up lunch because that's where they make their money. Their food is actually very fresh and there's always something new to try. I can honestly say that after a decade of buying hoagies and their specialty drinks that I have never had a bad experience food or otherwise from wawa.
