It was just a joke but it struck a real chord that hit on Brady's experiences with the black community and his insecurities. Comedy is funny but it hurts when the shoe fits. But Brady used it to propel himself. And it's fine for him not to like the joke. Comedy is everyone's perogative.

It's one of those things that's funny because its true, but I think Brady probably took it out of context. I didn't see it as Mooney attacking his blackness. G Airy:. The joke is funny if you really don't know who Bryant Gumbel is. Gumbel got his whitewashed image because of the way he talked and being the first black person to host the Today Show which was the number one rated morning show for years. Bryant Gumbel was a very proud black man but you rarely heard that side of him because he did host this show. You finally heard it when Gumbel interviewed MLK Jr.'s cohort the Rev. Ralph David Abernathy about his book The Walls Came Tumbling Down. it was about his and Kings involvement in the Civil Rights movement. Abernathy told some things about MLK's marital infidelities. Gumbel did not like that Abernathy was telling these things. You could tell that Gumbel was outraged with Abernathy for telling that. A lot of people assumed that Gumbel was whitewashed but he was far from it. At the time of this Gumbel/Brady joke Mooney knew that he was playing on Gumbel's perceived image but not the true Gumbel. That's why I personally did not find it funny. Also at the time we knew nothing about Wayne Brady other than his being the only black on shows with white people.

I think Mooney didn’t think too deep about it but prolly Brady has some personal experience that explains why he feels the way he does.

The fact you feel he needed that sketch to be relevant is exactly why he doesn’t think the joke is funny. You can say the black audience wasn’t aware of him, but you can’t say it made him relevant or any more black.

I believed the stars aligned for Brady to "crossover" and I say it with no disrespect. His style of comedy does appeal more to the other people(white) and truly a bit more of the higher intelligence but for those who didn't take him in was given a different insight to his comedic capabilities and allowed the other black audiences that knew little to nothing about his comedy to embrace him and also connect cuz u saw how he pioneered in this area where acceptance is hard with white culture. Dave did a great justice and Wayne Brady also allowed those who forgotten that he is still black regardless of how u view his comedy. Much respect

"higher intelligence," and who would that be? Sounds offensive; false stereotypical rhetoric. Wow....

Some brother get the chance to make some money, and some get a chance to make a lot of money, Brady makes a lot of money, so its clear he ain't no regular dude. Mooney blew what ever chances he had. He shouldn;t have hated On brady or Gumbal for making mad money on the white side, as that is where the big money is. what that ssaying? You have to be in it to win it.

@@chrismachabee3128 Trust and believe Paul was not hatin' on Gumbel nor Brady; HE'S A COMEDIAN! I knew Paul, he was the coolest dude ever. Paul was a "watcher," a thinker. He made fun of everything and everyone. We can't take some things so seriously. I liked the way Paul evolved into using his comic genius in discussing racism and uncovering injustice in this world. He made a choice to express his truth and he enjoyed his success. He profited a lot behind the scenes as a writer. Paul had no issue with these guys. It's called comedy.

@@trishgordon4269 Trish my dearest Trish, you are right, no argument. See, but here is the thing, in addition to trying to be funny, you just might say something that is not funny and offend someone to the point that they are upset. Now, what this whole is about is Mooney cracking on Brady and Gumball, that's OK, but wait, somebody got they feelings hurt. Now the fact I was in the audience listening to the joke at the time it was made, makes me familiar intimately with the issue. So, now I learn, after having never given the joke a second thought that someone was harmed and it was Wayne Brady. Now I like Wayne Braady, and I admire him for what he has made of his life. due to that, he brings it up, its here on the Net, and now guess what? I get to take sides!! So, as you see I took Wayne Brady side against the joke, not necessarily Paul Moony, because truth be told in all the years I known Mooney if he ever made me chuckle that would be something. Mooney a good man, but for me he never been that guy, like Hart or Chappelle, just make you crack up with funny stuff they be saying. I think Mooney made his bones writing for Richard Pryor, don't hold me to that, But he is also a writer and has written some funny stuff and may actually have written for Chapple. So, dearest Trish, that's my story, I understand Mooney and he cool, I'm just going with the flow here you understand. We just be rappin' is all, we cool? Hope so. You are having a good day, OK? C ya'.

The joke and the sketch made him relevant again and the fact of the matter is that to this day talking about the whole thing is a great way to set up this type of content that allows him promoting whatever he got going on.

It just kind of let us know Wayne Brady personally didn’t think he was black enough either. He’s reaction proved it!
