I own that first live steam engine that Wayne built and talked about. Still running it in 2023! And, I agree with everything he said about building and enjoying live steam locomotives. All of us who knew, learned from and loved Joe Mastrorocco miss him dearly!

Great story. Really excellent tribute to the hobby and the importance of mentoring. Glad Wayne bought American Model Engineering and kept that going. Have bought some parts from Wayne and been very pleased. Much appreciated!

Its been a pleasure to chat with wayne the last 2 years at mill creek. Its been even more of a pleasure to get to operate one of his fine machines. The H10 my buddy owns is a well cared for and very well made locomotive. Its been easy to work on and an absolute dream to operate!

I have a question do I have to be a mechanical engineer to build one of these?
@mylesspear

It would certainly help, but not really. All you really need is a good mechanical mindset and your pretty much set. If you don’t? That’s fine, too! Just find someone willing to teach you the ropes of this hobby. :)

Thanks. I can do trig and welding I also have blue prints. I just need to learn machining maybe. Hopefully all that will help

@@kaipu3197 honestly as long as you're methodical, you should be good. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but also make sure you sometimes have thick skin as some folks unfortunately don't like to share their knowledge.... thankfully those folks are getting harder to find. Good luck!

What I usually recommend if you have the opportunity to go to a community college that has multiple classes in machine shop, welding, and maybe even learning how to draw then, CAD, then that would make a great background for someone looking forward to start building one of these projects for themselves. And if you don’t have a mechanical background initially it is something that can be learned with the help of others. The other thing I recommend is get a small stationary steam engine project and start with that, because it does get expensive to make mistakes but at least with the small engines the cost of replacing a piece that may have gotten broken or not machine correctly It’s not too bad.
