@@crushit9576first 10 is typically the prime of a players career, but by any metric Gretzky was better taking into account everything. And this is from someone who thought Lemieux was the 2nd best of all time and accomplished amazing things with all his health problems. I even won hockey pools because I had Lemieux on my team. I could even have a bias towards Lemieux over Orr, who I never got to see play during the prime of his career. Orr’s career was also cut short by injury. He only played 10 years which also is why I like to use the first 10 as a comparison between the 3 best of all time. What he accomplished as a defence-man was incredible. But nobody took the league by storm to the degree Gretzky did from the first year his stepped on the ice. Not only was he competitively miles ahead of the rest of the league, but also the other players on his own team year after year. He made the players he played with better. Messier was very average the first few years until he became a star after getting motivation from Gretzky’s example. He even recounts a time he went over to Gretzky’s house and saw Gretzky’s point total goals for every game on their schedule for the week ahead. He knew he had to elevate his own goals seeing that example from the best ever. And guess what, even Lemieux admits playing with Gretzky during their first Canada cup was an inspiration for him seeing how incredibly motivated Gretzky was game in and game out every day. Lemieux was great before but took his game to another level after playing with Gretzky. He was often accused of being a floater before but very rarely after. Gretzky was self motivated from day one entering the league. He was competing against his own goals trying to exceed them time and time again. If Lemieux had the same motivation from day one, and yes, didn’t have all his health problems, I could see a serious case where he would have surpassed Gretzky. The same could also be said of Orr’s career cut short by injury. Btw, people often discount the impact injuries had on Gretzky as well. After the Suter hit in the Canada cup he was never the same super human player again. He never had fewer than 130 points in a season before that hit and only hit 130 points once after that hit. He was never a minus player before that hit, including the first couple of years on a bad Oilers team, but was only a plus twice after that hit. If it wasn’t for that injury his points totals would have been well into the 3000’s and his goal scoring record would have ballooned even out of Ovie’s reach. Unfortunately injuries happen and you have to evaluate what you’re left with. We can play woulda coulda shoulda all day long but nobody did it better than Gretzky ever.

@@NS-ie2ld So you are saying that after 99 was injured he didn't do as well afterward... But when 66 had most of his career with back pains you should say the same. And the cancer part also. Oilers had such a great team that even when 99 left they still won the cup.66 payed 50% of capacity most of his career. When all things put together,, 66 is/was the best of all times. I could also say that if you put a healthy 66 today in the NHL and a healthy 99. 66 would win. As he was big , fast and skilled. That's why to me 66 is the best of ALL times. But hey that is my point of view. I get you. You are in the majority of the people here. But also the majority of people will say that Ovy will be the best goal scorer ever if he beats 99 in scoring. But that will also be false. Lemieux was drafted in 1984, so he played most of his career until the trap came into the game. Lemieux had 199 points in 1988-89 so he was playing in the heyday of 1980’s NHL scoring. As for injuries to Lemieux and what if, that’s what makes Gretzky’s records even more remarkable because of his durability. He led the league in assists at age 37 so he was still great when he was playing for the Rangers in the late 90’s. Gretzky changed his game from a goal scorer to a play maker. In saying all that, I feel fortunate to have watched Gretzky and Lemieux’s full career as it would be like growing up watching Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell.

There are 2 factors that makes Wayne Gretzky stand out from the other legends and it has to do with Gretzky size, and his genius vision on the ice to dodge injury for most of his career. This was a gift most other greats did not have like Bobby Orr, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemiuex, etc with their careers cut short, but Gretzky under normal circumstances should have been tossed around like a tennis ball in the rink, but his visual instinct kept him from major injuries. This in itself sets him apart and most other greats just did not have that prowess. #2, I never thought it was fair to compare players that play an entire 80 games or close to 80 games and players that only play half or more than half a season. Most players including Gretzky slow down and get fatigued usually in the last half of the season and their PPG reduces a bit. i never thought it was fair to compare players that play only 2/3 a season like Lemieux and then get injured their body was not in full fatigue factor like Gretzky was and had Gretzky played the exact same amount of games as Lemieux during a season his PPG total would be significantly higher. The fatigue factor makes a huge difference on points total and Lemieux took advantage of that.

Mario at his best was possibly the only one able to elevate himself into the Gretzky-esque level of greatness. No one else even had a serious crack at 200 pts a season or 200 pts over significant length of a season. I don’t know if an healthier and better surrounded Mario would have been to reach 200 pts over multiple seasons, it’s really a what-if question. I doubt he would have beaten Wayne’s points records though. It would have required either insane seasons in the dead puck era of the late 90’s and early 2000’s or superb longevity. It more realistic to see him get well past 2000 pts, bellow Gretzky but nearly unreachable to the “mortal” players. He would have had a decent shot at the goal record though.

Gretzky is not only the greatest ever in any Western team sport, he is the most genuinely humble athlete of any athlete in Western team sport. Mario may have broken some of his records, but certainly not all of them. His skill set is continually and massively underrated by people who were too young to see him play and who have only seen the youtube videos of his career highlights. He was one of the greatest puck handlers ever, and no one had the kind of agility, balance and all-around mobility he had on skates. No one moved like him. He had the ability to go through the whole team on whim (and he did on occassion), but he recognized that he'd have a lot longer and healthier career by making the puck do the work and choosing his moments to mesmerize with his skills. The reason he was able to put up 200 points in a season was because he was able to play 35+ minutes every night, and he was able to do that for 80 games for 10+ years because of how smart & efficiently he played. The Orrs and Lemieuxs and Bures were absolutely brilliantly skilled players, but their careers were greatly affected by injury. When you have the puck, you are the target, and when you have a tendency to hold the puck, you're going to take a lot of shit. Gretzky had the puck all the time, but he moved it quickly.

So Ovechkin has a variety of shots and can hit the net which makes him the best goalscorer, Mario is the best natural player with talent, and Wayne had a third eye on the back of his head and the gift of foresight which made him the greatest playmaker in the history of the game.

Wayne slurs his speech which is concerning.

Is it me or Wayne does not look so good? He mumbles a lot and looks much older than 62 :(

Best ppg season is Gretzky 2.77 ppg. Second best 2.69 also Wayne. Mario was a PP merchant needing the powerplay for nearly 50 percent of his points in 4 of his 6 best seasons and was a career 40% pp dependence. Not a chance he beat Wayne’s totals. Wayne’s just being humble per usual. Numbers don’t lie. Mario never put up 2.77 ppg in a season Mario never scored at 1.18 goals per game in a season.

Mario was better than Wayne, not even close. Just ask Paul Coffey or Bobby Orr or Scotty Bowman or Scott Pronger or Wayne Gretzky himself… Only homers would disagree

All respect to Mario but he would never break Gretzkys record and no he wouldn't have even if he was healthy. Thats just a fact. As great as he was and he was.

Should have asked Wayne about Dale Hawerchuk’s uncalled penalty, which is the only reason Mario was free to take a pass.

I always considered Wayne the greatest in NHL's history because of everything he accomplished but I always thought Mario was just as good. He just didn't have the luxury of a healthy career...
