Wayne Gretzky Was A Blue?! - Right Player, Wrong Team

In late February 1996, Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the St. Louis Blues. Though he intended to spend the final years of his career with his new franchise, The Great One would leave the team behind after just 31 games on the roster.
Here's why Gretzky's brief trip to Missouri made him the right player on the wrong team!

I was at the game where Gretzky got his first home goal as a Blue. But that was quickly forgotten as it was the same game as the infamous Tony Twist/Kelly Chase fight (Twist was living in Chase's apartment as he'd just been traded to Hartford with Shanahan in the Pronger deal, to which Chase famously told Twist "the rent just went up"). It's nice to say I got to see Gretzky play, but it's way cooler to be able to say I was there for that fight.

Daniel Alfredsson plays almost 20 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, and then comes contract talks in the summer of 2013. Ottawa offers him a small one year contract worth around $1 million. Detroit then offers Alfredsson a one year contract worth $4.5 million, and then this was the darkest days in Ottawa Senators history. Daniel Alfredsson was initially supposed to wear #11 with the Detroit, but Daniel Cleary, who also wore that number backed out of an offer from the Philadelphia Flyers, in which Cleary returned to Detroit. Daniel Alfredsson almost had to wear number #24, but since Daniel Cleary had a lot of respect towards Daniel Alfredsson, he gave up his number and wore #71. Ironically, Daniel Alfredsson Red Wings jerseys with #11 were almost made shortly after he signed with Detroit.

Wayne Gretsky left and eventually Brett Hull because they had a monster as coach named Mike Keenan. Mike Keenan did have a point such as thinking the Bues were too soft especially with grinders being wanted to dig pucks out of the corners. He also wanted a more physical team. Keenan's personality however was so bad Gretsky could'n't stand it. The Blues missed out on years with Hull and Gretsky.

Jagr on the Caps. I was honestly thinking of suggesting the Jagr trade for Buyer's Remorse, but considering that the short term issues (the Pens getting a batch of dead-end prospects, the Caps getting half the expected production and all of the cancerous drama that characterized Jagr's later years in Pittsburgh) are canceled out by the long-term effects (both teams being put in position to win draft lotteries as prospects like Ovi and Sid reached draft age), I didn't know if it would work for that series. But Caps Jagr seems tailor-made for this, seeing as he was envisioned as "the missing piece" on a team that had a lot of pieces from a relatively recent Finals appearance, only for the team to stall and ultimately undergo a firesale.

@Chiefsfansince-qb1kt
@Chiefsfansince-qb1kt 3 жыл бұрын
Of the 3-players traded to the Kings in this deal, Craig Johnson was the only one who did anything substantial, playing in 10-NHL seasons with several teams. Vopat and Tardif saw limited NHL action but played most of their careers in the minors (AHL, IHL) and in Europe. The #1 pick the Kings received in the 1997 NHL Draft never panned out nor did the 5th round pick from the 1996 Draft the Blues sent the Kings. However, hindsight being what it is, the Kings shed a fair amount of salary with Gretzky's departure, which was pretty much necessary at the time as the authorities were closing in on then Kings owner Bruce McNall for fraud. McNall went to prison not long afterwards, the NHL ran the Kings for a time then found other ownership and eventually the Kings won their 1st Cup in 2012. Meanwhile, the most interesting part of this entire video (to me anyway) is the fact that Blues management sided with Mike Keenan instead of Gretzky in the battle of..."either he goes or I go." Had the Blues known that they were going to part with Mike Keenan halfway through the next season anyway and stuck with Gretzky, the Blues may well have won a Stanley Cup in the late 1990's under the guidance of future hall of fame Head Coach Joel Quenneville. What could have been...

The Kings actually started 95-96 off strong. They were 10-5-5 after 20 games. But Rob Blake got hurt (again) leaving Marty McSorley as the #1 defenseman and shots against skyrocketed. Goalie Byron Dafoe played very well early then started to play like the backup he was. Plus the Kings had no depth at center behind Gretzky. Their second line often had guys like Dmitri Khristich and Eric Lacroix. Younger players like Vitaliy Yachmenev (a rookie) and Yannic Perrault got off to great starts and faded. After that start they were 8-26-5 until the trade and were not well enough off financially to trade for help. After 20 games the talk was an extension for 99 but after another 20-30 games he was ready to go. Gretzky had over 100 points on the season even with that poor team (he still had Kurri and Robitaille on his line....even though they were aging they could still score). That Kings team just completely disintegrated after 20 games.

Keenan didn’t last much longer in St. Louis getting fired early in the 1996-97 season. As I recall recall Keenan was turfed just a few days prior to Christmas. This prompted a Calgary Sun sports cartoonist named Dave Elston to draw up a classic strip. It depicted the back side of Keenan as he left through a door marked “Exit”. All this while a group of St. Louis players in full uniform were singing “We’ll Have a Blues Christmas Without You!!”. Just one of many stops for “Iron Mike” during his rather illustrious coaching career. This included his final NHL coaching stint here in Calgary who signed him to a three year contract and fired him after two seasons.

It would have been GREAT if The Great One could have played longer for my Blues! They should have fired Keenan! The main reason being, they fired him anyway, early in the next season! My mind boggles at just how things would have gone with Gretzky alongside Hull, MacInnis, Pronger, etc. for another year or two or three, with the great Coach Q. Maybe it wouldn’t have taken until 2019 for the Blues’ first Cup? Maybe?

Didn't they fire him because he started pouting on the bench on national TV during a blowout loss or something?

We got Turgeon the following season and at their respective stages career wise they were pretty much at par players. Blues needed a better goalie. Fuhr wasn't going to get it done. Also even though we gave the Red Wings tough series they were always clearly the better team.

I still have the SCORE Pinnacle card at my disposal(1996)! I wonder how valuable it may have become! Mike Keenan was a jerk with regard to his behaviour towards Wayne Gretzky!

Should've went to Vancouver Bure-Gretzky-Mogilny that would have been scary Also had a way better coach back then and Vancouver had just been to the finals the year before so we still had a younger team still ready to win

I actually think that this is a good idea to do this series It's kind of a shame that Mike Keenan and Wayne Gretzky couldn't see eye to eye on a number of things, or that St. Louis decided to keep Keenan at expense of losing Gretzky, because of the bitterness that Gretzky had for Mike Keenan

Wayne Gretzky only left because of Mike Keenan. He almost re-signed too. It wasn't the wrong time. Keenan should have been fired in order to keep Wayne Gretzky.

Wayne Gretzky on the Blues was the best thing ever. If he wasn't on the Blues, Yzerman couldn't blow past him and score the single greatest Red Wings goal. Wayne Gretzky had it lose it Yzerman picks it up Yzerman moving blue line chance SCORREEESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! STEVE YZEREMAN, DETROIT WINS!!!!" also will you do one on the greatest Arizona Coyote. Pavel Datsyuk yes it's a joke edit for missed word
