I look to see what kind of boat you can buy for under $5,000. Can you buy a usable boat, engine and a trailer for under $5,000 total? If you're boat shopping for new boats under 5k - How much boat can you buy for $5,000 and can you buy a new boat with a new outboard engine and a trailer under that budget? With a budget of $5,000 you might think you could get a decent boat that you could take a friend out for the day - but if you're shopping for a new boat, sadly $5,000 is a pretty tight budget. Cheap boats are hard to find and if you're shopping for a new small boat this video is designed to help you shop for the right boat for you and how you might be able to stretch your budget if you buy some components used.

Alumacraft all welded 1440 join boat - $1799 at Academy Sports, McClain 14'-17' aluminum single axle trailer - $799 at Academy Sports. Tohatsu 9.8 hp short shaft tiller outboard - $2254 via online retailer (Mercury 9.9 for extra $101). = Decent sized boat with adequate speed and power with trailer all new for $4852 or $4953. UPDATE January 2023: You've missed your chance. All prices have now increased to the point that this is no longer possible and it might never happen again.

Killer good series. Not everyone can afford an $80,000 70mph,bass tournament boat. Some of us are just looking to transition from the bank/shore to the water.

You can still get a basic aluminum Jon boat, although they ate getting harder to find, as an example Bass Pro no longer offers the low end aluminum boats. Lowes still shows a 10 ft aluminum Jon boat, they show the L1032 for $1016 or a 12 ft for $1271. Brand new basic boats, not a used boat, it's a starting point.

Its amazing how expensive outboard engines are when compared to other small equipment with engine and transmission, like lawnmowers.. For 2000 bucks you can get a 20 hp riding lawnmower, or an 8hp outboard..... I have torn apart and fixed a couple of outboards. They are not as complicated of a system as a riding mower.

@@andrewbahr1921 I mean think about, it only a few companies made outboards for a long time and I'm sure they agreed to keep each other's profits high. It's difficult to find any industry in the United States that doesn't do similar things. especially nowadays in this immoral age, most large business owners would sell their own mother if it made them profit...

@@CommieCat I definitely think it has more to do with market wide price fixing, which is what I mentioned above. Everyone will obviously charge as much as possible, as you said, there are alot more people buying lawn equipment, and it's not a luxury item.

I bought a brand new 12' aluminum boat at Sears when I was a kid in the late sixties. $139 plus tax for the boat and then bought a used 5hp Mercury for $50. I think even counting for inflation today's boat prices are outrageous.

What I did was looked at ever marine power sport store near me and looked at there boats and most of them had small boats laying around. The nice thing from buying from a dealer is that they inspect your boat. I was lucky and cam across a 3000 dollar boat it is a 12 Foot Northwoods Row Water Tight with a 30 pound thrust minn kota with a 9.9 Mercury Four Stroke 2020 and she goes around 23 miles an hour. Hope this helps some people

In 2008, I bought a 1998 15' aluminum V-Bottom Starcraft with a 25hp Evinrude with a trailer and the bigger tires for 2000.00 bucks. Everything was like new, maybe 20hrs on the whole package. The only time I got lucky with buying something. Great video and thumbs up.

👍🏼 great video! I built a spira stitch and glue rowboat a few years ago and found a little trailer for $150. Since then I've added 2 batteries and a trolling motor, a switch panel to run my anchor light, fish finder, nav lights 12v port a USB slot and a bilge pump. I have pole holders bow and stern, tackle storage, anchor compartment and a crab pot pulley arm. I have no idea how much it's cost all tolled but it's a custom build and suits me perfectly! Her name is Miss Daisy and she can be found in the Puget sound during salmon season :)

thanks for throwing this together. i used to have a jon boat i took all over the Patuxent River. I sold it and got a bigger boat, sold that and got a bigger bigger boat. Now, i have a canoe and kayak and want to get a v-bottom. the lowe seems to be the ticket. sometimes having a trailer can be a deterrent at some of the boat launches in the Calvert County/PG and Charles county areas. easier to put it on the back of a pick-up. appreciate the clip....

I picked up a used 1994, 14’ v-Hull and trailer for $320 in 2000. Ran a 1965 evinrude 9.5 on it that I picked up for $300. Have a hook 7, 30lb trolling motor, stereo, lights, down east rod holders etc etc. it’s been a great little boat! I don’t even have $2500 in it. Yea, I couldn’t go out in the North Atlantic in it, but it does great on all the lakes in Ohio Kentucky and Indiana where I fish. I retired last year and bought myself a new tohatsu 9.8 (2k)and gave the 9.5 to my brother, and it’s still running great.

Also a utitlty trailer is often cheaper then a boat trailer and you just slide it on and off. I do this with my 12 foot jon boat you can buy them new alot cheaper and also use it for other things as well you may need to let it hang off the end or the tung

I bought a bass raider and trailer from academy sporting goods last year for $1200 , I then brought a Suzuki 2.5hp from online outboards for $899. Then a trolling motor 45# minnkota for $159, walmart battery for$110. Garmin 4 fish finder for $140. LESS THAN $5000. And fishes great.

Nice video, as usual!... I recently bought a Starcraft ALASKAN 13 DLX, which comes with a floor (uncommon on a 13-ft Utility/Fishing V-haul boat)... I'm really happy with the boat paired with a Yamaha 9.9HP outboard, and I'm towing it with a CE Smith Multi-Sport Trailer.

I was able to buy a 2021 1448mt Lund Jon boat and a Yamaha 15 hp 4stroke for $5800 without trailer. The motor was a 2015 but it was new never been on a boat so the dealer took roughly $500 off

I'm pleased with the setup I've settled on. I bought a used canoe for $300 dollars. It's a 16 feet Coleman RAM-X Scanoe. Awesome canoe. It's rated to hold up to a 5hp engine, which I bought new. It's a 5hp Mercury Propane motor I paid a total of $1810 delivered to my door. Bought a new Karavan trailer that holds up to a 16' boat for under $1100 (tax included) including a swing away trailer jack. The one problem that I've delt with is that the transom is 18 inches. It's fun being able to canoe down a stream them motor down the river that the stream flows into.

I'll be buying a 1972 StarCraft super sport 16 tommorow and his asking price is 4,500. It has a rebuilt 48 horse motor. (Plus trolling) It has a full windshield, brand new interior and relatively new paint job. It's nothing grand but she looks brand new and will do the job I want perfectly.

Lund 12 foot Jon boat $1591. Harbor freight 13hp $429. Swamp Runner long tail kit $549. $2569. Or the big boy predator 22hp $999, SR heavy kit $749. $3400. That's without trailer. I've seen people modify a Harbor freight trailer for round 500 bucks.

In 2002, I bought a new aluminum 16.5 foot deep vee with a Mercury 50 HP 4-stroke and trailer. It had a foot controlled trolling motor, two deep cycle batteries, front and rear fishing decks, vinyl floors, 3 upholstered seats, live well, right and left side storage compartments, 12 gallon tank, lights, bilge pump, etc for $8200.00. I added a nice bimini top for wifey, and I also bought a $600 galvanized steel carport - installed! - under which to store it. I take very good care of my boat, and it still looks great and serves me well. I hate to think what a comparable 2023 model would cost me today. My best advice is this: If you don't have the garage space for your boat, a cheap carport will pay for itself many times during the life of a well maintained boat. And ALWAYS pop off the fuel line and run a carbureted outboard out of gas every time you take it out of the water, even if you think you will be going boating again in a day or two. You never know what might come up and prevent it for a month or two, and this will clog your jets. I also run nothing but premium, ethanol-free gas, though I know this might not be an option for everyone. Happy boating!

Gas motors: I managed to find a 5HP 4-stroke online for around $325 - past Summer 2021. Definitely not as "reputable" as our favorite well-known brands, but does a fair job and starts well.

It is amazing how much boats cost. My interest is a simple row boat with about 600# capacity but even that is quite a pretty penny. The problem with used is that it is pretty scary for a first time boat owner with the possibility of ending up with a hunk that isn't seaworthy.

i spent 1500 on a 3.3m boat trailer and motor, the motor, an old tohatsu 6hp started to have some issues so spent 2000 on a new suzuki 5hp and it works great. then time comes a then theres the trailer which didnt seam to have the proper rego plates so bought a new bigger one (have an old boat which is 4.3m im doing up) for another 2000, all up itd cost me ab 6500 and thats aud, usd its closer too 4500. so remember that u dont have to start of big or flashy, humble beginnings

I got a sturdy INMAR 12 Ft inflatable with an aluminum floor and a 20 horsepower Mercury , it can legally carry 6 people, very safe, very stable boat . Oh and it goes 19 MPH. IT'S A BLAST !!!

I bought a 91 Alumicraft 16ft. boat and 93 trailer and a 91 Yamaha outboard 30hp for $3000 . The boat and motor still have original paint still in great condition.

I make boats that fit this category. I make them in Australia though so the American Market might have to wait a few years for me to start putting factories over there but feel free to tease yourself with the website for Mountain Boats. Also, a cheap way to get around trailers if you have good proximity to the water is with the use of transom wheels or small dollys built for pushbikes.

haven’t finished watching the video yet, will come back to it. But the vid came up on the “recommendeds” and based on the john boat in the thumbnail photo, it reminded me that I’ve sort of like had this youthful “dream” since at least high school, of getting a longer style aluminum john boat and “tricking it out” hahaha as they used to say, and making it an all-arounder for salt and freshwater fishing and duck hunting. I met at least a couple guys, back then, who had similar type boats, and that is where I got the idea. Someday! someeeeeeday! And well, with inflation compounding through the years, I am afraid my dream john boat all arounder will go way higher than 5k as you pointed out at the beginning.

You might check out the Wavewalk S4 microskiff. Can be outfitted with a 6-9.8 HP 4 stroke outboard and rated to 600lbs in capacity for three people. Empty weight 100lbs. Sells for 2700. If you add a new Tohatsu 9.8 HP for $1856 with fuel tank that brings the total to 4556 before registration and safety equipment. Can be car topped so no need for a trailer.

I know this is an older video and with inflation prices change but you should look into the hoodoo hero 130 with a 6hp outboard. Can be car topped and goes about 17mph with the 6hp. with the outboard it is less then 4k.

A Tahootsu motor is actually a Mercury motor, parts are interchangeable, the same company builds both. The difference is the price, check it out.

Sun Dolphin American 12' at bass pro for $750, Harbor Freight Trailer $500 + $70 for plywood on top, Tohatsu 6hp $1,600ish. Now you have a multi-purpose 10ft utility trailer that can fold up vertically for storage, and a 12ft boat that can hold 532lbs and weighs 110lbs itself for less that $3,000. Now you can add a $120 Minn Kota C2 34lb thrust trolling motor to the trolling motor mount on the front, throw in a 109amp/hr everstart deep cycle for $86 and you still have $1,700 for safety gear, registration, and a pretty awesome fish finder.

I saw a 10 foot marlon boat with 2.5 Yamaha, and trailer Going for $4,399 4hp for $4,799. I believe the dealership is called wicked power sports. They have 14 foot package as well.

I bought a new Inmar inflatable with an aluminum floor and 20 horsepower Mercury for $4000 , this boat is very stable and Seaworthy. It has a 6 person capacity. It's an absolute blast .

One of reasons the aluminum cost is very high. Fu bass pro. Hull $6510 18 or 19 ft boat, just hull without stiffeners. $2200. For stifferners flooring. Then flotation foam, flooring, moter. Wait and let market crash, might be waiting along time.

Interestingly enough I went to a boat dealer today and asked about purchasing a 12 foot boat and trailer combination without the engine. He said due to shortages in the supply chain I would be looking at a good 8 to 9 months, and around $8000. Needless to say I will be buying used…

Suzuki DF6 4 stroke $1430. Porta Bote folding 12' boat $3050. I transported this set up on my towed behind my motorhome. Might be cheaper if you can catch a sale.

I'd like to see some for 10k, 15k, and 20k. I'm just thinking about getting a small fishing boat for a river or lake. I dont need a ton of speed as I have a bad back but I do need something I could get into easily.

Surprised he didn't mention inflatable-boats... top brands like zodiac, saturn, or stryker boats. Zodiac makes military boats FYI. Aluminum floor with more buoyancy can support 25hp+ outboard. You technically don't need a trailer at all. Easy to store. Just a high pressure pump and 20 mins or less to assemble.

What about the sea eagle 16 skiff paired with a brand new Honda 5 hp. Gets speeds up to 12mph and costs under 4 grand! It’s an inflatable, fits in the back of your suv so no trailer required! I fish Long Island sound on a hobie pedal drive kayak. Looking to get this sea Eagle rig this spring to cover more ground. Paid almost 3 grand for my hobie!

I have an 8.5 ft sundolph 2 person pontoon plastic boat I boat off market place on FB for $125. Got a 30lb thrust trolling motor for $120 but Honestly wish I had gotten bigger. Got a 3.5 hp Sican outboard off Amazon gets up to about 6-8 mph. And picked up a trailer for free of marketplace fb, painted it and added 8 foot boards for runners. I'm ok with it but I still desire a bass boat with a bigger motor. Wish I had at least a 20hp.

If you're on a budget is not worth buying a new boat. You can get really nice used boats for cheap. Last year we bought a 1999 Key West 196 Bay Reef with a trailer, which is worth $14,000, for only $6500. The people we bought it from did not use it anymore. They were just wanting to get rid of it. They did not care about making money. Just for reference, it's a 19'6" all fiberglass boat. It has a 1999 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro, with only 90 hours on it since it was last rebuilt 11 years ago, an 898C SI Humminbird fish finder and GPS combo, a Boss MRG350B sound system, and Seadek, which is in immaculate condition for being 10 years old, covering the whole thing. It was kept on a covered boat lift. The only thing it did not have was a trolling motor. We ended up getting a 2012 Minn Kota Power Drive, 2 batteries, and all the hardware to mount it and wire it up for about $400. The only problems it had were that the wires under the center console were a rat's nest and the automatic bilge pump didn't work, which were both easily fixable.

The best way to get a cheap boat is to but a used one, then add some modifications to it. Modding is pretty fun as well.

What you have to do in order to get the best price on the boat you really want is to shop for last years leftover boats and motors. Dealers are usually anxious to clean out their inventory after the new models become available.

That used to be the rule - but in the last few years, there haven't been any leftover boats in many markets. I checked in on a few dealers and they were waiting on inventory that would be months away from arriving.

Boats, just like cars are expensive because people keep paying these high prices. I have been tracking the Tracker 1648 for two years and the price has gone up $1200 in those two years, at least where I live. The cost of aluminum hasn't risen that much in those two years, I know because I buy a lot of aluminum for welding projects. I currently have a boat at the moment so I can wait a little while longer but the cost is ridiculous to say the least. I was at Cabela's the other day and they have a 24 ft pontoon boat at $100K!! Wow!!!

12' Sun Dolphin from Tractor Supply Company is $700. Weighs about 110 lbs and is rated for up to 6hp. 4' x 8' flat bed trailer from Harbor Freight is $500. This has a 1200lb capacity. Place a sheet of plywood down and hang 2' of the boat off the front and 2' off the back; there's room to do it. Add in a gas powered outboard & tank/line or trolling motor & batteries, and you are well under the $5k threshold. Opting for a transom mount trolling motor and a deep cycle battery combo will keep you under $2k total. 👍

Very good presentation. The #1 thing to say is right at the end. There are so many quality used boats and motors that it's easy to either buy an entire package or like you said, put a complete package together. I was dirt lucky. I got an older 16' Starcraft w/an 85 hp motor for $1,100. Right place, right time. I put another $1,100 into refurbishing it but I love it! Good video

Those good cheap flatbottom boats will get ya into those tight shallow spots where others can't get. I just picked up a 16' V AlumiCraft w/ a Tiller 2004 25hp Johnson pull-start for $3k. Like new boat & Trailer! She flies! Just put a whale Tale on her & she'll do over 30mph with 2 people in her. I looked back & it looked like only the prop was in the water when going full speed. I live on a creek, so we do a bunch of limb lining for big catfish & run the bays for Reds & flounders. You can find good cheap boats out there but the best time to buy? In the Winter.. Make sure everything has a clear title & is in the sellers name.. Here in Texas the TP&W will Not Title the boat if there are any issues.

Lol... I actually purchased a Harbor Freight trailer and put it together. It was a bit of a pain to assemble, but works just fine. Great for a small boat. Also, if you want to go cheap on the motor (although I am not a big fan of Coleman Outboards) Amazon sells the 2.6 HP Coleman for $650.

@@24hrMusic I was originally going to get the Coleman for my 12ft jon boat but I ended up just going with a mud skipper mud motor. I was debating on getting the harbor freight trailer because trying to register a homemade trailer in Maryland is a pain it seems.

@@gonzalomanriquezjr864 So... If you get the harbor freight trailer, you need to make sure that you get the paperwork from Harbor Freight. In Maryland, I had to build it and get temp plates and then have it inspected. (Do Not "wait" to assemble and register in Maryland. You must do the Maryland paperwork right away after you purchase to avoid fines). If you want one pre-built and you are near Bethesda, I might sell mine (I no longer use it). Some people skip the Maryland red tape and register in Main through a friend... Not that I am suggesting that.

I think I got lucky I bought a 12 ft welded aluminum boat with a 9.9 Mercury motor and steering column with the trailer.. but keep in mind the trailer and the boat were not registered. I paid $2,800..

Trick to a $ 5000 boat is buy a used boat and trailer and a new 9.9 or smaller outboard ....the motor is more important than a pretty new painted boat
