i like the peeler but i understand the Jimmy Skiff II might be less time and possibly less of a challenge/less experience needed to craft it.

My 25-year-old son and I are approaching completion of our 17-foot northeaster dory kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. It has been a great father-son bonding experience and a fun project! Their kits are well designed and the instruction manual is well done so it has gone pretty smoothly. These kits are an easy way to get your feet wet with building a full-size boat. Fun!

Sailing (or motoring) a boat you built yourself must be one of the most life-affirming things anyone could do. Not just a functioning boat, but a beautiful form, crafted by your own hands, that carries you across water.

So many of us are in the same boat, no pun intended. Middle aged guys that have been playing around with boats for decades that kind of get pulled sideways or sort of fall into a project like this. Right there with you. I’ve built a few stitch and glue boats, spent years sailing and motoring all around the Annapolis area. CLC is awesome. I’m currently working on my own design that is a melding of bought plans and my own modifications. Cutting the panels on a home built cnc. Go for it! You can rent space at clc too I think.

I’ve built two wooden boats (an 11’ sailing dingy by “eye”, and a 16’ rowboat from plans), and like others who have commented, there is something very special about being in a boat you built yourself and know intimately. But I would caution that you spend the time making sure the boat you build has been professionally designed for the purpose and conditions you are going to use it. Personally, I enjoy the building process almost as much as using the boat. It teaches me patience!

it is my dream to build a wooden boat for many reasons, the first one is that you have so much hull profiles you can do, not just deep vee planing hulls that are terribly power consuming . second, the wood is naturally a vibration damping material which makes the boat more comfortable. Finally, it is possible to custon build your own boat that suits your needs. very good video

I like your showing of the boat model...models are forever!! Years ago I started a full plank on frame model of my 10 ton "Tahiti Ketch" to test ballast changes to stop the heavy rolling when on the mooring. I was determined to follow good boat building practices in the model, and carefully notched the stem and stern pieces (the "rabbet") to receive the plank ends. I set the last plank in 1 day before my son was born. The model "rested" in my closet for the next 52 years. Today I brought it out to complete the sanding and varnish of the full wood hull!!

In 1986 two things happen in my life we had a child and I built a boat I bought a 17‘3“ skiff. I had paper plans I made the ribs I bought 6 foot wide, 23 foot sheet of plywood I laid out all the offset measurements Cut it and it actually fit. It turned out to be a beautiful center console with a 30 horse Yamaha on it.

Great vid - this is the first vid I have seen while looking at vids for at least three years on building your own boat that suggests to build a kit first - I have been wanting to build a Tango 13 or 14 - I bought the plans and some 1/16 x 8 x 12Inch Thin Wood Sheet for Craft on Amazon to make my own kit - I used my printer to enlarge the plans to be 1 inch = 1 ft - I also bought the fiberglass resin and cloth to use as fiberglass cloth - I just need to get off this PC and out of this chair long enough to put it together - I cut the parts with a scroll saw, the Exacto knife was hard to work with using tiny saw blades for me - if there is a wooden boat you would like to build it is very easy to make a scaled kit and build it to see what challenges and heartaches will be required to build the real thing -

great segment Wayne. my friend had a 15-20 foot wooden boat with a small diesel with drive shaft that looked a lot like the peeler. it was older 25 years ago. the ride in it was unbelievably smooth. we took it out of Deale and went to the down the bay a town or two. it just took the waves so well. i think you should build one, then you can always put it up for sale.....lol. thanks for sharing.

I like the idea of building one of the CLC boats. I have seriously considered building a solar/electric version of the Southwest dory. Kind of patterned after the classic ELCO electric launches. I would probably just put a ePropulsion 3Kw pod motor on it and steer with a rudder. I have an old 20’ electric pontoon boat with one of their 6kw outboards and I enjoy it. It is the only reason I have not built the Southwest Dory. With a 10Kw 48v batteries it would have about 6 hours of cursing at 6-8mph or so. Add 600 watts of solar and it is more like eight hours of endurance. I think you would like the Peeler better than the Jimmy Skiff II. My way of thinking is that you spend an extra 100 hours and get what you really want vs putting 150 hours into a boat that you might not enjoy as much. (Of course it is your call). Keep in mind that the Peeler will be much faster as it can plane. The Jimmy Skiff cannot and will not go much more than 5 mph. If you do decide to build it, I hope you video the project!!!

8:03 Just a little tip, from something I've learned doing something similar If you start from the wider rounder end, an work towards the less of a bend, it is easier to bend the strap/rail/gunnel, on a 20rowboat we call the Carmero (funny story on how it got its name) we had to redo the rails on it, and I started on the less bend end, and I cracked the 2×4 tryn to get it to take the bend in the wider end of the boat, to learn I should of started from the wider stern instead of the narrow bow😅

That's exactly the mistake I made! Logic makes us want to start with the easy part.

@@WayneTheBoatGuy yess, 😆 But it took me a few mistakes to learn that starting with the hard part and saven the easy fer the end when one is tired is a nice treat. Learned that growing up and staking fire wood 😆, always start from the far side, so that in the end you only gotta pick up and stack instead of toting from the far side the whole time 😆

I've built 2 boats out of plywood. It's been decades ago, and I started with plans I got online. One turned out really nice, and I took it out several times, and then sold it to someone who was going to use it as decor in his new shop. The other one was more rugged looking, and never got to see water. The same guy bought it, and was going to turn it into a desk. I never did visit the shop to see if he actually did the things he said he was going to.

These kit boats seem like they would be less maintenance than traditional wood boats because everything is completely sealed in epoxy and fiberglass rather than just painted or varnished wood.
@AbbyNormalGarage
@AbbyNormalGarage 6 ай бұрын
@@WayneTheBoatGuy that does sound better! Teak in a boat is enough maintenance! I still have my great grandpas wooden boat he built. It needs to be sanded down and totally repainted. Jon boat is so much easier! Built a wooden console for a skiff. Coated it in epoxy did great for years. Eventually the epoxy cracked at the top and water got in. Didn’t take long for it to rot. We rebuilt it out of Aluminum. To me wood and boats is like computer controlled motors in salt water. They are great until they’re not! I think like anything if you store it inside and use it carefully it will be fine. It’s when you don’t have the indoor storage space and things sit outside that would cause problems.

I forgot to add that I like the Peeler a lot - I am in South Florida so the boat needs to be able to go in and out of Haulover inlet - I have owned around 10 boats from 10 ft to 27 ft and only the 17 ft Del Quay was the only one I never buried the bow going thru there. I currently live near Hillsboro Inlet -

I think we've all seen videos of how rough it can get there! I think it has a 20" transom which helps, but being flatter on the bottom, that particular boat might be a handful in the inlet.
