Stephen King’s It is a doorstopper of a novel that is not easy to adapt, but director Andy Muschietti has managed to do it over the course of two movies.
Of course, a lot of things are done differently in the films than in the book, and a few events are left out completely. The book switches from the past to the present constantly, while the films split the timelines, with the first film focusing on the Losers Club as kids, and the second showing their final confrontation with It as adults.
Let’s take a look at the ways in which Stephen King’s It is totally different than the movies.

Sorry - but I would not read anything by Stephen King (or bother to go to see any films of his books) Personally I think him highly overrated and quite frankly suffer from verbal diarrhoea. I have never found any of his books even vaguely scary - and YES I did give him a try waaay back when I read Christine (the car one) and the Tommy Knockers (and I saw that famous film with jack Nicholson - I keep forgetting the name) In my opinion James Herbert (may he rest in peace) was vastly superior horror writer.

The movie also left out all the stuff about Bev's husband, her friend and his abuse. Also, left out the fact that her husband and Bill's wife both travel to Derry and that impacts the ending of the book.

That's what pissed me off the most. Since Tom survived in the miniseries, I was hoping they would have him die in Chapter Two like he did in the book. The reason why they cut his and Audra's importance was because Audra's actress ended up pregnant and couldn't film anymore than the one scene she shot. I don't understand why they couldn't just get another actress. I really wish we saw Tom get eaten by Pennywise like in the book. But for anything creative to change up the film, it would've been cool to see Ben fight Tom as payback for how he abused Beverly. And I do wish we got to see James McAvoy do a recreation of saving Audra on the bike. It's such a beautiful scene in the book and miniseries. They reunited the bike's importance for the film.

@@rmcrae05 I decided to reread that part of the book again. I totally forgot that it said Tom's eyes bled due to what happened to his brain once staring at the Deadlights. But yeah, I can't find where it says that Tom was eaten. It's just that on two websites that I found, it talks about Tom being devoured. I guess it's supposed to be assumed that since Losers don't see his corpse when they arrive.

I just finished reading the book and WOW. There's no way any major film company could make a truly faithful adaptation of that beast. Apart from all the social commentary on white supremacy, anti-semitism, mysogyny, homophobia and the inherent violence to the History of America, it's just too difficult to translate into screen. There's so much exposition, so many inner monologues (Mike's interludes, that lead to the realization of It literally being Derry, are essential and close to impossible to adapt), so many flashbacks recounting the story of so many Derry's inhabitants...that would drive any AAA screenwriter crazier than any of Pennywise's illusions. When you're writing a movie, you need to focus. In a book you can get crazy. Aaaaaaaaand also the Losers's sex scene. Hard to blame them for skipping on that one.

Years ago, I started the book, but never finished it, it was a page turner though. Having said that, I grew up with the mini series and until my mid teens, it scared the tar out of me! So when I heard about the remake or theatrical version, I was intrigued to say the least. Chapter 1 even with being modernized, worked better than I expected: even the projector scene was a good substitute for the photo album scene in the TV movie in 1990 - almost every change has worked pretty well... so far. Chapter 2 looks epically phenomenal to me, but I'll still wait for home media for personal reasons. I'll probably bite the bullet per se, skip the renting and just buy it, if I know me.

Ok, the turtle has more importance. Old mythology that the Earth rides on the back of a turtle. Terry Pruitt uses that in his Discworld series. Has a whole long explanation where the inhabitants lower someone down and they see the great turtle. King also makes a reference in The Gunslinger series. (Fun game as you read that. The only bit I had a gripe with was ITs spiderform at the end. But after I thought well logically it'd be different from the book and 90s movie. Also pennywise is the main enemy form and a main character so it'd get rid of him. And looking back at it having him as a spider like clown was creepier than just a spider.
@smoothsavage2870
@smoothsavage2870 Жыл бұрын
Finished the book a couple weeks ago, then rewatched the 90s mini-series and the 2010s movies. Both of them were accurate at parts and inaccurate at others. Both left things out. Here's 10 things i can think of: 1) Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise is very comedic, while Bill Skaarskgard's portrayal of Pennywise is more weird and creepy. Tim's portrayal of Pennywise's personality is more accurate to the book. However, Bill's Pennywise is more accurate to how the clown looks in the book. 2) Patrick Hockstetter was not a main member of Henry's crew, but he did hang around him from time to time. The day that Patrick was murdered by Pennywise, he was masturbating Henry before Henry started to feel like it was wrong, then forced Patrick to stop and walked away. Beverly was hiding in a car trying not to be spotted by them. Patrick's death was the most deserved one in the book imo. 3) Ritchie was far more racially insensitive in the books than either the mini-series or the more recent movies portrayed 4) Henry had been secretly terrorizing Mike Hanlan's family, because of his father Butch Bowers' racism against Mike's father Will Hanlon. Henry poisoned and killed the Hanlon family dog. Henry reveals this to Mike just before Mike meets the rest of the Loser's Club for the first time. 5) The Loser's Club went into the sewers armed with nothing but matches for light in their encounter with It as adults. 6) Pennywise regularly used racial slurs against Mike Hanlon in the book 7) In both the mini-series and recent movies, the first encounters were either changed around or were entirely different. In the book Ben Hanscom first sees Pennywise in a clown suit and the mummy face in the canal during a dream while he's hiding in a tree trunk from Henry Bowers, Victor Crisp and Belch. Mike Hanlon first encounters Pennywise as a large bird. Bill and Ritchie first encounter Pennywise in Georgie's room in the picture album, but the first physical encounter was on Neibolt Street with Pennywise appearing as a werewolf. Eddie first encounters Pennywise on Neibolt street as a leper. Beverly's bathroom encounter is the most accurate in all the films. 8) Eddie's arm is broken during his fight with Henry in the hotel, but he manages to kill Henry with a half a bottle of champagne/wine by pushing it into Henry's chest. 9) Eddie dies in the book like in both 90s and 2010s movies, but he died from getting his arm eaten off while trying to use his asthma pump to spray down It's throat and trying to believe the pump into being battery acid 10) It was not only just a pregnant female, it had already laid hundreds of eggs in it's layer, which Ben had to try and destroy with little to no light.

I don't mind the changes, but I can never actually understand why the Turtle is leave out the adaptations. The turtle explains a lot from Kings mithos and turns It into a Cosmic Horror. I still don´t understand why many movies don´t want to mess with this kind of horror.

Because it is difficult to incorporate cosmic horror into visual media. It is best done through words as the imagination limitations create the horrors for one's self. Few movies also reveal a proper decent into madness as cosmic horrors reveal themselves. Sam Niel (Jurassic Park) acted in a couple of great horror movies. There is also that recent one where the lady who is playing female Thor was the main character, she a and a group of specialist travel into a growing field created by an unknown object from space (Lovecraft's The Colours from Space).

My only problem is if the losers all forgot about Pennywise (as they said they didn’t understand what they were feeling when Mike called, or why they needed to return to Derry) why did Stan? He knew he couldn’t face Pennywise again and took his own life but how could he know if he didn’t remember?
@bucky-olivia-barnes8937

Baybie Gurl Stan was always so much more terrified than the rest of the group of It. He almost didn’t make the pact at all. I think that’s what made him remember. He held onto that fear so much that he just couldn’t completely shake it. Just like Ben loved Bev so much that he couldn’t forget her even if he forgot what happened other than that he was in love with her.

Bucky Barnes yea true. Cause they all had gotten the fear so I guess it’s logical that Stan knew why he had it.

It isn't mentioned at all in the movie, but in the novel, Stan is implied to have some ESP type ability, like he senses or knows things that others don't. There are a couple of instances of him accurately predicting things throughout. All the other Losers believed It was male, but it's heavily implicated that Stan alone understood that It was female and pregnant, which causes him to feel the most hopeless about actually being able to defeat It.

IMO they really failed with the ending in Chapter 2. The clown head on the spider body was the most anti-climactic thing possible. They could have made the spider creature really scary, but failed. Even the movie The Thing in 1982 had scarier visuals...

Having the Losers keep their memories after killing Pennywise was a good change from the book. Pennywise made them forget everything in the first place. It never made sense why killing it and thus Its control on everything of Derry would make the Losers forget again. Although, Stephen King has referenced in other stories that Pennywise might actually still be alive, so maybe It made the Losers forget again so they can never come back to Derry because It fears they will succeed in killing It for real. Anyway, not only am I glad that they Losers won't forget about Stan and Eddie, I am mostly glad because this means Bill won't forget about Georgie again. In the book, Bill says that even though he mentioned to Audra, he only repeated a fact. He didn't acknowledge that he actually spoke of Georgie. So he actually never truly thought of his brother until after Mike called him to come back home. Bill hadn't thought of George since not long after he left Derry. Having Bill in the book forget Georgie all over again (permanently) is just heartbreaking.

He’s saying the movie was a bit long because it FELT long. When a movie is really good, it goes by quick. Titanic and Braveheart don’t feel long because they are freaking excellent. If a movie feels long, it’s not a very good movie and should probably be shorter. Also you can’t compare that to reading a book. You don’t read a massive book in one sitting, you do it over time at your own pace. In a movie theater you have to sit there from beginning to end.
